Justification of sins

I was reading once again a post by a guy on facebook, on a Catholic page. It really intrigued me, but kind of angered me too.

Basically, he said masterbation and contraception can be sins based on how they are approached and used. Specifically he said masterbation may be good for a marriage and individual. I thought, “oh boy, cafeteria moral relativist Catholic”. But then.

He said, that life is not a cafeteria (to dismiss any claim he might be a cafeteria catholic) but it is full of complex choices that don’t always have outcomes that are sinful. He also said that this is not cafeteria this is the life created by God so that we may learn how to relate with Him and all His other creatures.

I am just totally confused. Is he seriously advocating this type of thinking, and yet trying to claim he is being a faithful Catholic?

My question is…

Do cafeteria Catholics (for want of a better term) always have some kind of argument for justification for sin? In your experience, or in general? I am having a hard time trying to love these people, trying to understand them. I just… it angers me that they say the creed in Church, probably go for communion and yet say things like "sins can or can’t be sins it depends’’.

When I quote scripture, these people always resort to the Shakespearean line “even the devil knows scripture”. Catholics who disagree with me are saying that I am the one using scripture for evil! It baffles me!

It all reminds me of Timothy.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
 
How can one claim to be a practicing member of the One True Catholic and Apostolic Church if one does not practice the teachings of it’s consecrated successors (Bishops)?
 
I guess it would be good to try to keep explanations for sin firmly in mind, for use on judgment day.

Yes, News, the dissenting ones,the moral relativists. You will run into them on answers…very frustrating, I usually end up dusting off my sandals and praying some more.:(:o Carlan
 
Just because a behavior is common and a habit that is hard to break, does not make that behavior non-sinful.

God said to Adam and Eve, “Do not eat the fruit.” We do not know why it would be wrong, just that God don’t do it. Was eating the fruit sinful, or was it disobeying God that was sinful? Adam and Eve’s job was to love and trust God and not get suckered by anyone not speaking with God’s authority.

If we love God, we do as He wants us to do. When we do the opposite, we sin whether we admit that sin to ourseves or to a priest in Confession. If we lie to ourselves we then have two sins.
 
The biggest problem I have with these people is this line of reasoning they use (which makes zero sense if they wish to be a part of a Church):

I disagree with ‘x’ because ‘x’ is a mistaken teaching, made by man, and my personal relationship with Jesus has nothing to do with the Church, and I feel right by Jesus’ side therefor I am right, and in any case ‘x’ is man made and infallibality means nothing because humans always make mistakes.

It just baffles me that someone could think that way. It’s like bang my head against the wall kinda stuff.

And the sad part is that these people are open about it. Openly dissenting and disobeying, and on the particular facebook page I was on this ‘Catholic’ was advocating contraception and masterbation as wonderful ‘tools’. And when I tried showing her the Truth, she called me a close minded, stupidly Traditional slave to the Vatican and its Bishops. I thought that was a slap in my face and the Vaticans.

Why would someone go so far? Just to justify their sin? I used to try justify my own but ultimately I recognized that was not only wrong and imprudent but just plain silly.

Perhaps it is IS. Ignorance and** Selfishness.**

Ignorance: Many individuals gloss right over what Jesus said and thus they ignore the power of the Holy Spirit confered upon the Apostles to go and teach all nations. I am with you until the end of time. Whatever you loose and bind on earth will be loosed and bound in Heaven.

Such folks have existed throughout the life of the Church. Some heard Jesus and walked away. Others, with earthly power, saw Jesus as a threat to their power and were against Jesus. Some disagreed with the Apostles and letters of clarification were issued BY THOSE IN AUTHORITY. Others spoke without authority.

I, am most of us on this site, do not have the authority to speak FOR God, so if anyone disagrees with my view, no real problem. But when they disagree with the considered Teaching of the Church, then a problem is present and could get too large.

Selfishness: I want what I want when I want and don’t get in my way. I am reminded of the camel and the rich man and the eye of the needle story. Life is about our free choice to do our best to serve the Lord, AS HE HAS INSTRUCTED US THROUGH HIS CHURCH, and not just as we, in much ignorance, choose to limit our understanding and commitment to best efforts to follow. When we realize we are failing, we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

I have learned to not let personal attacks bother me too much. Such attacks are mostly from Ignorance and Selfishness.

WISDOM: No one has this great gift in complete measure. Each of us should constantly pray for an increase in Wisdom for ourselves, our family and friends, and those we find vexing.

Part of Wisdon is speaking the Truth in the Spirit of Love. Sometimes that is a real effort. For me and for others who attack.
