On the back of the much talked about “the end of false religion is near”
Is an order form for the brochure
“Keep on the watch” Underneath in smaller print:
For what? Why is it especially urgent now?

If I had a dime for everytime the word urgent or “the end of this system of things” or the word armeggedon was uttered by a Jw in any given scentence I would be wealthy.

Its just their way.

BTW on the back in bold –
…Now is the time to act. Do not delay…

COme on.

Damascus - Speaking (again) of the tract, and how it relates to the question asked at the beginning of this thread:

"Can anyone confirm that the JW leadership in Brooklyn is telling their people that Armeggadon is going to happen very soon…?"

Well, the title of the tract is - “The End of False Religion is Near” , and in it’s text it says:

" Soon, though, an amazing event will take place… In a sudden, shocking move, the world’s political powers will turn on false religion and completely destroy her! "

Back in 1971, in the book “The Nations Shall Know That I Am jehovah - How?” - they predicted that the attack on “false religion” would begin before the end of the twentieth century :

“Shortly within our twentieth century, the ‘battle in the day of Jehovah’ will begin against the modern anti type of Jerusalem, Christendom.” (The Nations Shall Know That I Am Jehovah - How? 1971 p. 216)

The headquarters of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society is in Bethel, NY, not Brooklyn.
It is a self-sustaining community that grows all it needs using the slave labor of the neophytes who donate a couple-few years to the society to do Jehovah’s will.
The people are very sincere in their love for God, but their “theology” and I put it in quotes because it changes every few years (I mean it used to teach Jesus died on a crucifix!) and the members say I should come back because 'It’s a new organization" (like it is every 3 years or so) but it is run by people who make Pharasiees seem Socrates, as far as honesty goes.

Welcome, wretchedsinner !!!

I too am an ex JW now Catholic. What a gift the Church is !!

As for the Watchtower Society, Inc., I think they should change their name to “Armageddon, Incorporated.” 😛

Jaypeeto4 (aka Jaypeeto3)

Oh, by the way wretchedsinner, how long and how long ago, were you a JW ??
Were you around “the Hall” during the Anti-SMURF hysteria of the 1980s ? I laugh with deep embarassment now at how, even though I was 22, I listened wide-eyed at Witnesses told, in all seriousness, stories of how hapless Witness Women were being attacked and bitten on their ankles by little Smurf dolls that their children had, which had come to demonic life and were biting them, etc. LOL !! The nutty things we believed in !!! 😛

Wow, that is amazing. Attack of the smurf dolls? Wonder what GI Joe would do to them? 😃

Today for his homily my parish’s assistant priest spoke about this “DoomsDay Letter” that was being sent all around in his home country of Guam. He connected it to today’s Gospel - NO one knows the hour when Jesus will come again. Only God the Father knows. I wish I had been able to ask him if the letter he got back then was connected to the Jehovah Witnesses.

The Witnesses believe that a lot of things have, or could have, demons. That is also part of the reason why they may be reluctant to take “Christendom’s” literature when it is offered to them in their door-to-door work; they are told that it contains “doctrines of demons” (1 Tim 4:1)

So does that mean they think individual people that are not JW are demon posessed?

Not so much people… but things - it was my experience that it would be because of something you had in your home, like a Ouji board. I would’ve believed that your home had demons if you had that.

No, not neccesarily. Under the influence of the demons to some degree or the other - yes.

Interestingly, and I believe Jaypeeto will verify this, they believe that the way to deal with Smurf attacks and other forms of demon harassment, is to say out loud the name “Jehovah”.

Compare that with these scriptures:

Mark 16:17 (Jesus speaking) And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; (emphasis added)

Acts 16:16-18 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. She followed Paul and us, crying, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I charge you** in the name of Jesus Christ** to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. (empasis added)

Indeed (I grew up JW and left it when I was 18, for the new comers). When I was maybe 10 or 11 I had quite a collection of rubber animals / monsters. King Kong, snakes, rats, bats, your basic rubber toy boy stuff. I was a liar and a half and my mother was convinced it was demonic activity because I had these rubber toys. One night I was forced to tear them up and throw them in the trash. My therapists is amazed I never climbed a water tower 😛

