I work with a Mormon and we have religious discussions pretty often. I am a convert to the Catholic faith and he is a Catholic that converted to LDS. I came across this movie on YouTube and learned a lot that I had not known before. (It seems to have been put out by a protestant group.)

Lifting The Veil Of Polygamy

God bless.

Personally, I believe one needs to understand why something happens from a doctrinal point of view before one jumps on the bandwagon that “this religion is wrong because” this happened.

During Old Testament times, this happens and yet I hear little about folks’s issue with it.

So why attack your Mormon friend because of this misunderstood period of his church’s history?

So Old Testament prophets who practiced it were not Christian, is that what you are saying?

This validates my point — God allowed this to happen then – I guess it Catholicism does not say something is false or wrong, it is not.

probably because its still going on today in the fundamentalist circles. have you seen the video? the doctrinal point of view and the historic issues are covered. or are you just reacting? it really is an interesting video, wheather your mormon or not. Peace:)

Well, no, Old Testament prophets weren’t Christian.

But, anyway, what OT prophets were polygamists? The prophets I know of (though, I’m not well versed with the prophets, admitedly) were not even married.

hi adstrinity, to be fair, its a possibility that moses was. either that or he was divorced and remarried. i cant quite make out by the text, which one it was. but he did have his first wife, who he sent back to her father, then married another. if im not mistaken, moses was also considered a prophet. however he is the only one im aware of that was possibly a polygamist. anyone can feel free to correct me on this. im not quite sure.God bless you and yours. 🙂

Who are the OT prophets that was practicing this

Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon are prime examples who practiced this.

From my thinking, God never condoned this yet never stopped it.

Yes, people have free will to sin. People err, quite often. The circumstances where Abraham did not trust in God, and chose to try a self-fulfilling style of prophecy, is a good example.

Jesus, however, clearly taught marriage is as it was designed from the beginning: one man, one woman.

Help me here what does this have to do with Joe Smith

From my conversations with my Mormon friends, the world outside of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will never understand the purpose for this in the early days of the church. The church does not practice now — anyone now would be excommunicated.

With that being said, this audience will continue to misunderstand this issue. Yes marriage with one man and woman is doctrine for Mormons, not practicing this.

ttnacath/thecourt,

So God did not give a revelation on polygamy in OT times, but he did in the latter days?

What was the “purpose” of polygamy in the early LDS chruch? Some Mormons on other forums I have participated in have said that polygamy was/is part of a “higher” law, and that the people just were not ready for it, which is why it was inactivated. Is this correct?

Since when were the Old Testament prophets before Christ not Christian.

So the Old Testament prophets were supposed to be chaste, no children no spouse just as the Catholic priesthood?

Who said the OP was attacking his friend? Unless you are willing to concede that his friend is attacking the Catholic Church.

Please don’t read something into this that does not appear to be there at all.

thecourt(do not know who that is) anyway when Wilford Woodruff revealed a revelation from the Lord that this was not to be practiced anymore. Now I suppose those here who dismiss the Mormon church for a host of reasons are not going to accept that as the reason.

This is according to my Mormon friends.

I thought of Moses, but, then I thought, ‘no, Moses was the Law, not a prophet.’

I wouldn’t consider them prophets.

OT people were not Christian because, strictly speaking, they didn’t follow the Christ, who hadn’t yet come before.

I never said they were supposed to be, only that I couldn’t remember any who were specifically married, let alone to multiple wives.

As far as I am concerned, when anyone finds a website, pamphlet, etc regarding some issue with Mormon history, it certainly is not endorsed by the church officially.

According to my Mormon friends, anything outside of the church unless it is made by a church member is not likely to be friendly toward the church.

No one before Christ, obviously, was Christian. That would be impossible. They were Jews. Yes I would imagine that the Old Testament prophets were suppose to be chaste, just as we all are suppose to be chaste. Chastity, however, does not mean celibacy. I’m sure they were not required to be celibate. Catholic priests were not always required to be celibate. It is a discipline of the Church, not a doctrine. A discipline can and does change. Peter, our first Pope, was married, as were many other priests and bishops in the early centuries.
