Anyone watching this? I saw the first episode last night. The interview portions were mostly musicians being interviewed which I hope continues for the whole series. I prefer their insights to non musician historians. The definite first episode highlights were The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. For such a short life and battling illness for much of it Rodgers accomplished so much.

That’s great. I never had the chance to see them in concert. They were great when I saw them on TV.

I couldn’t see it last night but will as soon as I can. I’m a big fan of Ken Burns’ work. Although not a hard core country music person, I also love the Grand Ole’ Opry and have seen many stars there over the years.

I watched part of it. I think they said that the Grand Ol Opry started out as a real opera house when the rich and influential in Nashville wanted to show everyone they were Little Vienna or something like that. Then, country music came a callin’ and the rest is history. 😀

Ken Burns is a master at these documentaries.
I enjoyed the series he had on baseball, the civil war, prohibition and the Viet Nam war.

Agreed - Ken Burns has unique talent.
It’s a shame he wasted it on ‘Country Music’, an oxymoron if ever there was one…

Yes it’s always the same formula but why change it when it works so well. The Civil War and Baseball were my two favorites by him. The current Country Music one will most likely be right behind these two. I can’t see it topping those two for me.

I am not a huge fan of Country Music, so I doubt I will watch it. But knowing the quality of Burns’ work, I am sure it will be well done.
I agree with you, Baseball and the Civic War are two of my favorites.

I watched it and it was great! I liked how he showed origins of the instruments and how the music evolved. I didn’t know Jimmie Rogers had TB and such a short life. You can see where Hank Sr. got his influence. Masterful job.

I actually am a fan of country music, but not of Ken Burns, so I don’t know if I’ll see it.

This documentary stops in the 1990s. Anything after that I wouldn’t be interested in anyway. I’ll probably lose interest with most of the documentaty in the coverage of late 1970s or 1980s. But will keep watching because even then the old timers will mentioned.

Did anyone see Johnny Cash when he guest starred on an episode of Columbo?
He was great. He totally enjoyed playing the “bad” guy.

Yes I saw it many times. Columbo is my all time favorite TV show. There is a brief scene of a real Johnny Cash concert. I like how Cash’s character, Tommy, calls Columbo “little buddy.” I liked the ending after he was arrested when he and Columbo are sitting in the car and Tommy says he is relieved it’s over because his conscience is killing him. Then one of his songs comes on the radio and Columbo says to him “Any man who can sing like that can’t be all bad.”

Historians are no so much hung up on the subject. They are more about the project itself. I am not a country music fan, but I know there are many in this country.