According to Watchtower statistics, in January 1981, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (founded 1896), which is the focal point of the organization, had known branches in more than 100 lands and missionary works and Kingdom preaching in over 250. It’s literature is distributed in 110 languages, and the Society’s volunteers (called publishers) numbered 563,453. The Society has become a great disseminator of propoganda and a challenge to the zeal of every Christian.
In the year 1908 the headquarters of the movement was transferred to Brooklyn, New York, where property was purchased (17 Hicks Street) and became know as “The Brooklyn Tabernacle”. The founder Charles Taze Russell died on October 31, 1916, aboard a train in Texas.
The followers of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society are managed in a closely-controlled, tightly knit organizational structure that is dictated from the Governing Body in Brooklyn, New York, and is not open to any adaptation or revision from any other authority.
Prospective members are encouraged to commit themselves to the Society as quickly as possible and become members through baptism by immersion at the local congregational level.
Groups meetng together are called congregations, but the places where they meet are called Kingdom Halls, not churches.
JW’s have only one day of ceremony each year, the memorial of Christ’s death at Passover.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society has weathered the storms of its inconsistent and turbulent history by enforcing absolute control over its members and by excluding anyone who dares to question anything. They will defend their doctrines after memorizing them adamently, even when there defense is irrational, unbiblical, and unhistorical.

Ah yes, the evil smurfs…

There was a lady in my Kingdom Hall who told the story of a smurf doll that was brought to the Kingdom Hall one time and began levitating and then rushed out of the hall and down the street…This, of course, was a sign to the JWs that smurfs are demonic and that no good JW would own a smurf doll.

Also, when I was in the 5th or 6th grade, my class went to the New Orleans museum of art to see a Peruvian art exhibit. We were looking forward to this field trip all year. My parents gave me money to buy a souvenir. So, at the end of the trip, I bought a really sharp T-shirt. It had the insignia of the New Orleans Museum of Art and pictures of some of the artifacts that we saw on it. (I have always been a collector of T-shirts from the places that I visit.)

Well, when I got home, I showed my parents the T-shirt that I had bought as a souvenir. (In fact, a bunch of us bought the same T-shirt and we had plans to wear it the same day at school not long after the field trip.) In any case, when I showed my parents the T-shirt, you would have thought that I had brought Satan himself inside the house. I was quickly chastized for bringing demonic art into the house and was told that I was not allowed to wear the shirt and that the shirt must be destroyed.

I was in shock and in tears. I guess the tears got to my mother as she said I could wear the shirt one time to school and after that it had to be destroyed. I think they burned it after I wore it to school one time.

Ah, yes, growing up dub…an experience I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Some of the things I have been seeing in IRC and the lists tend to indicate this to me.
Anyone who is not predicting Armeggadon now is simply engaging in wishful thinking. I think it is hard to look at all of the threats in the Middle East without believing that some kind of final scene is at hand whether or not you believe in God. With the nutjob in Iran and the threats by Israel to take him out and our own presence in Iraq … it is not a pretty picture and we better hope Jesus is going to save us from it. Predict it long enough and it is bound to happen.

On the subject of when the end will come, this was the Gospel reading for yesterday according to the Revised Common Lectionary (which we Lutherans - at least of the ELCA variety) use.

Mark 13:1–8
As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”
3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4"Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" 5Then Jesus began to say to them, "**Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. **7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
(Emphasis added.)

In my sermon, I used Jim Jones and David Koresh as examples of those who will lead people astray – with terrible consequences. And they are certainly not the only ones to have done so. We are called to “beware that no one leads [us] astray” so that we don’t follow the false messiahs or prophets to our destruction.

Also, any time a disaster (natural or man-made) happens, people seem to come out of the woodwork proclaiming that the end is near and that God is coming to punish the world (or a country or a specific group of people) for its sins. They seem to forget that the past 2000 years have been filled with wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines and many other disasters yet we still await the end times. Only God knows when the last day will come. Any person who claims to know is a false prophet.

Just a few thoughts on the subject.

Peace,
Pastor Gary

I recall the JW’s telling everyone in our neighbourhood that ‘the end was nigh’ and would happen before the year was out!!

That was in 1994…we are still waiting

Maybe Jehovah of the Witnesses nixed the idea since all the smurfs were no longer the growing threat to humanity anymore.

But those T-shirts…

They are so supersituous!
