In was Halloween afternoon 1969 in Santa Maria, California. I was 6 years old and we lived on North Concord Street. The sun had not even set yet and we got our first trick or treater of the night. I wanted to answer the door. My mom always did it or some times my older brother. Later after dark we’d all go watch TV with all the lights out and just not answer the door. But right now it was still light and the kid could see us having dinner right through the window. I jumped up and ran to the door – this was my big opportunity. I opened the door quickly.
“Trick or treat!”
“We don’t celebrate Halloween it’s against our religion.”
The kid was young. I was only 6 and he was smaller than me. I could see his mother standing out on the side of the street. His eyes got big and he turned around and sprinted away from the door screaming, “COMMUNISTS! COMMUNISTS! They’re COMMUNISTS!”

I’m not sure if this is supposed to be funny, but I can’t help but laugh.

How sad!! That little boy’s mother just set him up for that  ! He could have come by any other time. And the nerve of the mother to stay at the street! If she really cared about “saving other poor souls” she would have been right there with him to share their faith with you. :banghead:

HUH? I think the storyteller was the JW and they answered the door to trick o treaters with…we don’t celebrate… The Mom waiting simply sent her child up to get candy and the child ran back screaming …now I think it is a funny story and I smiled.

No not at all. I think you’re missing it. It a freaken hysterical story! Mom on the street was just taking her young kid out before it was dark to get candy. Ever Halloween I remember this event from my childhood and I still laugh out loud. I can just see this kid asking his Dad before going out, “What if someone doesn’t give me candy?” “Oh Bill only COMMUNISTS don’t celebrate Halloween. You go have a good time with your mom.” It was 1969 remember.
