Giver:
Yes I do. First pray to be baptized with the Holy Spirit, if you haven’t been already. Next I would suggest you give your life to Jesus. Then get into the Word and let the Holy Spirit teach you to live the Word. I believe in this way a person comes to know God, and when someone knows God they won’t sin.
Giver, with all do respect; your answer is incorrect. It sounds simple enough and if it worked that way, it would be great; but alas, it doesn’t. Many people study the Bible and believe that the Holy Spirit teaches them when in fact their own judgments and opinions cloud the true meaning of God’s Word. Simply knowing God will not stop a person from committing sin. For example, Lucifer knew God and chose to sin against Him. All humans sin regardless of their understanding of God. We are imperfect and blemished therefore, we sin. Do you “know God?” Do you sin? The poster recognizes that he/she has sin in his/her life. He/she is asking how to overcome that sin. That is a question that EVERY Christian on earth wishes to know the answer to. Until we can overcome sin, we have the sacrament of Confession. That doesn’t mean that we should use it as a crutch and give up on overcoming our sins, but it’s there for us when we need it. My suggestion to the poster is to take one sin at a time (starting with the most grievous) and every morning say a prayer to God in which you ask Him to give you the strength to make it through the day without committing that sin. Then, as you go through the day imagine Christ walking beside you keeping watch (because He does) over you. If you wouldn’t commit that sin, when Christ is standing beside you physically, then maybe knowing and remembering that He is standing there spiritually will help. As you go about the day, avoid temptation that might lead you toward that sin. At the end of the day and before bed, thank God for keeping His eye on you and giving you the strength to make it through without committing the sin. Also, ask others to pray for you. When I say others, I mean friends, Saints and Our Lady. With time, it should become easier to abstain from that sin and then it’s time to add the next serious sin and ask God for the strength to overcome that one as well. God knows that we will occasionally stumble, however He will forgive us if we are making an earnest attempt to avoid sin and when we do stumble, we go to Confession. Take part in Holy Communion as often as possible. As you do this, reflect on the sacrifice that Christ has made for you and ask Him to nourish you physically, mentally and spiritually so that you can further overcome the things that separate you from God. I do however, believe it is important that we read God’s Word, and so please don’t misunderstand what I am saying. However, I disagree with you as to your suggestion that knowing God will make a human being sinless.

Tietjen,

Your answer shows no respect for the Word of God, no respect for people of God. You say all people sin, well you don’t know all people, and John told us if you know God you don’t sin.

What you really don’t have respect for is the Holy Spirit. You don’t believe he is much of a teacher or guide.

Galatians 5:16
“Let me put it like this if you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence…”.

What John said is we all have sinned. He tells us that not all sin leads to death. After he explains all that once he didn’t have to keep on explaining. So when he says: (1 John 3:5-6) “Now you know that he appeared in order to abolish sin, and that in him there is no sin; anyone who lives in God does not sin, and anyone who sins has never seen him or known him.”

(2 Peter 2:20-22)”and anyone who has escaped the pollution of the world once by coming to know the Lord and savior Jesus Christ, and who then allows himself to be entangled by it a second time and mastered, will end up in a worse state than he began in.” (I wont have enough room to finish this, but you can find it in your Bible.)

(1 John 3: 3 - 9) “Surely everyone who entertains this hope must purify himself, must try to be as pure as Christ. Any one who sins at all breaks the law, because to sin is to break the law. Now you know that He appeared in order to abolish sin, and that in Him there is no sin; anyone who lives in God does not sin, and anyone who sins has never seen Him or known Him. My children do not let anyone lead you astray; to live a holy life is to be holy just as He is holy; to lead a sinful life is to belong to the Devil, since the Devil was a sinner from the beginning. It was to undo all that the Devil has done that the Son of God appeared. No one who has been begotten by God sins: because God’s seed remains inside him, he cannot sin when he has been begotten by God.”

I am going away for a few days, so be back in touch the 20th .

freesoulhope:
when i first came to know God, i have to confess that it was through fear of him, … , i stay in that relationship mostly because of my fear of him. I have heard that its good to fear god, as this helps one to stop sinning.
This fear is the first step back to God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 1:7).

freesoulhope:
if i stop sinning, i dont just want it to be because i fear eternal hell, i want it to be because i love God, I dont want to use him.
But it is still a legitimate first step. Use it as leverage to get to the next step, which is to do good in order to get a reward. But even that is not the final step of loving God… still, we must acknowledge our limitations and do what we can with what we have until God grants us more grace. Do you teach a baby to run? Do you teach calculus to a first grader? Can you suddenly make yourself able to do 100 pushups by merely willing it? Even so, be thankful for what you do have so that it can take root in you and grow.

freesoulhope:
… I think its because i love my sin more then i love God, i want to love god with all my heart, but i find it hard to connect. do you have any suggestions?
Perhaps you aren’t really believing that you will be punished. This can happen when we don’t trust our own thinking, which can happen if we often lie to ourselves. After all, the thought about being punished can be bogus just like the other bogus thoughts we let ourselves have, right? It is time to wise up, get serious with the issue of your salvation, and look inside yourself to see what you find there.

