Hello,

Karl Keating did an article on “The World’s Worst Intercessory Prayers” quite a while back.

Well, guess what!

We had them at the Mass I attended today (although I must say it was involved with the homily-not the actual intercessory prayers). Number 2, Number 6, and Number 7 on his list (among others that I’ll spare you) were read off.

Technically, I guess there’s nothing actually wrong with those prayers, but this is a Catholic Church, not a fifth-grade Thanksgiving collage (which probably aren’t allowed anymore-but that’s a different issue for a different forum).

Anyway, this particular parish is one of the more conservative, traditional parishes, so that gives you an idea what’s going on in the diocese (which is ironically the focal point of the first half of Keating’s article).

I guess I just want to voice my disapproval of this type of thing.

your parish probably subscribes to other publications by this press, and as subscriber was sent free volume of “prayers of the faithful” arranged for the liturgical year, and someone has decided to use the easy way out and quote those prayers verbatim without much thought or reflection.

There’s no way these prayers were being made seriously. The priest must have been kidding around. Even liturgical liberals must realize how stupid these prayers are.

No, he most definitely was not joking around. He was trying to prove a point about all the things in life that we should be thanking God for and don’t (i.e. everything). He said that he likes that particular prayer because it highlights little things in life that totally slip by unnoticed.

He made some good points, but I think there’s better ways to do it.
