Katy Perry on Late Night

I am watching “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and Katy Perry is on. She is wearing a shirt which looks like it has the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary on it. I know she’s not Catholic but not much else about her. (Cut me some slack, I’m old! 🙂 ) I hate to think that she’s making some kind of weird statement to somebody, but I don’t think she’s wearing the shirt as a nod to Our Lady of the Rosary and the Pope’s consecration of the world to Mary. The timing seems all wrong. Anybody know the story on this girl? BTW, insomuch as Fallon is Catholic, you’d think he’d say something, idk 🤷

Aren’t her parents fervent protestant pastors? Now this is really awkward :whistle:

Didn’t see it but Katy Perry has strong Protestant Christian roots, although I think she has largely stepped away from the faith.

Perhaps she is just playing up/ overplaying the Catholic School Girl look ?

Yes. I have seen Katy Perry’s Dad and Mum on protestant tv confessing their faith, and talking frankly about how the fame of their daughter impacts them. They sounded like really good down to earth people with a faith.

Katy Perry in the music industry, will need to keep reinventing herself, because the fickle target audience (teens) works on the principle that whatever was so last week, and she will require a changing persona to remain in touch with her fan base.

I wouldn’t even know any songs this person sings, but I know she was a former Christian Music singer before going mainstream pop. The daughter of a Protestant Christian family I know had once expressed disappointment at the change-over. Probably a faddish stunt.

One of her current hits is “Roar” which is about in a vague way about standing up of oneself from bullying. I think there were HS school contests using that song to make anti-bullying videos. Her official you tube video shows her ending up in a skimpy jungle outfit, sitting down with her legs apart. This outfit here looks like she is trying to be some Catholic School girl and I would bet she isn’t really aware of what she is wearing or it’s meaning. It falls in the same group has rock stars wearing rosaries and crosses. They don’t really know what they are doing. “Father forgive them, they know not what they do”

She is mocking Catholicism. Katy is wearing a mini-skirt, hair is in pig tails, and her shirt has the image of the Virgin Mary. It’s a naughty Catholic school girl outfit.

I agree with you. The sexy school girl uniform was a big trend in England over ten years ago, I guess she’s a little behind the trend. I also think this is along the same thing Madonna did with rosaries. I just feel sad for them, living without a strong faith is a scary thing; trust me I tried doing it.

I’m pretty sure she does, because she grew up in a devout, Christian home (Protestant). This is a trend, and she has to be in step with the times. 🤷
 
Yes her parents were strong servant protestants and she was raised Christian but during her teenage years she stepped away from it and my understanding is that she rebelled against it. My understanding now is that she follows the hari krishna, she even had a wedding in India and before that she was talking about the greatness of hari Krishna.
 
I honestly think it’s something she did without much thought. A lot of stores have religious themed clothing floating around. I see shirts with gratuitous cutouts that have a cross on the front. It’s not about mocking Catholicism, it’s ignorantly going along with fashion, and fashion right now is religious symbols for fashion’s sake, whether it is your faith or not.
