Keeping demons out of your home

this entire discussion smacks of superstition and a misunderstanding of the nature and use of sacramentals, and the difference between the sacramentals themselves and the blessings attached to them. I suggest we all go back to the CA homepage and read up a bit on this topic before we start driving the Protestants among us nuts. If you want to keep demons out of your home don’t invite them in. Keep evil influences out including those that come through the media. Most of all, read the letter of James about the evil that comes out of our own mouths.

Wow. I have never heard of blessed salt. What is it and how do you get it?
Isn’t this the salt used at baptism? I would imagine you could get it from your priest, or have your priest bless some salt.

Simony is actually charging for the blessing- that is, a $10 rosary sold for $100 for the sole reason it was blessed by the Pope. It is not simony to pay reasonable market value (including transportation costs) for an object, and items that have been blessed can be sold (just not sold at a premium).

There is a special prayer a priest can use for blessing salt. I had this done once, with ordinary salt, and he pulled out this big book and in it was a prayer called, “For the blessing of salt.”

Also, if one uses sacramentals and does not live a holy life, then the sacramentals are useless, for the greatest demons live in our hearts.

By a holy life, I mean sincerely trying to repent of your sins on a daily basis, obeying the Ten Commandments, obeying Christ’s commandments, obeying the laws of the Church, and devoting some portion of your day to prayer (thirty seconds of prayer will do … in a pinch). A holy life is a life of charity and love, and without the intent of a holy life, sacramentals are useless.

You can’t walk around and be a Grinch and expect Sacramentals to protect you from the Devil–for when you’re a Grinch, you become an imitation of the Devil.

On the other hand, sacramentals in combination with a holy life is a dynamite way to keep demons away. Demons fear a humble soul totally devoted to God, and they also don’t like holy items.

Sometimes Demons will attempt to attack you if you are trying to be a holy person. Sacramentals help keep the nasties from attacking you directly. This is their best use.

In my own experience, these Demonic attacks come at you, most of the time, through other people. The Evil One sees he can’t get to you directly, so he enters the hearts of friends, family, and coworkers and uses them to attack you and tempt you into sin. I’ve gotten wise to some of the enemies’ tactics, so when one of my family members or friends seems to “go off their rocker” and verbally assault me for no good reason, I try to keep my reaction to a minimum. I assume their attack on me is largely driven by the Snake.

It ain’t easy, however, because the Evil One often changes form and tactics. The Devil ain’t dumb.

Sacramentals do help. They are powerful if used in faith. But most of all, I really, really try to live a holy life. I get up every day and pick up that cross! I pray to make all my daily actions a prayer and I try to make the Will of God at the center of all these actions.

I hope this helps.

God bless you, and Merry Christmas.

I don’t believe that salt is used at baptism any more. At least, I don’t recall any salt involved when my daughter was baptized several years ago.

There have been several threads on this topic recently and I even asked my parish priest about it and was told that blessed items can not be sold regardless of price – even if they are being sold at half price compared to the unblessed items.

You can make any size DONATION for a blessed item – but that donation MUST be completely voluntary [sp].

Hey thanks, great info, that really hit home with me.

I believe it was Fr. Benedict Groschel, that said that if you want to keep demons out of your home, throw away (or turn off the TV). He was not joking.

He specifically said that TV is the tabernacle of the devil and the internet is the sewer of the devil.

Judging by the websites that popped-up while I was searching the internet to prepare my RCIA class, I do belive he was right… there is a little bit of good out there (ewtn, catholic answers forums) but most of it its junk.

Good point. I also heard Fr. William Casey say that too.
