So what does it mean to keep the sabbath holy. I mean going to church is a must as we all attend obligation mass but isn’t it more than that?

I mean if we attend church and then spend the day like movie night etc and doing things that don’t honor god isn’t this a sin?

It should be a day of prayer… Does anyone have a list of Do’s and Don’ts on the Sabbath?

Thanks

We should try to keep every day holy, If we approach life like that it would be less stressfull.

Unfortunately Hollywood is spewing out mostly filth and violence this days so we need to be carefull which movie we do go and see, this can also be said of tv btw.

I always thought it is suppose to be a day of rest, peace and serenity. Going to a movie or out to diner would not be wrong. However I know a lot of people who deliberately wait until Sunday to cut the grass, do house chores and whatever else. Who knows, now Saturday is a day we can go to church instead of Sunday. It’s confusing to me too. I do remember reading in the bible that you can work in emergencies. If a terrible storm comes along and your neighhbor is trapped under debris, you can help dig him out. So in some cases hard labor is acceptable. I’m old, so this has probably all changed. LOL

From the CCC linked above:

2184 Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done, human life has a rhythm of work and rest. The institution of the Lord’s Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

I work in the airline industry and it’s 24/7, and we rotate days off every 28 days so I try to get to mass on Sunday or Saturday but sometimes I can’t. I try my best and when I go to reconciliation I tell Father that I have missed Mass.

If you read what was linked above you will find that yes it is to be a day of rest, prayer etc.

And yes I would avoid “chores” where one can…choose ones movies wisely…avoid cutting the grass etc…

Discuss your occupation with your Pastor …he even has the authority to dispense you …

he even has the authority to dispense you …

And he has, I was using this as an example when certain people really don’t have a choice but to work on the Sabbath.

I think that how you observe Sundays becomes a personal thing for you and your family so that different people may do different things.

I had a conversation with my spiritual director about this to help clarify in my own mind what I thought I should or shouldn’t do.

There were already a few things I did. For example, going to Mass is a part of my Sunday. And I generally avoided shopping on Sunday (though after our conversation I avoid it completely rather than “generally”). Similarly I don’t see Sunday as a day for work – doing laundry, washing the car, etc. can be done on Saturday.

Cooking a meal is work. Does that mean I shouldn’t invite someone to come over to eat on Sunday? What about going to a restaurant? My decision was that nurturing relationships with family and friends was a good thing for Sunday so either cooking or eating out was appropriate.

Things that are renewing and refreshing fit with Sunday so activities could be things like going to a park or an art museum or simply taking a walk.

Mostly I try to be mindful that it is Sunday and use it as a day of rest and renewal. Even something as simple as thinking about what groceries I need on Saturday so I don’t have to stop at the store helps keep Sunday as a special day in the week.

We were told in catholic school that we are too respect the sabbath, (sunday), we were not to do anything related to work, anything strenuous, etc. It is meant to be a day of rest. However in 2013, I dont see many people respecting this day for what it is intended for, or any day for that matter!

It would be nice to see all businesses closed on sunday though, even restaurants and stores. No business needs to be open every single day.

Whats really odd, I remember many saturdays and sundays, when people from the church would spend the weekend working at the church, on the church grounds, etc. I never thought anything about it, but looking back, it is strange they picked those days to do that kind of work, especially when they work at the church itself, so if anyone should know better, it is them.

So for those who are students so that means studying on the Sabbath is a sin?
