Keeping the Sabbath Holy

Just to break the stride of everyone discussing their differences I wanted to bring up a topic which has been heatly debated anywhere people come into contact with me.

I know this question will get tricky with certain denominations, so I guess my target audience is those who worship on Sunday.

What does it mean to you to keep holy the Sabbath (Sunday)?

Is going to church enough for you?
Do you avoid shopping?
Do you avoid eating out at restaurants?
Do you avoid going anywhere that will cause a person to be working on Sunday? (Aside from hopsitals, etc.)
 
I know people that keep the Sabbath by doing no work, by going to Church and spending the rest of the day with family or with religious pursuits ~ no shopping, no eating out, nothing that causes anyone else to “work” other than essential tasks.

I also know many others who, beyond going to church, do not do any of that.

In the Lutheran tradition, the Sabbath in its Old Testament form is no longer binding on the Christian people. The OT Sabbath was a sign pointing to the rest that we find in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Since Jesus has come as our Savior and Lord, God no longer requires us to observe any one particular day for worship (whether Saturday, Sunday, or some other day; see Col. 2:16-17; Rom. 14:5-6; Gal. 4:10-11). Scripture does, of course, stress the importance of corporate worship (Acts 2:42, 46; Heb. 10:25), and the first Christians chose Sunday as their regular day of worship because it was the day on which Jesus rose from the dead (Luke 24:1-2; Acts 20:7).

It means to set aside a day (usually sunday) to remember God and this specific commandment/law.

Well said, I agree. And in the Catholic Church, this day naturally becomes Sunday given the instruction/requirement to participate in the Eucharist each Sunday (or Saturday evening).

Technically, the Sabbath will always be Saturday - this is ordained in scripture - but the sabbath was fulfilled for us by Christ (and we satisfy this in rest in him (Hebrews)). In keeping with the pattern God established on 1 day of rest per week, the early Christians began meeting on the first day of the week and this became a day of rest/worship consistent with this pattern (but its not technically the Sabbath).

There is no obligation for a Gentile Christian to keep the OT Sabbath and there is no Christian Sabbath according to scripture on Sunday.

From “sundown to sundown” I think …right Brian ?

I recall, back in the days when I was playing music to earn my daily bread, that I did often fulfill my “Sunday obligation” by attending the Saturday evening Mass… but my reasoning/intentions weren’t always commendable. When we were touring it was okay because we travelled all day Sundays and I couldn’t attend Mass that day.

But when we were home playing in town, I developed an unhealthy habit of attending the “Sabbath Mass” Saturday evening so I wouldn’t have to get up too early on Sunday…wrong reasons:blush:

I love how people who won’t go out to eat, will accept a huge Sunday dinner from Mom or Grandma.

If a chef is working, so is Mom!

Well, that’s not religion, that’s cultural tradition.

And if I can entice my grandchild & her parents over here on Sunday by offering to cook dinner ~ I’ll do it everytime!! It’s not work, to me, if I also get to play with the baby!! 🙂

LOL…My mom used to say one of the best things about being a grandparent was that she could give the baby back when she had finished playing with it.

…Makes one pause a moment and just reflect on all that each of our dear mothers did for us…Aren’t mothers wonderful ? No wonder Jesus wanted to have one too. 🙂
 
While I believe the OT law is not binding for strict sabbath observance, God rested on the 7th day to set an example. Humans NEED rest just as we need food and at least one day should be set aside for rest and more focused worship (we should worship every day). I don’t refuse to go out (shopping restaurants etc) that day. Our culture is not one that everyone gets the same day off work, most people get a day or more off every week, it just might be a different day.

I do agree we should worship with every beat of our heart, but there should also be fellowship in worship as well. And by shopping on a Sunday we are causing someone to be unavailable to participate in said fellowship.

I agree that today’s culture has made it very hard for everyone to enjoy the same day off, but that does not mean that we cannot begin to try to change things so we all share one day in common as a day of rest. God gave us one day for a reason, and even if people are not believers, we need to give them that day as well…especially in hopes that they will come to believe.

We cannot let this idea that we each have our own sabbath and ignoring the fact that keeping holy the Sabbath is still a part of the 10 Commandments. I agree it is not meant to be observed in the strict sense of the Old Testament times, but there should be more to it than simply getting to church for an hour.

Sunday has turned into this day where people are trying to get all their errands done, etc and the time is lost to be spent in leisure with family and for God.

Again, I know today’s society makes this impossible for this to be working perfectly next Sunday. I am simply trying to get at that as Christians we need to take more seriously the Commandment to keep holy the Sabbath and that we need to practice mercy toward our neighbor by working toward a unified day where we all get to rest and hope it leads people to also use that time to come to God (if they are non-believers.)
 
Since I am in Church on Sundays myself at least 3-4 hours, I don’t believe that my short shopping trip actually prevents others from worshiping. When it comes down to it, those who want to worship and rest on Sunday will do so. In OT Scripture Sabbath day was Saturday as set aside as rest not particularly for worship. We are to worship everyday. In NT it mentioned freedom in Christ and also mentions Worship meetings on the first day of the week, Sunday.

I have worked at Wal-mart, nursing homes as well as a few restaurants and other 24/7 open establishments… I was always able to get the day off work. Its a simple matter of making it clear in interviews that you are simply not available on Sundays. We cannot hold non-believers to a day of rest, it is a freedom given to us by God as a gift, not a restriction.

Romans 14:5 says, “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.”
Colossians 2:16-17 16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Good Point! Jesus said, who wont untie there animals to feed on the sabbath. He said this because he was accused of breaking the sabbath when he did a good work. A mother has a unique job of not only working but caring for her family, is this not also a good work. I priest could also be accussed because his whole purpose is to work on Sunday’s? So there… Just sticking up for my Grandma!:getholy:

Yup, this makes sense in seeing that Jesus told us to go out into the world and spread the good news. The knowledge that death itself cannot seperate us from the love of Christ is what makes this true. I also think it is good to set a day aside for rest and prayer, and sharing the good news in our actions and words. I like that you requested Sundays off in your interviews, that is very bold. Since I am young most part-time jobs have required me to work at least every other weekend, so I never attempted to request Sunday’s off, knowing that there were 3 masses that I could choose from, though it did get me angry when I was scheduled Saturday night, Sunday morning, but then I just found a church that had mass during the week.:knight1:
