Another thing I’d like to comment on is the misteachings about Catholic “excommunication”. When one is excommunicated, they are not allowed to partake in Holy Communion. However, they are still responsible for their other Catholic duties, including attending Mass.

When speaking with a neighbor who is a JW she once compared disfellowship to excommunication, which it’s NOT.

Some misguided and judgemental Catholics might shun an excommunicated member, however, they’re not supposed to do that. They’re supposed to guide the person by example, and treat them with the same compassion and understanding anyone deserves. The goal is to help that person rectify whatever lead them to be excommunicated, not make them invisible…sometimes that’s hard to do, but that’s what Jesus would have wanted. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true.

Vasian, I feel for you, because I was in the middle of all that and know EXACTLY what your thoughts and feelings were/are. My mother was unjustly disfellowshipped and it was heartbreaking to watch her go through it.

You don’t have to even be disfellowshipped for this to happen. I have not gone to another religion (yet;)), but my wife and I have been inactive in the JW faith for years and have lived in the same town, never leaving, and we are basically avoided when we see other JW’s we know in public places. You’d think we were lepers or carry some other disease. We don’t feel bad for ourselves, but for them.

I remember my brother-in-law (a JW) talking with me about how he would not talk to his fleshly brother because he had been DFed. I innocently asked, “Why won’t you at least talk to your brother and tell him you love him and encourage him.” His answer is so typical and I expected it. “I have to choose between God and my brother and I can’t talk to him because God wouldn’t want me to.”

Would God want you to leave your family, fleshly or spiritual, out in the cold? That doesn’t sound like the Christ I read about.
Yeah, a friend of mine who is JW has a daughter that was disfellowshiped, and they won’t have anything to do with her. I can’t press the issue though because as we have seen, JW’s can dish it out but can’t take it 😛 When I press issues that might have the potential for disfellowshipping (is that a word?) or offending the “elders”, it gets kind of ugly. We just have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. It’s nice that my friend and I can talk about religious stuff though. But it’s understood we are not trying to convert each other, and in light of the push given by the WTS, I commend her for not trying that stuff with me. I appreciate it even.

It’s a shame though. Apparently, my friend’s parenting is superceded by the elders. Even if she approves something for some of the other kids, if the elders find it offensive in the least, it doesn’t get approved in the family as well. I know it’s the teaching body of any religious establishment to guide parents, but in my experience people who actually practice their faith have enough judgement to not need “elders” disapproving their decisions as parents. She had to do what they told her to do, or she would risk disfellowship for offending the elders. They were okay with it, but I felt badly for them all the same. It’s slavery and abusive, and I wish my friend and her family weren’t sucked up into it. It pains me to watch some of the dynamics. But apparently, they’re happy with their choice 🤷 And the reality of it is: we’re all free to choose.

Wow, this is painful to just hear, can’t even imagine experiencing it !
WHERE is the JOY in all this.
Jesus said- I come to bring you life, to the fullest. So many times he expressed how we can experience immense joy in this life if we put Him at the center of it.
I am sad that that is missed by so many. But there is hope for all, I know that because I discovered it so late in my life ! Funny, sometimes I laugh at myself when I think of the grief I caused myself in the ‘old days’ 🙂
Praise God for His great mercy !

“Lord Jesus, I believe, I adore, I trust and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust and do not love You. Forgiveness and Mercy…”

I want folks to know The Facts, but I am not bitter.
Never, was mine, or that of my family’s faith in our Father, and Lord Jesus Christ challenged or weakened by my experience.
In fact, quite the contrary. It strengthened all of us.

It really is sad about the lost of “friendship” and “family” for those who have lost them, due to the beliefs of the JWs.

I know that feeling well, the lady I had studied with for 7 years, became very close friends. Then when she was told to get me to convert, get baptized, and that I was “Ready” in the JWs eyes to become a “Publisher” for the Kingdom Hall, and of course, I was told to walk away from my marriage, because the JWs felt my husband was a "Threat and was keeping me from joining the JW’s Church. When I refused…

That ended the friendship, she was no longer allowed to be my friend.

in response to your statement that the bible does not reveal the trinity i have some verses that you can look up (not exhaustive) that might help you in understanding orthodox christian doctrine.

each member of the godhead inhabits the christian
john 14:23 - father
gal 2:20 - son
1 cor 3:16 - hs

each member is described as god
john 6:26 - father
heb 1:8 - son
acts 5:3-4 - hs

the 3 persons are associated equally and as one
matt 3:16&17
2 cor 13:14
1 pet 1:2&3

pluarality of god is seen in gen 1:1 where god is called elohim, which is plural. in gen 1:26 god says, “let us make man in our image.” even the hebrew word is israels great affirmation, “thou lord our god is one lord” uses a hebrew term that emphasizes plurality in unity.