Do not discount any thought. Treat every bad thought as if it were a real attack, and make a mental prayer asking God for help to deal with each one as they occur. Persevere in doing this, even hundreds of times throughout each day. It may take awhile, perhaps even years, but if you entrust the request to God then He will eventually do something about it. In the meantime, every grain of sand that you pile up will eventually add up to a heavy sandbag anchoring you with hope. The more you give God a chance to show you what He can do for you, the more you are building up confidence in Him. But it takes time, time we give to Him.

So keep trying to do the right thing, and make sure you fight off your bad thoughts, which is where your bad actions come from in the first place.

I would like to find out some more info about the catholic chruch. My family is catholic and LDS. My mom (LDS) and dad (Catholic) are divorced and I only know (very little) about the LDS. I grew up with my mom and we never went to church. When I got older I started to go on my own, but I am not happy in the LDS church. I have a hard time with what they teach. My dad lives in CA and I really don’t have anyone to talk to about all my questions here in UT. I would like to go back to church, but I just don’t know how or where to start. If anyone could help that would be great.

Heya Steph,

Let me recommend the Catholic Home Study Service operated by Father Oscar Lukefahr. Get the book “We Believe - A Survey of the Catholic Faith”. It’s free. Also, let me recommend Scripture Catholic, New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, the Mary Foundation (free audio CDs) and the Church Fathers and also get a 2nd edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. You can get them from Amazon.com.

If you need any help with anything specific, feel free to PM me.

You can listen to Catholic radio on avemariaradio.net, releventradio.com, and ewtn.com. Also, RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) classes start next fall. There is no pressure for convert, but it just gives you the basic facts of the Church. If you go talk to a parish priest, he can probably point you to a good direction.

God bless & don’t feel too afraid to start new topics on stuff you get confused about.

Giver, I say this without anger or contempt, but rather out of love. You have never meant me; therefore, you have no idea who or what I respect. The fact is I have a great deal of respect for God’s Word and all three Persons of the Holy Trinity, to include the Holy Spirit. As for my not knowing “all people,” that is true. However, because I DO know God’s word, I know that ALL people sin (See Romans 3:20-26 paying special attention to verse 23). It might also be pointed out that St. Peter sinned on the eve of Christ’s crucifixion. He denied Christ 3 times and yet he knew that Christ was the Son of God prior to that because that too is in God’s Word (Matt 16:16). St. Paul wrote to many early churches and often advised them of sins they were committing. Why would he have to write to Christian Churches warning them to avoid sins if Christians weren’t capable of sinning? St. Paul called himself a sinner (I Timothy 1:15). Was he not a Christian?

That’s fine; however, I will not be continuing this discussion. I have stated the facts and see no more point in furthering a debate as to whether Christians sin. All human beings sin. That is why Christ empowered His Apostles with the authority to forgive sin. St. Peter sinned, St. Paul sinned, you sin, I sin, the Pope sins, the preacher behind the pulpit on Sunday sins. We ALL fall short of perfection. To deny this, is to elevate oneself to God and that is perhaps the greatest sin of all. God bless you Giver and peace.

I second all of the book suggestions here. On a personal note I would also say to check out The Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake. You can see by my location that I am just a few hours north of you. That cathedral is simply beautiful!

Before most Christians could read, all the stories of Scripture were done in pictures. The stained glass windows of The Cathedral of the Madeleine tell some amazing stories. (Both Bible and the Saints.) Take a notebook and just walk around and soak up the richness of history. If you see something you want to ask about just write it down. The Stations of the Cross there are incredibly well done. (They are 14 individual pictures on the wall that tell the story of the last hours of Christ’s life.) When I was there they were selling a book about the cathedral that shows what each section of each window means.

Living in Salt Lake and being a Catholic is an interesting struggle. I hope you find many locals who will support you in your search for Truth. The history of the Catholic Church is very strong in SLC. You just have to know where to look.

Remember to take someone with you since that part of town can be a little scary at times. (But its so near temple square!!) May God bless you in your search. And may you come to know the One, Triune Lord in your journey to Truth. Welcome to the forums!
