I guess it was my time!

Of course many people have encountered JW ‘visits’, but mine was quite interesting.

A little background. I was born in Holland, but my parents aren’t from Holland. So my background is ‘foreign’.
Back to my encounter. It was raining and I had my motor parked outside the house, so I decided to put it indoors. As I was pushing my 400 lbs Kawa a man and a woman approached me and said “Hello, how are you”, in my parents’ language. I had no idea who these people were, so I was a bit dazzled as to how they knew I wasn’t “dutch”.
I wasn’t very happy with complete strangers knowing things about me and inquired as to how they knew!
The woman apparantly saw my surprise and followed up quickly with a “we’re JW” and "we got your adres from ‘a’ Dutch something. I didn’t remember what she said, but as soon as she said she was a JW it all fit.

Anyways, I had an visit from JW when I was a child. The rudeness of grown ups imposing on a defenceless childs still troubles me to this day. Luckily It’s 15 years since my last encounter and I have learned a few things since. Not in the last place thanks to my fellow Catholic bro’s and sisters on this forum. (So a big thank you for this!)

Of course the standard JW tactic followed swiftly. Dazzling lines from the bible, intertwined with some ‘interest’ in my bike to get me warmed up for further conversation.
I once read here, from former visitotees that you shouldn’t argue with them, unless you’re well versed in scriptures and your religions.
I have to say I’m not that educated on that subject, but I do know quite enough to burst the bubble in their arguments.
Also, I did good to take the advice to stear the discussion in the direction I wanted to. This was quite pleasant I have to say.
I had some quick questions about their beliefs and three times I declined their booklets, since ‘no, I don’t have further questions’ as she apparantly thought. When they kept pushing their quotes I simply added :“If you really want to follow Christ, you should follow his true Church” and related that to the ‘rock’ verse from the bible. They didn’t retort. 🙂

Intermission:
Interesting fact. The woman at the end told me, that she wasn’t even Dutch. Yet she spoke the language of my parents much better than I do!
Back to subject:

I told them that I respected that they’re doing the work of God, and I added, “well at least you think you are”. Then I said that any further discussion would be pointless since I knew who they were and they’re beliefs. Altering the bible etc etc. I hoped I wasn’t too rude to them, or coming off too arrogant, but it is my honest belief.

Well, with that in their pockets they nicely said good-bye and went on their way.
I hope this was the last of their attempts, since I don’t care for strangers preaching their strange beliefs.

I would have avoided any kind of statement like that which could imply a type of positive reinforcement even with your clarification.

Next time ask them to help you push your car into the garage, they will leave.

One time I was digging out the craw space under my front poarach, and they came to the door. So, without a word I handed them a shovel, and said, "come in and help me dig, we can chat, as we dig. They promptly dropped the shovels and left the neighborhood as quickly as possible. Another time, I was at a friends house helpping him deal with a tree that fell during a storm, two mormon missionaries, came to the backyard, and I tried to put them to work too, they likewise ran away as fast as possible. However, baptist I found will work if asked.

or you can ask them for a complete set of their literchure on cdrom UNABRIDGED that is, free of charge, starting with Russulell upto today. They don’t want non-jws to have this because one can document their many failed prophecies, flip flops on doctrine, and changes in doctrine. At one time they celebrated christmas, and even gave their books away as christmas gifts.

😃 That reminds me of a G. K. Chesterton who had a members of some obscure sect arrive at his front door; he got them to move his piano to the second floor. 🙂

ROFLMAO as well. 😃

I have yard work and need my garage cleaned out, I will remember this.

I have JW’s at my door at least 3 times a week. I bought a “No Solicitation” sign.

One even violated it. I pointed and said, do you see that sign there.

For the most part it works, but one guy said “Oh we are not trying to sell you anything”

LOL. I said you are trying to sell me on your idea of God and Jesus Christ right? He said Yeah. 🤷

I spent 15 years or so knocking on doors as a JW. Some of those years I did it full time. I never had anyone ask me to do any work for them. I probably would have. I hated door knocking. So anything would have been a welcomed relief, even piano moving! I did have a guy invite me in to watch baseball. I took him up on it. The best 4 innings the Dogers ever played 😉

The main thing to do with a JW is to make sure that YOU, not the JW, has and maintain control of the conversation.