here are some of the attributes of god that are expressed in christ jesus
omnipotent - heb 1:8 (all powerful
omniscient - john 16:23 (all knowing)
immutable - heb 13:8 (doesn’t change)
eternal - john 1:1 / john 8:58
perfect - heb 7:26

only god is to be worshipped yet jesus received worship
matt 14:23, 28:9,16, 17.

jesus exercises the office of deity in creation…john 1:3, col 1:16
in the forgiveness of sin…matt 9:2-6, luke 7:47,48
in raising the dead…john 11:43
he is the great judge…matt 25:31

that the holy spirit is to be understood as god (jws not only don’t believe in the divinity of the hs but also that he is not a personality. so this even gets more complex) let me just put out a few verses that speak of his personality:

communicates in words…1 cor 2:13
loves…rom 15:30
can be insulted…heb 10:29
can be lied to…acts 5:3
can be resisted…acts 7:51
can be grieved…eph 4:30
he teaches…john 14:26
he intercedes…rom 8:26
he convicts…john 16:7&8
he speaks…matt 10:20

and here’s a few that allude to his divinity:

eternal…heb 9:14
omnipresent…ps 139:7
omnipotent…rom 8:11
agent in creation…gen 1:2
can be blasphemed…matt 12:31&32
lying to is same as lying to god…acts 5:3&4
creator…job…33:4

this is alot to look up. but it is not exhaustive. may god bless you in your honest search

Although the word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible does not mean it is not so. The Bible abounds with references to the Trinity. It starts with Genesis and ends with Revelation. Jesus is shown as God, and the Holy Spirit is shown as God, and not an active force like a “radar beam”.

Just enough has been revealed to us to make us understand, for the full revelation of how it is so is well beyond our comprehension. We label it a mystery and rightly so. Those that deny the existence of the Blessed Trinity are commiting blasphemy, especially blasphemy of the Holy Spirit for relegating Him to such a degrading existence.

Study and understand your scriptures. Two thousand years of study by theologians and scholars that have proved the existence of the trinity cannot be wrong.

  • Not to mention they call the Catholic Church and the Pope the Whore of Babaloyn! When I offer to give her Catholic Pamplets, she can’t take them.* They aren’t allowed to.* After all when you are brainwashed to believe that the Catholic Religion is The Whore of Babaloyn and the Anti-Christ, it’s a no go.
The Catholic Church is the Whore of Bablylon…But bad as it is to be the Whore of Babylon, an article in the Watchtower considered Protestantism to be even worse, because it is the daughter of the Whore!Umm…if Protestantism is the daughter of the Whore, what does that make the Watchtower Society?* The granddaughter of the Whore? And what does that say?

No, not the granddaughter… The rebellious step-child!:D:D:D:D

When I hear the argument from JW’s that the Trinity is wrong because the word foes not exist in the bible, I sometimes remind them that neither is “Governing Body”, “Pioneer”, “Watchtower Society” etc, etc andyet they cling to these things. It seems a double stadard.

The WT believes that as soon as the last of the apostles died, everything went apostate and the bible was twisted. If that were true, wouldn’t it make sense that when the CC compiled the NT that that would’ve been the golden opportunity to “insert” the term “Trinity” wherever they saw fit and put to rest once and for all anyone not agreeing or understanding what the Trinity is?

dj dave; More…

And finally regarding the word soul…if you would be consistent in your rendering of the word in your Bible you would easily see that it no way implies immortality or something that exists outside the physical body There is absolutely no scriptural justification for that! Consider:
JL: Christ seems to be under the CLEAR impression the SOUL does EXISTS outside the body. [Mt10:28 And fear not them which KILL THE BODY, but are NOT ABLE TO KILL THE SOUL: but rather fear him which is able to destroy BOTH soul AND body in hell.]

God alone has disposition of the SOUL and HE alone can destroy BOTH in the lake of fire. Where does that living SOUL go between bodily death and the resurrection of the body, so BOTH can be thrown into Gehenna or the lake of fire?

The Bible uses the word soul in DIFFERENT ways seat of human emotion, Ps42:2, whole person or living being, Gn2:7, and as an immortal spirit which animates a body, Mt10:28, Rv6:9-10. The WT limits the meaning NOT scripture.

