Use Church teaching. From the Catechism:Talking with someone today and the topic of teaching right/wrong to teens came up.
When talking with youth, how do you explain that the use of marijuana is wrong?
We have (in many states) medicinal marijuana. That’s fine. We’re not arguing the validity of that. What is a problem is explaining why recreational use of marijuana is wrong.
When did people first smoke? I mean, really… I’ve never seen them smoking in any of the biblical movies… and there has been smoking since the United States was just colonies… where in the middle did the use of smoking begin?
We have priests and bishops who do smoke cigarettes… so how do we say ‘smoking is wrong’ when you have a cleric who does the same?
But what about the use of something like marijuana… which is illegal? Ok, we have that it’s illegal… and that should be enough… but WHY is it illegal (remember: we’re trying to explain to teens)
Would that tie into the commandments that speak of ‘Killing’? The use of marijuana can be read as hurting oneself, so that could tie in, right?
But how can we, as adults in the church, teach the ills of marijuana from a historical or biblical perspective.
Based on this marijuana use is wrong (immoral) because it is against a legitimate law, a law meant to protect the common good.

Marijuana has been proven to cause pychotic problems.
I had a friend who smoked marijuana. He was a lovely person, but he changed a lot. He became paranoid and dead when sobre. His whole personality just went downhilll when he started smoking it, until he committed suicide

Unfortunately I also tried marijuana once and had a panic attack. This was five years ago and I am still not completely over it. I am grateful I had that panic attack to stop me having anymore.
People get addicted to the effects. Someone at my old college used to smoke marijuana a lot and something in his brain has been damaged. He now slurrs when he speaks.
Not to mention that it is only the beginning and people move on to stronger drugs.
People who say that marijuana is safe, clearly have no idea about the mental effects of it.

Thats fine, you might be on of those people who can smoke up and have no adverse effect-for now. How do you know what will happen to you in the future? How do you know you won’t hook up with a friend? Or do something else stupid and immoral?
Your talking to someone who has used drugs before-many times. I’ve done incredible stupid things while high.
Been sober now for a year and ten months on the 15th.
Believe it or not, if you want to smoke up in the privacy of your own home-fine. Your choice. I’m agnostic on if it should be legalized. However, there are adverse effects and it should not be looked upon as “harmless fun”.

Congrats, that’s an accomplishment you should be proud of.
But for me, no intoxicating substance has ever been a problem, medically, socially or professionally. And I’m going to guess I have a few years on you.

Because it impairs your judgment, and negates your inhibitions to the point where you are no longer fully in control of your actions. So then, if you are not controlling them (actions), who is? (only applicable to a “Believer” teen, obviously)

Only if addressed to a teen who is a Christian. Another way to approach the subject is to ask the question, “If Jesus were here now, would He do this?”

Eph. 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit (of God).” (KJV et al). The Douay-Rheims uses the word, “luxury”, instead of “excess”; to my way of thinking it sends the wrong message, but that is for a different thread to debate.

Many more have done incedibly stupid things straight as well. just look at the extreme sports scene.
I have put my life at risk without any drugs in my system just because i wanted to do it.
Congrats on your staying sobre. Call me a hypocrit i smoke but i sure wouldn’t support any one to take up smoke.

One drink drink doesn’t create significant impairment. Two drinks usually doesn’t create significant impairment.
Marijuana hasn’t been shown to have the life-extending benefits of alcohol, but it also doesn’t have the same potential to impair people.

A very dear friend is a high school chemistry/science teacher,
She has a drug lecture that she does for her students. By the time she’s done, her students are afraid to drink water… LOL! (I’m sure it doesn’t keep them ALL off drugs… but those “thinking” about it… they tend to stay on the right side of the fence.)
I think drug talks need to be just like sex talks… All about self respect… And when adding religion… God wants us to care for our bodies. Part of that is to stay away from things that simply destroy.

And that’s the problem. The movie that started off as a morality play morphed into* Reefer Madness*, a perfect example of how overstating a problem works against you when, as kids will do, they do take a hit and don’t turn into raging monsters looking for the needle. They’re going to be harder to reach next time you lecture them on the problems of drugs like cocaine or crack or meth.

She does an excellent breakdown of how brain chemistry works, cellular changes and such throughout the body… and how it is effected when you ingest anything. ANYTHING… how some things give instant horrifying results. Others no obvious change… or you don’t even “notice” the changes… until it’s too late… It’s a good lecture. Even the kids will tell you so. The lecture is drug focused, but covers things like sugar and such…

If you expect to scare a kid of drugs by pointing out that ANYTHING causes chemical changes throughout the body, that’s a guaranteed fail, The kid, right around the time he’s no longer afraid to drink water, takes a hit off a reefer and when he notices that he doesn’t start looking for the heroin needle is going to think lectures about use of narcotics that really can destroy a person are either overstated hysteria or outright lies.
If I have a scotch I want and expect there to be changes in brain chemistry. That’s the point of having one.
