I’m not sure what the concept of hell was when Jesus walked the earth. He descended into hell after he died and I believe he raised some people from there. I don’t think it was a place of punishment, just the absense of heaven and life on earth.
Lets try to reference if there was an early interpretation of a hell of eternal tortures from the Bible and early Christian Documents.

47And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48where
" ‘their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’[a] 49Everyone will be salted with fire.

Satan’s Doom
7When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the
beast and the
false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Who are the Beast and The False Profit? Any chance either of these refer to people, not spiritual beings? It is specifically referring to SATAN, THE BEAST, and THE FALSE PROFIT. 3 separate and different beings, all being tortured forever and ever.

The Dead Are Judged
11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the
lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
People are thrown into the Lake of Fire, What happens in the Lake of fire? What do we know about it? We know that Satan, The False Profit, and the Beast are all in the Lake of fire, where they are tortured forever and ever… We can only assume what happens to the others thrown in there…
Lets look at a very early Aprocryphal document called The Apocalypse of Peter:

“…and several others (66) which cannot be received into the catholic Church (67)— for it is not fitting that gall be mixed with honey. (68) Moreover, the epistle of Jude and two of the above-mentioned (or, bearing the name of) John are counted (or, used) in the catholic [Church]; [7] and [the book of] Wisdom, (70) written by the friends [7a] of Solomon in his honour. We receive only the apocalypses of John and Peter, (72) [7b] though some of us are not willing that the latter be read in church…”
