The sweetest old man (approximately 70) came to my door this morning. All by himself and carrying a nw translation of the Bible.
He opened his Bible to a verse in Matthew, read it and asked me how I feel about these signs of “the end of this system of things.”
I told him that I do not concern myself with signs of the end because Jesus told us that no man knows the day or hour. So how I “feel” about it has nothing to do with anything. My job is to love God and my neighbor and let God take care of the rest. He looked rather flumoxed.
He then asked me how I “feel” about all the alcohol being used as a tranquilizer against the reality of the condition of the world.
I quoted Paul to Timothy to him and explained that there is nothing wrong with alcohol if used in moderation and that it’s a free will issue. I then explained free will.
He then offered me a watchtower which I took since I like to be up on what they’re teaching now. He offered his hand to shake and wished me a good morning. I then trotted off to Mass and Adoration where I prayed for this nice old man’s enlightenment through The Holy Spirit.
My point is this:
Talk to these people if they show up. They are all (at least the ones I’ve spoken with at the door) very pleasent and non-threatening even if horribly mislead. I hope I gave him a few things to consider. I look at jw visits as a golden opportunity to practice apologetics and *witness to them *about the TRUE Church.
What a wonderful beginning to my First Friday day!

That is wonderful, thank you for sharing it! It definitely gives me good ideas for when they come-a-knocking (instead of my usual “no thank you” then closing the door in their face.) There’s obviously more constructive ways to handle these types of situations. Thanks again! 🙂

I just talked to a group of Baptists that had a booth at the fair. They weren’t JW but I still felt compeled to share with them the truth. I hope I left a seed that may eventually take some scales off their eyes.

Amazing how they quoted the Bible and gave thier opinions on the verses they used but when I asked them questions about the Bible, like where did Jesus say to read it, use it, write it, etc., they became annoyed and ignored the questions. They only wanted to talk about the verses they had memorized for the fair (i.e like Jn 3:16, or OSAS verses)

They really hated it when I asked them how they could understand and see a painting if they only had one brush stroke. In context, a painting must include all the brush strokes to be a complete picture. They were well rehersed in redirecting/ignoring questions that delt with ‘hope’.

I never turn them away, some of them seem to have good qualities, mostly Mormons and Jehovah’s come to my door, I invite them in for an old chin-wag 😉 but nothing they can say will make me leave the Catholic Church, so I don’t feel threatned.

On that subject does anyone have any knowledge of good tracts that would help possibly plant those seeds in a firmer ground? 🙂
One would think that any God-fearing tract-bearing JW or Mormon would be willing to receive a tract that isn’t so ‘in your face’ as to be a turn off for them, but might in fact make them more open to Catholic thought.

Last time I was approached by one and asked if I was saved my reply was “Yes, but the day is early and there’s still plenty of work to do!” 😃

Catholic Answers sells a lot of Catholic tracts on lots of different subjects. Usually it’s $15.00 for like a hundred tracts. 15 cents per soul doesn’t seem too much to me…

How funny this thread should show up, I had two Mormon girls (well, probably older teenagers, oldest early 20’s) come to my door saturday evening that wanted to share with me the “good news of the Lord” and they asked if I had faith and knew the Lord. I said yes, I do and was trying to usher them away nicely and they asked if I had a denomination, I said “yes, I’m Catholic, so I’m all set” 😃 and started to close the door but they looked excited and said some stuff about how they don’t want to compromise my beliefs but we have a short video we can show you and some pamphlets and…but dinner was burning so I just said, “I’m sorry but no thank you, have a good night guys” and shut the door.

I don’t agree with their theology one iota but I have to give them props for having the guts to go door to door and talk about Jesus. I don’t know if I’d have the gumption to do that. I said a little prayer for them for their safety walking around at night like that and that they would come home to the church one day. Figured it couldn’t hurt, and I felt bad whooshing them away like that.

they looked excited and said some stuff about how they don’t want to compromise my beliefs
Now that’s funny! I would have asked then if they were there to ‘reinforce my beliefs’? Were the video and pamphlets of Catholic origins? If not ( ), then how the heck are mormon videos and pamphlets going to not attempt to compromise my Catholic beliefs?
I think they need a different “line”.
As I’ve said before, I do admire the tenacity of any door knockers but I reserve the right to call them on their misguided attempts to “educate” me.
