Does Ruckman auction cars when he’s not “Speekin da werd of gawd”?

Two questions…
  1. How on earth did Karl keep his cool during all that?
  2. Why do all Baptist preachers sound exactly like Jerry Falwell?
They don’t. We have one that’s a friend of the family.

I would really like to see John Martignoni debate a Ruckman type (since he is way too old by now) . Does anyone know when he is going to debate anyone new?

I have DSL which can be unbearably s-l-o-w so it’ll probably take me about 8 hours to see both videos, but 85 min. into part 1 I am struck with how calm and articulate Mr Keating is, while Dr Ruckman just seems to be running at the mouth and saying things that even I, as a former independent fundamental KJV-only Baptist, was going “HUH!?!?”

ex: We know the Bible is the inspired Word of God because of scientific and mathematical statistics??? I never *ever *heard that in all my years as a Baptist.

The debate was good. Ruckman was preaching it seemed. He spits out so many quotes and verses he can’t be kept up with. Ruckman is also a very good charimatic speaker. The Baptists ate it up. He was down home with a really good voice. It is very hard not be swayed by him. He is a very entertaining preacher.
Karl Keating was in the Lion’s Den, no doubt, he had a very good position in which he opened and directed the course of the debate by bringing up topics first. So KK like a general in a battle chose his battle ground. Unfortunately KK didn’t have the Charisma of Ruckman he seemed very intellectual almost to a fault. Ruckman used this against him it. Refering to Karl as a lawyer, and to himself not being very smart etc.(even though he has an advanced degree)
The Audience with the exception of a few was fair and cordial. The Catholics didn’t speak well at all. They bumbled, they had an idea but didn’t know how to say it or posit a question.
Ruckman did preach about the Bible he was constantly opening, unzipping, thumbing through it. Isn’t that almost idolatry? He seemed to worship the book. The Baptists don’t understand the reverance we have for it. I wish it was brought up. At mass the procession carries the book. They take great care of it. Place it carefully in the sanctuary. Incense it. We stand in respect of the gospels. It is honored. What do the Baptists do? Slap it and wave it in the air. Have you ever seen a Catholic do that? I haven’t.

I watched the first half hour of the first debate. It seemed all Ruckman was doing was taking a couple quotes from various Catholic sources and wrenching them out of context to “prove” his point.

I think Ruckman did a poor job explaining how people could be saved for the 1,500 years between the ascension and the printing press. This was a very good question from a Catholic (I think) in the audience. Ruckman said that those without Bibles could not be saved by the Christian faith since they couldn’t read it and interpret it themselves. They could only be saved by following their conscience. He could not admit that for those 1,500 the Catholic Church was responsible for guarding the faith and the Bible for that long stretch of time. He alos said that the King James Bible is inerrant but no one called him on that.

I would have asked him if the Apostles wrote the King James version directly. If not, then why is that translation inerrant and not others.

Does anyone have a website that has all these debates grouped together along with a calendar of upcoming debates?

I know a lot of Baptists of different varieties, including a lot of Baptist preachers, and I never heard any of them, even the most anti-Catholic, spout any of this stuff.

I just started listening to this for a bit. I can see why Karl doesn’t debate anymore. This Ruckman guy was just childish and I didn’t even feel like my intellect was stirred listening to him.

When he tried to prove that the Church didn’t have “unity” because he found a book apparently written by a priest who didn’t believe that the woman in Revelation was Mary, I started to feel like I was wasting my time. It was amateur hour. Now we’re going to argue that if we can find a priest who isn’t 100% on board with the Church, the Church collapses?

Why isn’t there a fallacy of argument crash-course at the start of every debate so we can avoid this kind of unproductive tactic. Good for Karl for not debating anymore.

I would ask all of you who viewed this debate on YouTube to post comments on the video there as well. YouTube gets far more public exposure than this site does and it would be good for those viewing the video to know that not everyone is an anti-Catholic or atheist (which are the predominant players on YouTube). Often the comment sections of videos like this on YouTube are nothing but fellow anti-Catholics patting each other on the back. It would be great to get thoughtful, intelligent responses such as those found here posted there as well.

Don’t say things like that. We still have the 8th commandment, you know.

I was raised Southern Baptist, and I never met a Jerry Falwell style preacher. Most Baptist preachers that I’ve encountered have a better style and, in fact, a better theology in their sermons than most Catholic priests I’ve heard.

Actually the priest is on board with the Church. We’re allowed to have different opinions about Scripture which haven’t been dogmatically defined. So this is the point that Karl should’ve brought up (if he did I apologize I don’t have an hour of my life to waste listening to Ruckman bash the Church).

Because this wasn’t a real debate, it was a free for all and Karl was like Ignatius of Antioch when he was fed to the lions. Scripture says to not cast your pearls before swine.

I am bumping this because I recently posted a thread linking to this very debate (sorry moderators - I didn’t find this thread until now. Feel free to remove the new thread!)

I echo many of the comments already offered. Mr. Keating, thank you for such courage, kindliness, and fortitude. I think it is not an understatement to say that Mr. Keating’s actions were a fine imitation of so many who have come before us. It is out of love that he subjected himself to jeers, insults, and pain. Love of the very people inflicting all of this on him.

We must pray for misguided false teachers such as Dr. Ruckman. As poisonous as his words and actions were (did anyone else get the urge to scream when Ruckman was flapping around our Tradition texts as if they were yo-yos? Some respect he had), we must hope that he will come around. Not just for his sake, but for the sake of hundreds of thousands dreadfully misled into such vitriol and hate.

Apparently, Mr. Ruckman now believes a number of the most absurd postulations of dreamscape imaginable. Mr. Keating is internationally known and his tracts are all over (found them in my own parish here in the East!). For those ‘Bible Believers,’ I do think that Christ said that ‘by their fruits we shall know them…’ 😃
