I’ve been going to mass since I’ve been a baby. But according to some of you I must be a bad catholic. I go to mass on saturday night.( until they take that mass away I will go) I sometimes wear jeans to mass.( the horror) and flip flops. I receive the eucharist(SP) on my hands. When people kneel I don’t. ( Bad knees) but you wouldn’t know that. But I go to church and during the week I try to be a good catholic. Just some thoughts.

diet coke,

You are doing fine.
  1. Some people on this board misunderstand piety for real faith. Not in all cases does greater shows of piety mean greater faith. If you can’t kneel, no problem. I personally like to see people dress up for Mass, but if you are truly living a life of grace, who am I to argue with jeans.
  2. In addition, some people on this board also think that if being a traditional Catholic is good, then the more traditional you are the better Catholic you are. Not so. Orthodoxy – meaning following the teachings of the Church – is the only way to go. If the Church teaches Saturday Mass and receiving in the hand is OK, then it’s OK, regardless of what some people on this board think. The Magisterium’s authority is the final word over those people’s opinions.

I agree with everyone above!

Keep on keepin’ on! 😉

(that’s an old hippy way of sayin’ - do what you’re doin! 👍 )

I hear you on the bad knees one. I had surgery on my knees last year, so I couldn’t kneel. Fortunately for me, since I showed up on a walker, people were just surprised that I was there at all, so no one said anything to me.

I have bad knees also, I just lean forward in a posture of prayer. If people have a problem with it, shame on them. They should be focused elsewhere!

isn’t there a verse in the gospel where Jesus condemns those who bind burdens to lay on other men’s shoulders? none of the things you describe goes against any Catholic doctrine or discipline, so where’s the beef?

You sound like you’re a good Catholic to me. Don’t let some of the people on here bully you into thinking you’re a bad Catholic if you wear jeans/flip flops to Saturday night mass. Just some thoughts.😉

Oh, you think showing up in jeans is bad, when i was recovering from surgery, i had these huge braces on my legs (as though I had just had polio) and I could only wear these really ugly sweat pants. Nothing else would fit over the braces.

Even now, I still sometimes wear jeans to Mass. I try not to, since I feel that, if I show up to work wearing nicer clothes than I do to Mass, my priorities are a little out of whack. But occasionally, I still wear jeans, though I try to keep them clean.

I never wear flip-flops to Mass, but then again, I never wear flip-flops period. So that has nothing to do with Mass.

It’s sad that we women are so picky about what other people wear, and that Meredith Vierra gets angry letters because she dared to wear white before Memorial Day. As another poster said, you’d think, during Mass, we’d be more interested in worshiping God than serving as the fashion police.

Today’s Gospel:
Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”
Lk 10:38-42
I think you may be like Mary in today’s Gospel.
But I go to church and during the week I try to be a good catholic. Just some thoughts.
Here’s a suggestion: go to Mass during the week, too. It will help you be a better Catholic. Wear your jeans, care for those bad knees, and silence your cell phone please 🙂

There is nothing wrong with the actions you are doing and I urge you to continue in your relationship with God.

It is important that we focus primarily on our personal relationship with Jesus, regardless of what society says.

Now there is nothing wrong with piety and please do not judge others who choose to pay attention to their actions in honoring God. This is nothing against you and most people who kneel for communion, recieve on the tongue, dress up for Mass, pray piously do it for God not for the attention of others. That means it is a good thing and it should be encouraged, we should not judge them or frown on piety.

We should always discourage the judging of others based upon looks and it goes both ways, to the ones who have no good clothes to wear to those who wear their Sunday best. We do not know the circumstances for why they wear what they wear and we should be very cautious of attributing ill will for either situation.
After I receive,(on the tongue) I go to my pew kneel and pray, I would have no idea if you received in your hand or tongue and I don’t care, both are allowed. Now if you publically adovated a grave sin such as abortion then we might have to talk.

If someone skips Mass and says its ok to go to the bar instead then we have a case for correcting our brother for failing to do good.

May God bless you,
Scylla

My husband and girls wear modest shorts (to the knees) to Mass in summer. Our church has no air conditioning, there is no real ventilation, and sometimes the day is just too hot for a dress, even a sundress!!! I wear pants because it makes me feel better. I seldom wear shorts, mostly because in my line of work, I can and do crawl around in tight spaces. Pants and trousers are what I wear. Lots of times, those pants are jeans.

My only concerns with flip-flops is on servers. I am afraid, in our parish with polished marble and terrazo floors, they will fall. So is Father, so they are not worn by servers. I really don’t look at people’s feet. The girls wear sandals that I picked up at Wal-Mart for $3 that are really just pretty flip-flops made of leather. I wear gym shoes a lot, because they have traction, and I am 50-ish. (Did you know flip-flops were invented during the Depression to give people an inexpensive pair of summer shoes?)

What bothers me is the belly shirts and very tight Hollister jeans worn with flip-flops. It is distracting to watch a girl’s rump be used as an advertisement during Mass, not in a sexual way (I am female after all) but the up/ down/twist/turn. I keep expecting blinking neon lights to be included in every pair of Hollisters.

I receive our Lord in my hands. I make sure my hands are clean first. I would prefer intinction, which I think is much more efficient, but I am not in change.

I kneel now, but kneeling isn’t getting any easier. My boss, who is principal of a Catholic elementary school, has a great deal of difficulty with kneeling, as she has been teaching for decades. On the weekend, she attends a local parish that has no kneelers so nobody says, “There’s the principal of St. Whozits, and she isn’t kneeling!”

So- Are you so different?

You and God know your heart. Don’t worry about what others might think. Other people never know the whole story. --KCT

I can’t go to mass during the week I have to be at work. And I don’t have a cell phone yes a person without a cell phone.

AMEN!!!

The only thing I would ever harp on is that people should dress MODESTLY for Mass. Our OP doesn’t sound immodest, so…

The knees I totally understand. Lots of people simply sit instead of kneeling due to that difficulty. Communion in hand is an acceptable practice, as is the Saturday Vigil.

The only thing I can’t underastand is the flip-flops. Is it really that hard to put on shoes and socks when you go to worship God? Afterall, he did die on the cross for us!

I am so sorry Aunt Martha. I am not trying to be mean. It just occured to me, a line I read in the book Angela’s Ashes. It’s on the thread, but a little off.

These kids in Limerick were poor, and there was some sort of fun being made of those who had to go barefoot. The school master shouted, “And was Jesus sporting shoes when He was dying for us on the cross?”

Well, my point was - is it really so hard in this day and age to simply put on a pair of shoes and socks when going to worship God? It probably takes 2 minutes of a person’s time - is that too much too ask from a person when going to Church? (obviously I am not referring to someone too poor to afford shoes - I don’t think that this is the circumstance of the OP in this thread).

It can be annoying to hear someone’s flip-flops going slap-slap-slap as the person walks up to Communion. Besides, flip-flops are beachwear, not churchwear, and I don’t understand why it is so hard for some people to understand that. I’m not saying people have to wear suit and tie, but a little bit of respect and courtesy for God when dressing is a small thing to ask when Jesus did so much for us. People will wear shoes and socks to work, but would never dream of wearing flip-flops to their job, unless they are a lifeguard or something of that nature.

Why is the workplace worthy of proper dress, but God is not?
