Hi everyone,

I have a couple questions about Sunday and what’s acceptable to do.

I gather that it’s ok to work at a job on Sunday if you need to. (Lucky for me I have Sundays off 😃 )

Family outtings and such are ok. That part I understand.

Mass in the morning is a given.

What about spending a reasonable amount of time playing a video game? Would this be acceptable on a sunday? I thought it might be because it’s also acceptable to go to the movies or sports games (as long as you make extra time to go to Mass first) --That’s at least, what I’ve heard.

My dad also does some work around the house sometimes on Sundays. (Some yard work and home repairs) Every once in a while. Would this be ok to do if I make time to go to Mass in the morning?

For example, next week he has a three day weekend and I’m getting hardwood flooring put in my room. He’s probably going to need my help taking out the old rug and I’m fearful that it might fall on a Sunday.

Is anything like this considered sinful? Church is very important to me on a Sunday so that’s not an issue, but what about work around the house, etc.? Is it yet another bout of scruples that I’m dealing with?

Thanks

This is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church…

“On Sunday and other other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.” (2185)

Hope this helps. God bless. 🙂

Thanks. Do you think it would it be acceptable to play video games (for about an hour or so, nothing too long) on a Sunday then? For me its a little relaxing to just play a game for a little while, but I don’t know if this isn’t good to do.

As for actual work, that’s understandable. I hope I won’t have to work on Sunday with extra house work. 😦 Is it a sin to do work around the house if we would attend Mass in the morning? Unfortunately, the Catechism doesn’t mention if it is.

Hi everyone, Please help me. My husband and i are catholics. We are trying to find out if it is ok to do some home improvement type work on sunday after mass. Thank you. He works everyday and its hard to try and find time to do some things around the house. we are also caretakers of my mom and dad.

While not a Catholic, I agree that Sunday should be a day of rest / time for the family, and all the shops should close, by all the shops I mean the big shops in city and town centres. I have to work on sundays because of the nature of my job.

I don’t think that doing things around the house would be considered wrong. A farmer works 24/7 and does not sin when taking care of his farm. So a man that works outside of the home most of the time only has so much time to care for his home and family. As long as you go to Mass and don’t turn the Lords Day into man’s day then you are ok. Now this is my humble opinion.

I also have a job that often requires me to work on Sundays. I really dislike that fact, but I deal with it. I think the important thing if you don’t have to work on Sunday (and even if you do, really) is to make it a very prayerful day. One of relaxation in the Lord. I may be wrong but I don’t see anything wrong with doing some yard work or home improvement on a Sunday. Many people find yard work and the such to be a very relaxing and even prayerful time. In fact, I’ve done lots of praying while mowing my lawn or pulling weeds.

I think the important thing is to make sure that we remain focused on God, give him our time during that day, and avoid any activity that draws our focus away from Him. And while you do some home improvement, remember to thank God that you are blessed enough to have a home !

Just my two cents! Enjoy your Sunday.

In a pastoral society, a day of rest was needed. Today we all need some rest, altho mental work seems fine, but that may be the most needed to rest from.
If that’s the only day someone has to mow the lawn or shop, fine.
Don’t we have faith that God understands us? I ironed school uniforms every Sunday evening because that was the only sit-down time I had, plus they had to be washed/dried first. We watched Ed Sullivan as a family in those long-gone days.
I insist that God understands our intentions–this is not magic where all aspects must be perfect–but faith!
Shalom y’all. Try to find a Holocaust Memorial service &
attend. You’ll be sad but also feel some catharsis.
