Since the Church unambiguously encourages vocal, mental and contemplative prayer, one should not be afraid to use any of them.’

But can he see our sins? Tim
Yes, Satan can see our sins, either because we act them out, or because he tempts us with impure thoughts.
Can I safely assume that God will defend this person from the devil’s attacks and that I won’t make matters worse by praying for a person?
No prayer ever makes things worse, because everything that happens is for our good (even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time).
Since the devil can’t read our thoughts, it surely must make some difference whether we pray vocally or mentally. My thinking is that vocal prayer gives satan an advantage that he otherwise wouldn’t have.
I would like to echo a previous poster, and encourage you to be bold. Jump headfirst into God’s pool-o-trust, and pray to your heart’s content. (I wouldn’t, however, recommend laughing at Satan. As I recall, even exorcists are instructed not to engage the demons).

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

this may seem like a strange or silly question but I have a habit
of concealing my intentions/thoughts from the enemy. e.g. if I’m praying a novena, when it comes to the intentions bit, I only say the intention in my mind and never say it out loud. If feel that the enemy could use this information to work against my intentions and make matters worse.

Am I being silly and should I trust that God will prevent the enemy from destroying my efforts?

Any thoughts?

God bless,
Noel.

Hi, My thoughts are that no, you are not silly for the devil is real, and a spirit that has influence on our every thought, and also I would never tempt him. By saying that would never happen to me or the devil would never get to my children, or the devil will never bother me because that is a challenge he would take on just to destroy ones faith, but only our pride would be responsible. You are not silly, on the contrary you are very wise. Momma of 12

We have to remember, though, that God is infinite and the Devil, being a created being, is finite. Therefore, as powerful a being as the Devil is, he could never stand up to God.

I don’t challenge Satan, I just don’t worry too much about him. If I feel like I’m under attack, I pray to St. Michael the Archangel.

God has given us the saints and angels for protection.

Either people believe Jesus is who He says He is or they don’t. If people believe Jesus is God then they have nothing to fear from anything or anyone.

I am astounded how many people are worried about what satan is up to, what he can and cannot do etc. I can’t understand why people are even interested in him, worry about him, fear him and give him any thought space; really this is what he likes to happen!

People do not know why God might let a trial continue when they have offered an intention to God, but sometimes He does and He does it for good purpose, that doesn’t mean God has let satan run amock.

Please don’t give satan too much credit. God is greater than satan and any sin, His grace abounding all the more where there is sin.

Pray outloud boldly and without fear. Hiding prayer is only a few steps away from stopping praying because once the fear sets in and satan gets a foothold he will not drop it there, he will persue it to it’s ultimate end and his ultimate desire is to destroy the loving relationship between God and His Children.

Inasmuch as laughing at satan, I assure you he laughs every time a soul fears him, he laughs all the more when a soul allows him to inject a barrier between God and His Children, he laughs wholeheartedly when a soul is mortally seperated from God. Laugh at him, he is nothing though he thinks he is everything, he believes himself exhalted and believes he can do anything with men. He only knows rage when he can do nothing to a soul because that soul is unafraid of him and trusts completely in God. Laughing at satan is not conversing with him, it is the ultimate act of fearlessness.

Get on with the work of praying and banish all thought of satan from your minds. If half of the energy expended on considering satan and considering sin was used on considering God and His Love, Mercy, Might and Power and considering the virtues the mind and heart would be less of a battle ground and men would have more trust in their Father.

Reside in Christ and there is nothing to fear.

In my prayers

Thanks BlessedStar, point taken 😉 😉
😃 Well it is true, just as every time we smile or laugh when an injustice happens to us or smile and embrace the cross by this we trust in Jesus and we laugh in the face of satan. This way we protect our souls and evil has not touched the love of those who love Jesus nor love for each other as we remember that our battle is with evil spirits and so we bear patiently with each other.

Love knows no fear.

I totally agree with this! Also when we pray, we are praising and showing our faith in God, the devil hates that! The devil hates prayer, prayer brings God right to us, do you really think the evil one can stand to be in His presence? I think it’s like giving in to the devils terrorism to think we must pray silently. I also tell people all the time that I’ll pray for whatever problem they are telling me, that in itself is a prayer because it’s declaring your faith. Invite your guardian angel to pray with you, especially if you feel unsure. Read Maria Vadias book “There’s power in your tongue” published by Queenship press.
I also agree with what Blessedstar has to say, we should “Trust in Jesus”!!!

I suggest a read of the following book if people really want to know how the Holy Spirit and the Human Soul interact together. It contains profound insights.

About The Holy Spirit
by Francisca Javiera del Valle

First published in Spanish in 1932, this 10-day devotion to the Holy Spirit has attracted many readers to a deeper appreciation and veneration of the “Great Unknown”. The author was a poor dressmaker who, in spite of her very limited education, testified to an extraordinary understanding of the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit through her habitual and silent practice of heroic virtue.

One admirer wrote that this work leads even the most learned theologian to acknowledge the healthy and profound doctrine expounded. Yet it becomes clear from reading that the book is not written by a theologian but by a soul who has first-hand experience in the school of the Divine Spirit.

I am agreed with Eliza.

Another think I would like to add is that when we pray, we must have faith in God and must be patient. You faith in Him will help you overcome the worry. Your prayer might not get answered right away. It might take 10 years 15 years or 20 years. Just be patient.

At my parish’s praise and worship group, one lady converted to Catholic after her friend praying for her exactly 7 years.
👍 Good point to remember! We can never remind ourselves too much that God`s time is not our time, I often have to remember this when I feel my prayers are not being answered.

Finally, one night, when she had reached a point of exhaustion, she went into her kitchen, saw the dishes flying, the noodles crawling, etc. She just looked at the mess, and said, “OK, Satan, do what you want, just clean up my kitchen when you’re done.” and off she went to bed.
The spirit, or whatever it was, left and never bothered her again.
She defeated Satan by letting him know that she wasn’t afraid of him.
Great Story! Maybe a tad out of normal for most of us. I learned a bit of wisdom regarding fear of bees and wasps. I do my own maintenance, and it seemed that whenever I wanted to do some work outdoors, the greatest threat was their “hovering” … apparently to intimidate me from entering their hallowed territory. They almost always came in pairs or more, and I used to be afraid they would bite. So I would put off doing the work out of fear and escaped indoors.

The beauty of it was that the more I entered their nested area, and the more they hovered, the less fear I had. I learned that if you ignore their buzzing and threatening presence, they cannot harm you.

This principle can be applied in the spiritual realm also, for our enemies rarely come alone, but always bring reinforcements. Did you notice how Jesus’s enemies “hovered” around Him, seldom coming alone, and relentlessly looked for an opportunity to “bite?” Yet it was not His hour, and they had no power over Him.

I have felt this way many times and would have taken it
to my grave if you had not spoke first. If I pray for something
really important sometimes I just come down with a feeling
that “the lousy guy” is listening and ready to pounce. I
say certain things in silence at those times and I know he
can’t hear but God does. Is it God signalling us to be quiet
here, or is it the devil trying to hold us in fear and rob our
trust? Most here seem to think it’s the second one, but
I still believe it’s the first or I wouldn’t do it.

Spoken words have power. When God created the world, He spoke them into existence. As God’s children, we are given the power of spoken words. Power of life and death is under the tongue.

Jesus told us to “speak to the mountain” and it will be moved to the sea (Matthew 21:21). So, never be afraid to speak out loud of our prayer request. I believe with the creative power of spoken words, speak out loud actually will help, not hurt. Especially we send our petition in Jesus’ name.

“That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”(Php 2:10) When we pray in Jesus’ name, the devil will flee, what are we afraid of?

We also pray the rosary – the most powerful prayer. The devil is under Mary’s feet. With the protection of Jesus and our Holy mother, what are we afraid of?

Franklin Roosevelt told American people that “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”
Don’t allow fear to create the negative power.

I really like the verses and the Rosary that you are using to support your thinking.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, and you did so in a beautiful way!

Carrie:

Thanks for your encouragement.

"For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ " Romans 8:15

We can get rid of our fear while remembering God Almighty is our Father.

God bless!

Just want to throw in one more comment.

When I’m praying with an intention, I generally don’t say the intention out loud, I pray silently while I’m saying the prayers out loud.

It helps me keep my mind focussed on my prayer- I have issues with an unruly cerebral cortex, and having two separate layers of prayer going at the same time helps keep it under control.

There’s nothing wrong with keeping your intentions silent, I just don’t think you should be doing it out of fear.
