(CNN) – A Saudi Arabian human rights attorney is asking the government to allow him to represent a woman who was gang-raped – and then sentenced to prison for speaking out about the case.

—snip----
The woman – who was initially sentenced in October 2006 to 90 lashes – had her sentenced increased to 200 lashes and was ordered to serve six months in prison under Saudi Arabia’s strict Islamic law.

famdigy,

Being Muslim I am surprised you posted this. Would you care to offer your thoughts on the story and how it compares/contrasts with your understanding of Islam?

Thanks.

this is an outrage! We must pray for this girl and her country, more for the girl…

I don’t understand the courts thinking on the ruling other than they are trying to make an example of this poor girl. I hope our government would intervene and force their government, through political means, to commute the sentience.

does anyone know if they ever give “token lashes”? Lashes that are not inflicted with any force?

Things like this happen in Muslim countries a lot (Pakistan and Nigeria come to mind). What can the West do?

There are also Catholics in those “heathen lands”. Give me a break.
Lets just ask a Pope to clear this up:

"From the confines of Jerusalem and the city of Constantinople a horrible tale has gone forth and very frequently has been brought to our ears, namely, that a race from the kingdom of the Persians, an accursed race, a race utterly alienated from God, a generation forsooth which has not directed its heart and has not entrusted its spirit to God,* has invaded the lands of those Christians** and has depopulated them by the sword, pillage and fire; it has led away a part of the captives into its own country, and a part it has destroyed by cruel tortures; it has either entirely destroyed the churches of God or appropriated them for the rites of its own religion."*

The heathen oppressed and currently oppresses the Catholics who live in those lands

“Aye”? Really?

Is that why Pope John Paul II apologized for the crusader attack on Constantinople?

We are not in the 14th century, but the Muslims are.
Paul
That’s too general a comment. Yes, some Muslims (the extremist/terrorists that we always hear about on the news) are stuck in the 14th century. But most of them are not.

The “4th Crusade” was already excommunicated by His Holiness Pope Innocent III when it attacked Constantinople.

The so-called “4th Crusade” has nothing to do with the more holy ones.

Sounds to me like he supported an attack on Constantinople.

Not at all. Blessed Pope Urban II declared the crusades after being asked to by the Byzantine Emperor! The Byzantines wanted the crusades!

Constantinople gained much of its territory back in the Crusades. The Fourth Crusade was a crusade gone wrong. Shortly before, there had been a dispute between the Byzantine emperor and Venetian merchants in Constantinople, which resulted in a massacre of perhaps 10,000 Venetians by the Byzantines. In the course of it, a Venetian named Enrico Dandolo was deliberately blinded by the Byzantines, but made his way back to Italy.

Later, a usurper seized the throne of Constantinople from the emperor, Isaac Angelus, and blinded Isaac. Isaac’s son, Alexius, went to the West, where a movement was underway to undertake a new crusade to the Holy Land. Aleiux’ purpose was to enlist help to put his father back on the throne. Interestingly, Enrico Dandolo had, by that time, become the ruler of Venice. A deal was struck among the crusaders, largely Franks, Dandolo and Alexius. The crusaders did not have the money to pay Venice for transport to the holy land. There is some question that Dandolo hiked the price as a bargaining chip. So, Dandolo agreed to provide transport on credit if the crusaders would recapture a city that had been seized from Venice by Hungary. Alexius agreed to repay Venice if the crusaders would retake Constantinople and put Isaac back on the throne. He also agreed to resupply the crusaders at Constantinople, pay a cash sum for further support, reunite the Catholic and Orthodox churches and provide 10,000 Byzantine soldiers to aid in the crusade in the Holy Land, At that point, the Pope, hearing of the deal, protested and issued an excommunication against all crusaders who attacked any Christian city.

Ignoring the Pope, the crusaders accepted the deal and were transported to the city Venice wanted back, and took it. Venice then transported the crusaders to Constantinople, where they reinstated Isaac Angelus and his son, Alexius. However, when the Byzantines learned of the agreement Alexius had made, they refused to comply with it, leaving around 7,000 armed, angry, but massively outnumbered Franks to starve outside the city. The Byzantines fatally underestimated the fighting ability of the Franks and the craftiness of Enrico Dandolo, whose fleet also attacked by sea. The Franks and Dandolo’s Venetians conquered the City and looted it. In the course of the conquest and looting, around 2,000 Byzantines died. The Fourth Crusade never made it to the Holy Land; their original objective. It was a truly tragic event.
But far from being sanctioned by the Pope, it was condemned by him.
