Just say no to March Madness?

I don’t watch NBA to begin with.

But for those who do, it might be a suitable end-of-Lent penance to turn away from it.

March Madness is college basketball.

My husband loves the tournament, but considering the timing will probably only watch “his team.” The schedule for the tournament is consistent year to year (to my knowledge).

Interestingly, one team (BYU) refuses to play Sundays, so if they make it in they are guaranteed Thursday and Saturday games. It would be good (IMO) if more schools followed suit to change the tournament schedule. Of course, they are students too.

Since when have secular sports leagues changed their schedules to accommodate Christian holy days? (Ok, aside from letting BYU rest on Sunday, which I didn’t know about till now. Bravo for them.)

In 2010, the Final Four was on Easter weekend. I missed seeing my “home team”, WVU, play in the semifinal because I was at the Easter Vigil. (WVU’s home arena is a 5-10 minute drive from my apartment.)

? Some families (ours did) came together as an event to watch games and the tournament. I see nothing wrong with spending some time on one of those days watching games–especially if it is a relaxing/enjoyable experience.

I can tell you that after Easter Sunday mass, and visits with both sides our family, I will be ready for some well earned down time to watch some basketball.

As long as everyone gets to mass I don’t necessarily see an issue for Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday. These are liturgically joyful days. Good Friday, on the other Hand, seems extremely inappropriate for games.