Jer51:14 The LORD of hosts hath sworn by HIMSELF (NEPHESH, Hebrew),… [Amos 6:8 The Lord GOD hath sworn by HIMSELF (NEPHESH)…, Job23:13 But he is in one mind and who can turn him? And what his SOUL (NEPHESH) desireth, even that he doeth]. Ps11:5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his SOUL (NEPHESH) hateth].

NEPHESH, is speaking of God himself, In this context, nothing could be more IMMATERIAL, INTANGIBLE, INVISIBLE, IMMORTAL, or CONSCIOUS than nephesh in this CONTEXT.

[1Kgs 17:21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, O Lord my God, let this child’s SOUL (NEPHESH) come into him again. 23 And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah; and the SOUL (NEPHESH) of the child came into him again, and he revived.

[Gn35:18 And AS HER SOUL (NEPHESH) WAS DEPARTING (for she died), she called his name Ben-o’ni; but his father called his name Benjamin.]

Zech12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, WHICH stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and FORMETH THE spirit (ruwach, Aramaic) OF MAN WITHIN HIM.

Notice YOUR post # 172, Protestants who identify Michael as Jesus Christ, 3 Sep 09; forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=5655657&postcount=172

Post 172: [Peter also describes the hope such ones possess as “precious and very grand promises, that through these you may become sharers in divine nature.” (2Pe 1:4) [COLOR=“Blue”]They must undergo a change of nature, giving up human nature to obtain “divine” nature, thus sharing with Christ in his glory. They must die a death like Christ’s—maintaining integrity and giving up human life forever—and then they receive immortal, incorruptible bodies like Christ’s by a resurrection. (Ro 6:3-5; 1Co 15:50-57; 2Co 5:1-3)]

The WT unwittingly has confirmed Christ IS God saying He has a DIVINE NATURE. Christ does have a DIVINE NATURE because He is God. God alone has A DIVINE NATURE. The WT says the 144 thousand will not have the NATURE of a HUMAN BEING, but they undergo a **CHANGE OF NATURE giving up HUMAN NATURE to OBTAIN DIVINE NATURE.] If the 144 thousand’s NATURE BECOME DIVINE that would make those 144 thousand equal to God in dignity if not power. God and ONLY God has a DIVINE NATURE and there is NONE beside HIM. There is only ONE GOD the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God ALONE is DIVINE.

Those who belong to Christ share God’s divine nature when our God indwells the soul, but man’s nature does not become DIVINE. We do actually become his adopted children SHARING his very NATURE, when baptized by water and the Spirit and receiving his divine nature by the indwelling Holy Sprit. All God’s people even here on earth share his divine nature as long as we are in grace. In fact his divine nature MUST be indwelling us while we are still alive on earth. We cannot receive it after death, it is received before death or not at all. That indwelling, sharing of divine nature, IS the gift of eternal life.

Notice again YOUR post 172: [The apostle Paul explains that it is not the body that is resurrected****, but rather, he likens their experience to the planting and sprouting of a seed, in that “God gives IT a body just as it has pleased him.” (1Co 15:35-40) ‘‘IT’’ is the soul, the person, that is resurrected, with a body to suit the environment into which God resurrects him. “]

Tell me would this ‘‘IT’’, which the WT says IS the SOUL, NOT the resurrected BODY, would the “IT” be immaterial, intangible, invisible, and immortal? If not then what is this ‘‘IT=SOUL’’ that gets ANOTHER body? Have you ever seen this material IT, which is NOT the BODY? Well now if the body is not resurrected then we can DISCOUNT the WT insistence NEPHESH is ALWAYS the body or WHOLE PERSON, isn’t that a total contradiction? Good grief what a convoluted twist to follow.

Again If “IT” is NOT the BODY then IT must be the SOUL, as you state above. Then the WT has also unwittingly admitted the soul is a spirit. What else could it be if IT’S NOT the body or whole person. IT is just as Christ tells us in Mt10:28 man is BOTH body AND soul=IT and Christ tells us that the soul does NOT die with the body. The WT twist is more like pagan Greek philosophy. What a convoluted contradiction.**

jlhargus:

That is a very good post, but sorry to say it means nothing to a JW or the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. According to them they alone have the truth and anything outside of what they teach or publish is a lie and of no cosequence.

Our only hope is to get through the brainwashing of the individual JW and make him/her think for themselves. Meanwhile we pray to the Holy Spirit for help. God Bless.

As JW’s, they say pretty much say the same thing about those that are not in their org.
They believe that everyone else is brainwashed, and cannot think for themselves.
