There have been lots of post on here about attending weddings of Catholics who marry prostestants without proper consent. Alot say that they would not attend, as this would be “supporting” the marriage. So I was wondering, if a family member married in this way, and then years later or a few days down the road or whatever, say they were coming in for a holiday event or etc. and needed a place to stay, would they be allowed to stay in your home? Share a bedroom and etc? I just really got to wondering about this and what would be the proper way to handle that.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Well, my BIL married (after a civil divorce, but no annulment–his first marriage was in the Catholic church) in a nondenominational church, and my MIL has made it clear that she will not welcome his wife in her home. She always says “wife” with audible quote marks.

He is still married in the eyes of the Church, to his first wife. We all acknowledge that the marriage had broken down, but the Church has not decreed that it was an invalid marriage, so no annulment has been granted. He just went ahead and got married outside the church.

My DH has said that no, we would not invite him and his wife to share a bedroom in our home. And I agree. They are committing adultery (they were both married in the Catholic church to their first spouses, but neither has an annulment). Treating them as man and wife is spitting in the face of the Church.

If it was my brother or sister, I would not put a stumbling block in the road for them. I would pray that they would see the kindness and love of Christ in my hospitality and return to his loving arms.

I once was lost, but now am found.

Thanks to both of you for your answers as they are both good and useful information.

Bcuster…I especially like what you have to say though. I think the old saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. I think I would defintely respond (if I were a nonchristian) to this approach, as I would see the love of Christ illuminating through you. I try to live my life as if I were holding a mirror, I would want to see Christ first in it. There are so many stories in bible of Christ’s love and his merciful grace that he approached sinner with. That is what I want to do. I love what you wrote, I was lost but now I am found!!! Whew good stuff. For we have ALL sinned and come short of the glorly of the God. There is not but one person that I know that was perfect, the rest of us, well we are saved by grace.

God Bless You Both for your answers!
