JWs water not wine?

i was told to start a new thread if i wanted this answered. so is it true that johovah’s witnesses use water instead of wine in the “memorial” of the last supper
and who exactly are the persons recieving or celebrating this memorial?

JW’s pass red wine (not water) and unleavened bread once per year. This occurance is on Nisan 14th of the Jewish calender, the same day the Passover occurred. The Passover was an annual event… and the Memorial is similarly observed annually, not daily, weekly, or monthly.

All JW’s and other interested parties “celebrate” this day as a memorial or rememberence of what Christ did in our behalf, providing a ransom sacrifice… providing forgiveness of sins, and salvation for mankind.

Those who partake of the emblems are those in the New Covenent… Remember, not everyone was in the “Old Covenant”, but others benefitted from it without being “in” it. Likewise, not everyone is “in” the “New Covenant”… but others benefit from it.

Although most religions believe all their members should partake and that everyone’s headed for heaven, JW’s understand the Bible to teach that the vast majority of humans will ultimately live on a pardise earth.

Only a smaller group of 144,000 have been bought from the earth to live in heaven as kings and priests along with Jesus forming the Kingdom govenment preached by Jesus.

Currently, 15-16 million people observe the annual Memorial with us each year. About 7 million are JW’s, and the others are interested associates.

Currently about 8,000 believe themselves to be anointed and part of the heavenly government. This number is dwindling each year.

Thus, only a small number (about 8,000 worldwide) partake in the emblems because they believe they are “in” the New Covenant.

The rest of us believe we will be part of the earthly group discussed at Matt 5:5 and Psa 37:9-11 and do not partake.

Although not “in” the New Covenant, we believe we are recipients of the value and blessings of that Covenant.

Im pretty sure I have read that the LDS (Mormons) uses water instead of wine for their “communion service”.

Also, I think they do this every Sunday with the males doing the consecrating. Im not sure who partakes, though I would assume anyone is allowed to.

Two questions:
  1. Where does the Bible teach only a select few Christians are allowed to partake? I dont recall any such restrictions.
  2. How does a JW know if they are part of the select few?

Red wine is used. I was a JW for about 15 years. My parents used to provide the materials for the Memorial often. Red Wine was always used.

how would i know if i were one of the annoited? (part of the heavenly government) could i just descide this on my own? and then partake of the emblems? is there some special training or teaching i must adhere to?

They believe that “god’s spirit speaks to their spirit” ala Romans chapter 8 (which they believe applies ONLY to the “annointed” not anyone else) and they just “know”. It is the closest thing to a Catholic mystery that they have. Also they believe their “fruits” will determine if the call is legit. And they also believe that only substitutes for unfaithful “branches” will be “grafted in” at this time because they general consensus is that since 1935 when the other group–the Great Crowd–was identified that the annointed remnant was pretty much complete. Not sure how they manage to maintain the 8000 partakers every year, ten years ago when I was still involved it was closer to 5000, so apparently there have been some become unfaithful before they finished their earthly sojourn.

JW’s understand the Bible to teach that YHWH’s orginal purpose was for mankind to live on earth. What would have happened if Adam and Eve wouldn’t have sinned? We don’t read anything that said they were initially destined to die, nor were they destined to live in heaven… it was all about the earth.

Jesus did talk about some people going to heaven… and he also talked about others inheriting the earth (Matt 5:5; Psa 37:9-11)

Those chosen by Jesus and YHWH to join them in heaven as part of the Kingdom government sincerely believe they have been chosen… Whether they are right or wrong, is a serious issue. Each of them understands that if they are incorrect in their understanding, it is a serious mistake.

Ultimately, they are responsible for the correctness of their understanding… It’s not something they specifically chose for themselves… nor something they’ve taken special classes, or trained for…

No, JW’s clearly understand YHWH is omnipotent and HE could certainly force humans to do anything he wanted… however he did create us with free will… he has allowed a temporary detour, and will ultimately accomplish his original purpose for humans living on a paradise earth…

Incidentally, I know this because my father claims to be one of the annointed and I grew up within site of Brooklyn Bethel in the company of many other ‘remnant’ and Governing Body who were personal friends of my family.
I do not know if BibleSteve knows of any of the annointed or has spent much time with any of them, they are getting fewer and farther between nowadays.

Jehovah’s Witnesses used red wine and either “Matzoh” flat bread or else a loaf of unleavened wheat bread in their annual memorial.

Often the wine is in a plain glass goblet, not a chalice.
It was quite a spectacle watching our congregation pass around a plate of bread and a nearly-full goblet of wine that was sloshing in the glass from person to person with no one partaking.
A few Witnesses would gaze lovingly at the wine in the glass
before passing it to the next person in the row and sometimes the wine sloshed out of the glass goblet and into people’s laps as the goblet was being passed from person to person.

We had one or two old ladies and an old man in our congregation who claimed to be “of the anointed.” One lady and the old man
were reserved and only took a small sip each out of the glass.
The other old lady turned the goblet up and unceremoniously guzzled down about 4 or 5 ounces of wine.

It is the Mormons who use plain white sandwich bread chunks and thimbles of water in their “Sacrament meetings.”
JWs use wine.
