Just *why* is marijuana use wrong?

Intentionally altering your faculties beyond a rational control is committing a sin against the human body that God has given you. In the context of recreation, the purpose of marijuana is to do just that. There is no moderation in this particular scenario.
While this is usually the case… anything can be done in moderation or excess.

Recreational use of marijuana can hardly be done in moderation when everyone knows the sole purpose is to “get stoned”.

High does not=drunk.
When high one is completely able to make rational decisions which a drunk is incapable of doing.

You do realize, don’t you, that there are levels of being “stoned” or “high” (they’re different).

Depending on the strain, a person can take one puff and find that it relaxes them sufficiently to function or to slow down one’s mind enough to work through their cognitive therapy techniques to battle depression.

An added bonus is that while people tend to black out when drunk and don’t remember anything once they sober up, I’ve never heard of that happening with weed…

I agree that it normally is not done in moderation… that doesn’t mean that it can’t happen. I’m not advocating the use of it in any capacity I’m simply pointing out that unlikely as it may be… it’s possible.

Personal experience? Please provide the evidence supporting this. Marijuana is known and used primarily because of the effects it has on the brain most of which are negative in the grand scheme of things but users ignore this FACT for the sake of their high. Do you even know how the drug itself works and what it does to your brain?

Edit…
An added bonus is that while people tend to black out when drunk and don’t remember anything once they sober up, I’ve never heard of that happening with weed…
The lesser of two evils is not considered good and whether or not weed is lesser when compared to alcohol is highly debatable.

My comment was directly related to recreational use of marijuana. I haven’t been to too many parties where I saw folks smoking pot in moderation. I suppose it could happen, though.**

Personal experience, goes along way in understanding what it means to be high and why.
I would much rather have a drunk shooting at me versus one who is stoned beyond high.

That simply proves my point. Again the lesser of two evils is still an evil. I agree I’d rather have a drunk shooting at me… but either is a bad scenario.

Also, I’m sorry but your personal experience does not constitute proof of anything. Bottom line, it has an effect on your thinking. Shown here…
Are you suggesting after 1/2 a joint a person turns into a pile of mush? Are you suggesting a person can’t control how much they smoke or can’t turn it down if they are offered?
This proves my other point. Had you read more thoroughly you’d have realized that I was agreeing with you by saying that yes it is possible to be done in moderation. So again… marijuana impairs your ability to think clearly… or at least comprehend what you’re reading.

What have you written oh yeah it is unlikely to be smoked in moderation and the wording used conveys a message that you feel that it is a rare case if done in moderation.

Please my comperhension is just fine there bud.😃

Drinking wine, however, can be done in moderation. It is possible to enjoy wine without compromising your faculties beyond a rational control. Therefore, wine (as an example) can be enjoyed without committing sin.

I seriously doubt the medicinal marijuana argument, but will allow for it for the sake of this discussion. In short, using substances for medicinal purposes is certainly okay, provided that they are properly supervised and governed. My general impression, however, is that medicinal marijuana is a ruse for those who seek recreational pleasure from it.
This idea is a common fallacy associated with marijuana. Simply taking enough marijuana to become what is informally called “high” does not completely or IMO even significantly deprive a person the use of their reason. Being high isn’t the equivalent of being drunk where in that case a person wouldn’t have control or have their control severely diminish. Now if a person takes in a significant quantity of THC, really quickly,(e.g. hash or a lot of a very potent strain) their reasoning skills may diminish. However, I’ve witnessed plenty of people who use marijuana recreationally in moderation and their attitude isn’t much different than a person who is sober.

You shouldn’t drive while impaired on anything, that is NOT an argument for making such thing illegal, or such a thing being “wrong.” You shouldn’t drive after taking a bunch of T3’s either. You also shouldn’t drive if you are very tired, is being tired wrong, should it be illigal to be tired? Such logic is both poor and hillarious.

Is this entire thread just a bunch of people who have never smoked weed, or been around maryjuana culture? In some countries it is perfectly legal. While in amsterdam I found that responsible maryjuana use was the norm. Almost everyone smokes, but not everyday.

You can also dilute your maryjuana down (as I do and a large portion of the smokers in the world do) with a % tobacco, this leaves you with basically no effects atall. It is done for the taste, the social aspect, because people enjoy it etc… A spliff to a joint is like a beer to a cup of striaght vodka.

