Hello Everyone,
Code:
Let me start off by saying I'm a teenager, I a little more advanced mentally than I want to be because of some mistakes I made in my early teens those being things that go against my personnel set of morals. That set of Morals is a Catholic set, I was or a better word is am being raised in a conservative Catholic family. My Grandparents and extended family along with my parents and I go to mass every weekend together but, I have always wanted to be different in 7th grade my school brought in a speaker who asked us how many of us were virgin's, they did the same thing in 8th grade and every influence on my life as been that sex is bad this coming from adult's. My parents blocked me from negative media, and shows like Jersey Shore, Family Guy etc. until I was 13.

It was then that I began to want to be different I started to drink and by 14 I had had sex. The party scene came to me at an early age. But then I through away the whole Catholic thing, I mean what does an old man sitting on a golden throne have anything to do with my life right? I became what some would call a "Hipster" or new age. Not as far as religion but I became a self proclaimed philosopher. Anyway my partying got out of hand and I kept having Sex, because hey everyone else is doing right?

The climax of all this came when I was 16 I got my girlfriend pregnant or so she says and she had an abortion. I am not sure if she actually did she might have just been trying to scare me, but scare me it did I got home and cried, then I cried some more, and a little more what kind of person was I.

Anyway I lasted a year of self-hate and pity, I still partied but I haven't had sex or drank or anything like that in a year. I am finally coming back around I have a catholic set of morals and I will stick to them, but what I haven't gotten back is God I label myself an agnostic but I feel that he will come back to me after I come around again. But in order to do that I have to live with myself so how do I do that? I havent a clue with everyone around me that is my age being like what I was (at my school not everyone I know) how do I live with a catholic set of morals?
P.S. sorry about the long post

If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of school to do attend?

And the answer to your question is that you have to be countercultural and refuse to engage in immoral activity even though you may be pressured to do so. Don’t berate others for what they are doing, just say that you aren’t going to do it, because you think it’s wrong. If you can be strong and do this, there are probably a few others who will join you.

Hi Codix,

I can relate to your story. Mine isn’t exactly the same, but I too abandoned my religious upbringing and got myself into a lot of trouble. Being an “artsy” type, I fell into kind of a Beatnik crowd–drugs, sexual immorality… the whole thing.

To give it to you short and sweet, the answer is: courage.

If you’re anything like I was at your age, you probably thought you were being courageous by rejecting God and religion, but the truth is it doesn’t take any courage at all, especially nowadays. As you express an interest in philosophy and New Age ideas, I’m taking it you’re a bit of a creative soul. This is a very easy and common trap for creative types to fall into. The strong sense of individuality that comes with it lends itself easily to a strong desire for nonconformity and rebellion, but the irony is that we still end up conforming to a preconceived notion of noncomformity; we still want to fit in, we just find another group to conform ourselves to–namely, the “hip” crowd.

So, if you really want to do this, there are no shortcuts. In my case, it required me to essentially leave my life behind: old habits, old friends, old attitudes. It wasn’t easy, and I’m still working on it all. Don’t let anyone tell you religion is for the weak: it takes guts to truly follow Christ. Though it wouldn’t hurt to pray and ask for a little bit more of them. 😉

Good luck and God bless you.

The starting point is to go to Confession.

And keep going, every two weeks. You’ll get tired of confessing the same things, and if you have a good confessor, he’ll help you. I know a young priest, a real nice guy, who is brutal in confession. Not mean, just intense. He’ll stop me and say, “So what are you going to do different? It’s no use confessing the same thing over and over if you just keep doing it. You need to change your behavior. So what are you going to do different?” And he keeps pressing and won’t let me go on until I answer his question. It’s rough sometimes. I come out feeling drained, and it only lasted a few minutes!

Download an Examination of Conscience. Here’s one. You can find others by googling. The path gets real narrow real fast when you know what to avoid.

also been in a similiar situation - i even labeled myself an agnostic - but then i realized i have a void and I went to confession after a decade and repented for a lot of sins - and after I felt better, started going to church and praying the rosary - I can’t change the past but I can change my future and SO CAN YOU!