If you never want them back follow this simple procedure…

Answer the door sitting naked on a feathered dead chicken and start babbeling and throwing chicken blood.

I’ll bet the house they will never return.

another way they won’t come back.
put a few alka seltzers in your mouth so spit is coming out of your mouth, start laughing like there is something wrong with you, and talk abnormally.

From the perspective of an ex-JW, are there any good resources on the net that you would advise people to check out in anticipation of a visit from JW’s?

Thanks,

Eric

My folks (elderly) have been visited over and over by the JW. They always come with their young son, dressed to the teeth.
It upset me that the folks would talk to them and all that. Now they live 1000 miles away, but I was with the folks for a few months this year and every time the JW would come to the door, I’d say the folks were busy.

The LAST time they showed up, I was just a bit flustered. When they wanted to see the folks, I told them that they need not come back, as we are all CHRISTIANS.

No more---------

motoeric beat me to it. Jeff’s site is one of, if not THE, best one out there. 🙂

But please, please do NOT use bible.ca, please. Did you get that? That was please. OK, thank you.

I’ve had the JW’S, Mormons, at my door, and the street preaches in my hometown, I usually invite them in, but my wife one time ran and hid herself up stairs,🙂 thanks for the moral support dear.

We get the Free Presbyterians preaching in the town centre on a Saturday morning, " the end is nigh type. "

Once had someone push a leaflet in my face asking to come to the Bethnal Church for prayers.

I said "no thanks I’m Catholic and I goto Mass, and I resent you pushing leaflets in a Catholic neighbourhood "

Never saw him again after that, anyway I don’t care who comes, in the end they leave and I’m still Catholic.

I thought about this some more. And I know I wasn’t the only JW that just hated it and was doing the door to door stuff because of parents or other pressure from insiders. It was just horrible. I was called all sorts of names, I had people sick [sic?] their dogs on me, I was sprayed with a garden hose, threatened with physical violence, and that’s some of the good days. It just effing sucked. One night I needed to go “out in field service” (aka knock on doors) to get in my required time and I started calling people from the congregation to see if I could get someone, anyone, to go with me. 45 minutes later I had called everyone on the active congregation list. No one. So I got into my car and I drove to the beach and sat on the pier and watch the sun go down and then came home and lied to my parents about my “time in the field.”

It’s an awful life. Just be kind to them no matter what. You never know; it could be the old me knocking on your door.

The next time they show up:

How about pulling out the Rosary and inviting them to join you “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
They will leave right away.

¡Patas para que os son!

They dont like my Icons.

I dont have any problems.

I actually find them less offensive than some of the protestant minority that strolls by my house. I have been shouted at by them to be an idolator in my own home.

I simply tell them they are iconoclasts.

They dont even know what that means!

I get the glazed over stare.

They dont realize how they reject the incarnation and are nestorian to boot.

JW’s are welcome to come to my home, but they wont come.

My Icons protect me.😃

I do try to witness to them though.

In a kind and respectful manner as I would like to be treated.

Well, thank you for the suggestion, although I don’t think I’ll run around naked with a slaugthered chicken in my hand 😉

“Funny” thing happend that same day. ANOTHER JW knocked on my door!!
I had not seen them in over 10 years and now two in one day. I told the kind sir that they already visited me today. “Oh dear, must have been a administrational error” He inquired as to what my reaction was and I had told him that I “wasn’t interested”. No problem he said and went on his way.
“Please tell me I’m off the list now!” I shouted after him. "No, no. We’ll be back in about 6 months.

sigh!
I though JWs don’t come back after 2 rejections, or so a guy I know told me (He’s a JW).

Oh, to make it even more interesting: I was working on my bike today and a neighbour that lives a few houses down the street came by. I noticed they had religious texts on their doors and asked him what his denomination is. “Well, I’m just a Christian. Just not one of those Idol-worshippers”.
“Idol worshippers??” I asked? “Yes, you know, like he Pope. I saw him kneeling in front of a statue”

Ufffghhhh :banghead:
I explained to him that that is not the case and I could know, since I’m Catholic.
Why are there so many people spredding lies?!
It’s seriously frustrating…
