Just *why* is marijuana use wrong?

When talking with youth, how do you explain that the use of marijuana is wrong?

Because it makes you stupid.

No, I’m not saying that to be funny.

It has long term effects (affect?) on congnitive ability and mental agility - the ability to think quickly and to grasp and hold onto complex thoughts for extended periods of time.

“It makes you stupid” is enough… for those who want/need more, you can expound.

Just like my mother told me, ‘sex is great when you are married, but the ONLY way you can get pregnant is if you have sex’. Neat. Succinct. Made LOTS of sense to me. There was no argument. Couldn’t say, ‘my mother told me that and it turns out it wasn’t true’. Those are the facts. She never made it seem dirty or bad or something undesirable.

Saying judgemental things such as ‘weed makes you stupid’, does far more harm than good. Not only is it fairly judgemental, but it’s also debatable. Not only have several historically great people smoked the stuff and turned out fine, I know a few stoners who’ve made something of themselves. Granted, some are incredibly stupid, but others have shown to be successful. And that can be said of any group really.

And when you tell them things about marijuana that are untrue, or partially untrue, then that casts everything else you say into doubt. That is actually the great poison of a lot of anti-drug campaigns. They exaggerate/tell half truths about the negative effects of relatively harmless drugs (such as marijuana). As soon as kids find out the people they’re supposed to trust have lied to them, it casts into doubt the actual truths they say (such as the very real negativity of things like cocaine, heroin, etc.).

I believe one of the most important things to do when teaching kids anti-drug stuff is be as truthful as possible, and as least judgemental as possible.

Anyways, the government thinks lots of things about pot, that are usually not true, but thats the gov. for you.

As for marijuana being a gateway drug, no alcohol would be.

I feel the sin is all the people who pass judgment on me for smoking weed. I don’t drink nor so I smoke tabaco.

The way I see it, all the people that are anti marijuana, and look down on me because I smoke A little weed, but smoke tabaco or drink alcohol, I’ll be looking down on them from heaven because there the ones who sinned by judging me. I don’t claim to be holyer than anyone else. But I don’t go gossiping about others and passing judgment on anyone. The only one who I have to worry about judging me is Jesus my lord and saveyer. I have a spiritual relationship with Jesus. God gave his people all seeded plants for us to use. Just because the government says marijuana is bad, doesnt make it a sin.

What we need to teach are children, is to not just agree with laws of the land, but to question them. We need to teach gods law as written in the bible, and if the bible does not say it’s a sin to smoke marijuana, than it’s not a sin. Many cultures use medications like marijuana in spiritual gatherings. I have studied religion in many forms and personally I feel that when using things like marijuana, mushrooms, peyote, and other mind altering substances during warship, I am on another level, tah allows me to free my mind and become on a subconscious level that allows me to warship and communicate with my higher power on more of a spiritual level.

Not all people may agree with me, but I don’t look down on them because they don’t see eye to eye with me, sone drink wine to feel closer to god. Well I consume a natural substance that was placed on this earth to put me into a more sperital level that allows me to pray and warship on a level I just don’t seam to get at on my own.

If the Laws of man do not violate the Laws of God then we are bond to uphold them. So if you do violate a just law it is not unjust, it is a sin. If you disagree with that law then you work to change it, but to violate it wronge.

Please don’t compare smoking weed or tripping to communion wine. The amount of wine given to a person at communion is nowhere near enough to affect their minds. People aren’t getting drunk at communion. Whereas you’re smoking weed to get high.

I have nothing morally against marijuana, and I’m all for its legalization, but it’s a recreational drug. If you want to believe that it’s spiritual, that’s all you. I can’t judge your relationship with God. You should know however, that nowhere in the Bible is it said to use mind altering substances to get closer to Him.

Your article mostly refers to drug dependance. Not all pot smokers are dependent addicts, just the same as not everybody who drinks is an alcoholic. One can be a responsible smoker just as one can be a responsible drinker.

This claim needs some specifics as to what controls are being placed on the test to ensure a good set of data from which to make this determination that one joint is equal in tar content to one “tobacco cigarette”:

Are we talking about a joint that is equal in every way to a tobacco cigarette in terms of kind, size and weight of paper, length and thickness of the cigarettes, the presence or absence of a filter, and the weight of the contents?

What is the potency of the marijuana being used in the test?

What methodology was used to determine the tar content of the cigarettes?

What was ignored in the data set and what was considered?

What is the definition of tar? Is it biased in any way with respect to one agent over another?

Finally, does the claim take into account that a joint is not smoked the same way a tobacco cigarette is smoked? There are two things to consider here: Firstly, a joint is usually passed around a small (or large) group of people while a tobacco cigarette is usually smoked by one person, resulting in far less smoke being consumed by one person from a single cigarette? Secondly, once the desired effect is obtained from the weed, one stops but the same is not true for tobacco as it has no discernible effect to one accustomed to the smoker, so one would smoke less marijuana than tobacco overall, assuming one smoked both.

There are lots of ways to conduct an experiment. The question is, are you trying to find out the facts or prove a hypothesis?

It seems to be a matter of prudential judgment as to whether or not smoking weed is wrong in any given circumstance. Likewise it could be a matter of prudential judgement as to whether a particular law forbidding its use is unjust.
