At the present time, I would consider “The Night Goes On” to be my favorite Kenny Rogers song even though I have no knowledge of it being officially released as a single. However, can a CAF member besides yours truly attempt to interpret the meaning of the song? To listen to it, check out this YouTube video.

My parents are actually friends of his! I’ve never met him, but apparently he’s a very sweet dude. He lives in Aptos, California.

No, I don’t.
But, as an aside, I was watching the Australian Tennis Open last week and in walks Kenny Rogers.
The organisers then play The Gambler in the stadium and he starts to mime and the crowd starts to sing.
All very spontaneous.
And nice.

I haven’t heard the song before, but since you asked, I gave it a listen and attempted to get the lyrics from the usual online resources (Google, metrolyrics.com, azlyrics.com).

First of all, I think the lyrics posted online are erroneous. I mean, they do not have the words which are actually sung. This could happen if the songwriter did not publish the lyrics and others transcribed them without hearing or making sense of the lines.

In the first verse, the lyrics available online read:
You and me walking on the land
But we can lose a stare from time in time

but what I’m hearing is this:
You and me are walking on the line
But we can lose our step from time to time

In the second verse, the lyrics online read:
How long will it take until we know
If we should pray and say I’ll let it go

but I hear it as
How long will it take until we know
If we should play it safe or let it go

In the line which follows, the online lyrics have this:
Cause I feel the danger that maybe we should try to take it slow
I am not hearing the word “that.” The word is not clear, but my best guess is:
Cause I feel the danger, well maybe we should try to take it slow
In the bridge, the posted lyrics are:
Were alright where we belong
And nobody can say where we were wrong

but I am hearing:
We are right where we belong
And nobody can say that we were wrong

As the song fades out, a line is repeated, which the online lyrics render as:
And the night goes on
but I am hearing something different, definitely not “goes on.” It is not perfectly clear, but my best guess is:
And the night burns strong

The meaning of the song (my interpretation):
A lover is filled with desire. He is impatient, but he is also hesitant. Perhaps he is feeling a conflict between his desire and his morals. The song describes his feelings. He is speaking to his lover, but it is not clear whether he is speaking directly to her, or envisioning her as he thinks it over to himself. He is not pleading or pressuring her to give in. He wants to be strong. He does not want to harm his lover or their relationship by acting too soon on his passions.

What’s your interpretation?
