JW's and Transplants--NEW?

I just found this article on the JW homepage:

On the footnote it says:
Jehovah’s Witnesses view organ transplant operations as a matter of individual conscience.
Is this what they have always taught or is this new? I thought you couldnt get a transplant as a JW?

Other interesting things about the article, under the heading of “troubled history of blood transfusions.”
All I can say is wow, pure propaganda, not a single mention of the fact lives are saved, instead it uses scare tactics and inflated figures. Not once does it mention people get transfusions because their life is at stake, instead they quitely ignore this. Even the “quotes” arent even cited yet passed off as authentic and trustworthy.

How in the heck can you “treat” without using blood??? Sounds like they are trying to have their cake and eat it too.

It’s a good thing none of our family is JW. My mil needed a blood transfusion 10 years ago (emergency hysterectomy). She had to have 4 pints. My mom had to have 2 pints 10 years ago (ulcerative colitis) and my dad recently (last year) had to have 6 or 7 pints (hairy-cell leukemia). If we followed the JWs our children would never have known their grandmothers and would have lost one of their grandfathers at a young age! I just can not understand this belief of their’s.

That “global multibillion-dollar-a-year industry” has saved MILLIONS, of lives! It takes experimentation to learn. If our family had taken that view of JW I would never have lived to see my first birthday. However, since I had an uncle who was born with heart problems and was willing to give his life by allowing doctors (back in the 50s) to perform experimental heart surgery on him, he unknowling saved the life of his own niece some 25 years later. Think of how many more souls would never have had the chance to be born if we took their view.

No, prior to the 1980’s organ transplants were forbidden for JWs. You might find the following website on Blood Transfusions very interesting and even scary.

i believe the transplant accreptance came into effect around 1993.
I remember it because a former friend of mine who was a studying witness at the time died without a transplant, and had she accepted one, she’d still be alive today. i remember it very well, it happened around the time she died, so yes, they can accept transplants.