Also if anyone here has a problem with “maryjuana” which what you all really mean is thc and it’s effects, you should certainly have a problem with caffeine. A strong shot of expresso to a non caffeine drinker produces effects much like the use of maryjuana to a non smoker. Infact when I took a double shot of some notoriously strong expresso a few years back I responsibly had to ask my buddy to drive because home I was definetly high, and my heart was pounding. I didn’t much like the effects of lots of caffeine on my body hence why I drink light coffee. I also wasn’t to fond of getting very high when I smoke, so I dilute my mixture just like someone does with their tea of coffee of choice.

Arguments against an individuals right to smoke maryjuana are completely bunk, they are bankrupt.

The level of ignorance in this thread is absolutely astonishing.

I’m one of those people, I enjoy one or 2 spliffs when I have people over to my home for drinks. I don’t like being drunk or “high” so I like to just sip a beer and smoke a spliff, I don’t feel a thing and continue to have great conversation with enlightened intellectual individuals all night.

Anyone I’ve ever known to smoke (which has been more people than I’ve known who haven’t) have not done so in moderation so for the people that I’ve known… it’s not likely. Your experience as you’ve already stated may be different, my point is that it doesn’t constitute the norm and that it doesn’t make it ok. Again… I never said it’s not possible to be done. You blatantly overlooked that when you asked…
Are you suggesting after 1/2 a joint a person turns into a pile of mush? Are you suggesting a person can’t control how much they smoke or can’t turn it down if they are offered?
I never suggested either of the above and you’re attempting to put words into my mouth, don’t. You perceived the above because you wanted to. I’m perfectly aware that a person can control how much they smoke and can say no if they so choose in fact, I have to constantly say no on family vactions. I also know that it’s perfectly possible for someone to smoke half a joint and not be a pile of mush… but that’s largely dependant on the individual, every drug effects every person differently.

Ultimately, while it’s still illegal (unless you live in Amsterdam) it’s a sin. It doesn’t matter how you try to justify it, it’s a sin. Now… do I think it should be legal… for the most part, yes… but until that happens… it’s a sin.

I don’t feel a thing and continue to have great conversation with enlightened intellectual individuals all night.
Really? Interesting point given your username… if you don’t feel anything… why do you do it? Did you even think before you typed that?

If it didn’t have some effect and if you didn’t feel anything it’d be pointless.

Even if it is illegal, it is possible to procure marijuana from sources from which one is certain that no harm has come to any individuals through drug cartels and the like. One can grow or purchase organically grown marijuana with no additives and no history of coming from questionable sources.

The illegality issue is a somewhat minor one, as being “caught” with less than an ounce of marijuana results in a simple fine in most states in the U.S. It is a misdemeanor that is no more serious legally speaking than a large speeding ticket (and unlike with speeding, no-one’s life is put in danger with marijuana use).

Marijuana can be vaporized and the harmful effects of smoke virtually nullified as well.

Also, to say that marijuana makes you stupid is a ridiculous generalization. Just because a lot of stupid people use marijuana, does not mean marijuana makes one stupid. Go to any college campus and a LARGE percentage of the professors there use marijuana, not to excess, but on a fairly regular basis, and their IQs tend to range in the 140-160s.

Any “sin” (if you want to call it that) from responsible, moderate marijuana use under the above criteria would be venial at best, and that only for breaking a minor law, which, if we are honest with ourselves, most of us do nearly every day by failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign or exceeding the speed limit, which can actually put the lives of others in danger.

I’m not an expert on this but what you’re doing here is what’s known in corrections as robin hooding… basically you’re saying that since (while it’s considered wrong) you’re not (that you’re aware of) hurting anyone or doing anything else morally wrong… it’s ok when in reality you can’t deny the fact that it’s not. You can only attempt to justify it which makes it worse. As far as the idea that marijuana makes you stupid, yes it’s a generalization but you can’t deny the fact that it slows thinking, maybe in varying degrees depending on the user but it’s still a fact that it has that effect and as an intelligent person talking to someone while their sober then trying to talk to them while they’re high, trust me… you notice a difference.

Please don’t misunderstand, it’s not my intent to judge anyone here even if it comes across that way. I’m judging the act and whether or not it’s wrong from a moral perspective which is what the question of the thread is. I’m a sinner… I’m ashamed when I think of the list of sins I could poor out right here… but I don’t try to justify them. I just pray for God’s mercy and understanding.
