JW NWT of the Bible

So, I have a friend who is a Jehovah’s Witness, and we’ve been talking a good deal. When I mentioned that I read (in many places) that the New World Translation of the Bible was translated by 5 people with little to no experience in ancient languages, he asked me what source I could provide for him. He stated that as far as he knows the translation committee members were, and still are, anonymous. Is there a source that states these people that my JW friend might find to be authoritative on this matter?

Perhaps the evidence is in their translation itself. Because they are anonymous, there is no other information to go on. Anonymous people don’t have credentials, so their credibility is in their work.

Evangelical minister Walter Martin has made the well known claim that 5 people of the New World Bible Translation Committee were Nathan H. Knorr, Fredrick W. Franz, Albert D. Schroeder, George Gangas, and Milton Henschel. None of whom have degrees at all, never mind any kind of training in translation of the original languages of the early bible works other than Franz (or so he claims).
 
It seems to me that JWs are the only religion that places their doctrine into their NWT, instead of taking it from the bible.

No matter what source you give him he will reply “that is not an official JW source” which is a proper response. We Catholics should and do that also.

You could ask the question “why do you not publicize this info?” But all you will get is “because that would be taking glory away from God”.

The next logical question to follow would be “then why would JWs have ever used the KJV prior to the NWT?” :whacky:

Answer: “we did not have our own bible”

Question: “why not?”🤷

…let the illogical answers beget more questions.

Several scholars have said that the NWT is a good translation.

Some do, however it’s also listed as one of the translation that has a clear bias. And over 230 renderings of Jehovah in the NWT are deemed completely inaccurate and done solely to back JW theology.

What credentials and experience did Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have before they wrote the gospels? 😉
At Acts 4:13 the apostles were described by the Pharisees as “uneducated”. - Yet they were used by Jesus to spread the good news of the Kingdom throughout the ancient world. Their works and history proves who was supporting them.

Jesus further prophesied a far greater preaching work that would be taking place in the last days. (Matthew 24:14) I guess it would be the subject of another post as to who is preaching the Kingdom throughout the wold today.

However, the JW’s are happy to use whatever Bible translation people prefer. We like the NWT because it hasn’t taken God’s personal name out and replaced it with titles.
But we will use whatever translation the people we call on prefer.

It’s certainly not necessary to support our beliefs. 🙂

How does Walter Martin have any credibility when making this claim? What’s his proof? Where does he get his info on this? Can anyone answer those questions?

So, I was hoping someone could explain why his statement yields any credibility when all official JW sources I see say the team was anonymous. I don’t see that he was a JW in the past or anything like that, so is there a valid reason why we can take his claim seriously?

Probably because the team wasn’t entirely anonymous. The JW’s know who did the translation. But at the translators request the names haven’t been publicly released as they wanted the focus to be on the ultimate author God, not them as translators. But it’s not like there isn’t a record of who actually made the translation.

They probably don’t want any one to be able to point a finger at any one person for the mis translations that are in their bible. They want no questions asked of them. They certainly won’t get questions from the JW’s but maybe from outsiders and they don’t want to be held responsible.IMHO

This might need to be broken off, and if so, moderator, could you do that for us please? I would like you to support your belief that Jesus is not God using our translation of John 1 and not yours. Here it is for you:

John 1:1 In the beginning* was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Why does this passage appear only in the gospel of John and not in the other three gospels?
