Hi how we’re the Kennedys democrat if they where catholic ? Because they agree with abortion , same sex marriage , stem cells resarch etc , and the church doesn’t do what was going on would they be in the same party today ?

Thanks Charlie

Becuase do the two really match up ? How can you be catholic and democrat if the church believes the total opposite if you see what I mean ?

They could always be a democrat for Life.

There is no political party that has all it’s platform in line with God’s teachings or with the Church’s teachings. In many things of life, we are to use prudent judgement on how to accomplish Christian goals.

That is why you must look, not just at party, but a the person being elected. If we can get enough pro-life democrats AND republicans in Congress perhaps there would be a more charitable approach to govt.

who is “they” in this sentence, the kennedys or the democratic party?

Which Kennedys are you speaking of when you say they agree with these things? Please be specific.

How were the majority of Catholics democrat back then? Because the democratic party platform was more in line with Church teaching. They have shifted way to the left and now are against it. But the Catholics in America have strong ties to it from way back when, because of unions and stuff. Gay “marriage”, euthanasia, abortion, etc. weren’t big issues back then. Those are modern, and the Democratic party has sadly sided in favor of them, resulting in a party that is less in line with Church teaching, which means less Catholics voting for Democrats.

Church teaching doesn’t apply to one specific political party, at all.

My dad (who is Lutheran, but has strong respect of the Catholic Church) says the following:

Democrats hate Catholics because of their issue on abortion and homosexual marriage.
Republicans hate Catholics because of their issue with illegal immigration and economic reform.

Personally, I’m registered Republican, and in the eyes of the government I’m Republican. However, I agree with Democratic policies of immigration, and a couple other things pertaining to humane treatment of individuals (capital punishment, for example).

Basically, we’re all over the place in the political spectrum. 😃

Peace.

Kennedy was a president in a different time. I seriously doubt that a Catholic Democrat would get elected to the presidency nowadays.

Hi thanks for your responses , I was referring to they as the Kennedys u know JFK and family , I suppose it was difftent times but why was abortion ,gay marriage , pro life etc not an issue then ? So who should Catholics support ? I know Ethel Kennedy is a democrat but also a supporter of prolife but it’s still hard to be both right ?

A. It was before the gay rights movement kicked into high gear, gay marriage has really only been pushed for relatively recently. It was also before Roe v Wade, so abortion was not a huge issue in which politicians had to take a stance on. B. Yes it is hard to be Catholic and Democrat as their social stances are contrary to Catholic teaching. It is also hard to be Catholic and Republican because their economic stances are not totally in line with Catholic teaching. As far as who Catholics vote for in the U.S. It is an issue of having an informed and properly molded conscience, a pro-choice candidate should not be voted for, however as this is an intrinsic evil and a grave moral sin that cannot be supported in any way. Of course there are many Catholic pro-choicers who expressly disobey the teachings of the Church, but that’s another story.

I see that you are from the UK. In the US, when JFK became President in 1960, abortion was not yet legal. Methods of birth control available today did not exist yet. The “Pill” was not available. The social structure was not very accepting of gay people at all and gay marriage was not contemplated.
Huge changes took place as the '60s and '70s passed. Civil rights, equality for women, drugs, Vietnam…so many things brought so many changes over time. TV had about 3 channels in the JFK days and those didn’t broadcast 24 hours a day either.
Politics has never been squeaky clean but it didn’t used to be as divisive as now. The two parties were rivals but could compromise and actually work together. Neither party was regarded as all good or all bad. The times indeed are so different between now and then as to make it difficult to give a simple answer to your question. I was 11 when JFK was killed and am amazed at how the US and the entire world have changed and continue to change.

Hi all thanks for your great responses , I am beginning to see how differnt it was in those days and the laws etc thanks for helping me with m answer !

If you want some interesting reading:

“A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat” by Zell Miller

He was the Democrat (Senator, Governor, ex-Marine, etc.) that spoke at a Republican convention a few years back. Basically, he was a Democrat all is life, and the party has gone so far left that it bears no resemblance to the Democratic party that he joined.

Abortion and sodomy were unlawful in most of America in the '50s when JFK ran for office. So-called Gay Marriage was completely unthinkable in those days.
Almost all Democrats loved their Country just as much as almost all Republicans did.
I did not leave the Democratic Party, but the Democratic Party sure as heck left me.

