I have been ill for 5 years and went to confession, my husband drives me, I seldom go anyway but the doctors much more. We had a new priest, and no one there but me,
and he was quite young, he was in such a rush, I could barely speak. He was not interested in anything but mortal sin I guess. I have been married for 25 years and husband doesn’t go to church or confession, I can’t receive the host as we got married by judge. He reminded me I"m not married.

but I won’t go back to him for confession. there was one person there when I left. every time I go there are just a few peopole there, does anyone go to confession anymore or is it on its way out?

When there is a good priest, the line-ups are actually quite long - people are going to the good priests.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience.

In my home church there is always confession before and during Mass, and there are always lines. The tragedy with the short and inconveniently timed confession times is that people believe that the Communion heals every sin.

Is there any reason why you do not get your marriage validated in the Catholic Church? This should be number one on your list. Then you will be able to receive the Sacraments and go to the Eucharist regularly.

With the amount of folks receiving Holy Communion, there seems to be more saints in church than sinners. There are times when 7 or 8 people are waiting to go to confession, but at times, no one. And we have really great priests. 🙂

Yes, God does forgive venial sins, but we must go to a priest to receive absolution for mortal sins. Your sin is continous, in that you stay in an unblessed marriage. Perhaps that is why is was so short with you. (But he should not have been, maybe because he is young.)

Please get your marriage blessed so you can receive the sacraments. In the eyes of the church, you are not married. Call and talk with the pastor of your church. 👍

I do dislike how how priests stress so much how important to confess it is, but then only offer an hour of confession of time a week. There have been so many times that I have waited a full hour for confession only not to make it in.

Is there a traditional chapel (FSSP, etc.) anywhere near you? They usually have extended confession times and will also hear your confession any other time they are free.

If there’s no one going to confession, the problem is with us, not with the sacrament.

I do attend a FSSP church on Sundays, but the lines before mass are massive! I recently found out though that the priest comes out after mass and finishes hearing confessions. I still think they could be more generous with the time offered before mass as the turnout is always so large.

And I also know you can always schedule a confession, but I prefer anonymity. There is a priest I know that I think would make an excellent confessor, but I am a bit embarrassed about confessing to him as I see him so often. I know I should get over this, but its not easy.

But, its still a shame that many parishes only offer one hour of confession time a week. Saint Josemaria Escriva urged priests to sit in the confessional at least three hours a day.

You will probably find that the FSSP priest hears confessions on weekdays, as well. My parish FSSP priests hear them seven days a week.

The one at the parish I went to did too, but the Sunday morning line was always long, and he was usually late, so I just went on Saturday night when it was less busy. It’s much more peaceful, and it doesn’t feel like everyone is staring at you as they walk into the church.

I had a hard time finding someone who wasn’t an FSSP priest willing to hear to hear my 10 year confession. Finally, I tracked down an FSSP house in a larger city, and went to thei scheduled confession time. In the end I was happy I had such a struggle finding someone because that FSSP priest I went to was very patient, very attentive, and gave good counsel.

Well it’s important to regularly go to confessions to have your sins forgiven by God through the priest.

Well here they have a confession from 4-5 pm and mass at 5pm on Sat. so doesn’t leave much time.
Well I see his point. the older priest said my husband and I would need to go to confession and he’d bless us. He knew more about our situation tho, and I guess this priest doesn’t.

thank you all. God Bless.

Confession is not “on its way out” because it’s a Sacrament and the ordinary way to be forgiven of mortal sin, and it will always be necessary for Catholics… even if only a few people go. It’s sad that so few go, but that doesn’t make it any less necessary. 😦

Is there any way you could get your marriage convalidated by a Catholic priest? that is possible even if you were married by a judge… could you talk to a priest?

sorry to hear your confession wasn’t the most positive experience… it’s rare that I find a priest who rushes  most priests I’ve gone to confession to, are very patient. Is there another priest you could go to Confession to? But if there isn’t, I would still encourage you to go to Confession, and also speak to a priest about convalidating your marriage 🙂 regardless of what the priest is like, - and whether he’s a great confessor or not, it’s still Jesus who absolves you from sin in this Sacrament and - try to not think so much about the priest, - you are actually speaking to Jesus in Confession, who is hidden in the priest. The priest is acting “in the person of Christ”.

God bless

I don’t think confession is “on its way out” at all. Our church only has confessions on Saturdays from 4:15 to 4:45, usually with 2 priests hearing them, but there are always lines. I wish our church offered more time. I go on average, about once a month or every 6 weeks. Or when I feel the need if it’s sooner. I love that the more I go, the easier I find it to resist the temptation to repeat my sins. God’s grace!

Here in Calgary, our FSSP priest hears Confessions before and after every Mass that he says, in an anonymous confessional. He comes a half hour before Mass is to begin, and then comes back after Mass until everyone is done. 🙂