While I voted for Kennedy, I later discovered details as to how he was a notorious womanizer. I also read somewhere - words of Jacqueline, perhaps? - that he really wasn’t a believing Catholic. The Kennedy men, including the father, were noted for their wild womanizing. Sad, because they also were so good on some very important issues.
Code:
On the other hand, I don't believe I could have voted for Nixon, his opponent in 1960, even had I known then what I know now. Maybe I would have stayed home or voted some third party.

At the present time I have serious trouble with Obama, but there isn't a Republican candidate running (so far) who impresses me all that much. I certainly would never vote for Gingrich, a man who left two wives to marry a third and then pretend to be such a good Catholic!

But, it's early. I'll watch how the campaign develops.

I don’t much care for what I have read about Gingrich’s personal life, but I question the motives of all who trash politicians because of their personal behavior, while ignoring their policies and professional records.
I will vote for the lesser of evils, if I must, but I will vote.

It’s possible - a conservative democrat who was Catholic could. Because fiscal policy is more important to the Democratic party than social issues. Same with Republican, although not as much as Democrat imo.

Up until the '50’s, most mainstream politicians would be considered “social conservatives” by today’s standards. As such, the parties used to line up more along economic, rather than social, lines. For example, Al Smith, a respected Catholic Democrat from New York, and Theodore Bilbo, a vile, racist, corrupt, KKK member, who was a Democrat from Mississippi both considered themselves “Democrats” because they supported the Democratic Party’s economic programs.

to the OP: Be very careful about believing stereotypes about the two main political parties in the U.S.A.

E.g., a lot of people will tell you that the Democrats are for the “common man,” while the Republicans are “for the wealthy.”

This is false.

Another false stereotype is that the Democrats are for civil rights for minorities, while Republicans are for less right for minorities and more privileges for white people.

This is false.

When you hear the polarizing language, don’t trust it.

I would suggest looking at the Official Party Platforms of the U.S. political parties. It’s hard to get a fix on the Platforms because there are so many bloggers online who post commentaries on the Party Platforms. Here is a link to the New Hampshire Republican Party Platform, which is, as far as I can see, representative of many other states in the U.S.: nhgop.org/pages/detail/96

You can see in the Platform the support for prolife issues, and the opposition to abortion.

Here is a link to the Democratic Party Platform (2008): s3.amazonaws.com/apache.3cdn.net/8a738445026d1d5f0f_bcm6b5l7a.pdf

Note page 50 and the support for Roe vs Wade and the objection to any impediments to a “woman’s right to choose,” (code words for “abortion on demand”).

The biggest difference in the Party Platforms is the role of federal government. In a nutshell, the Republican Party supports a minimal role of federal government and more involvement by state and local governments, as spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. The Democrat Party supports a larger role for federal involvement.

The concern that many of us have is that paying (taxes) for Democrat Party federal government programs is very expensive. If we were just paying to “help the poor,” that would be fine. But the problem is that we are paying for a huge bureaucracy to “help the poor,” and so by the time our dollar bill gets to the poor, the actual poor person only gets a few cents, while most of our dollar goes to pay the salaries of the receptionists, secretaries, accountants, IS people, managers, etc., as well as the buildings that house all these people who administer the programs that “help the poor.”

I would rather just give money to my local charities, many of which are run by volunteers working under just a few paid staff people, and that way, more of my dollar bill actually helps the poor. My church is one of the organizations that helps the poor, and there is very little overhead. OR–I could just give my money or other goods directly to a poor person or family in need of help–that’s best, because then “the poor” is not just a “label,” but an actual person or family that I know and am friends with.

Someone above made a comment about Republican fiscal policies not being in line with Catholic belief. I would challenge that. The Republicans are not saying that we should ditch the poor and ignore their needs. They just want to keep the “helpline” as local as possible, rather than shipping off tax monies to the federal government and supporting a vast bureaucracy that manages to get very little money to the poor and needy. IMO, that’s pretty Catholic–me, myself, and I helping the poor rather than expecting the government to do it.

I hope this helps you to see the difference.

Well said and actually on topic since it was generally Kennedy ideas that LBJ championed into the “Great Society” federal anti-poverty initiatives. But I actually think you missed the worst deficiency in the federal level program criticism you made (pennies on the dollar going to the recipient).

Real christian charity works on THREE levels:
  1. The poor meet Christ in the giver.
  2. The giver meets Christ in the poor.
  3. The physical needs of the poor get met.
Federal poverty measures cannot by law be designed with #1 or #2 above in mind. Without those, the third actually accomplishes very little in the long run.
