Protestants don’t accept the Catholic view of Peter as the Rock, but what is their interpetation of Jesus giving the “keys of the kingdom” to Peter?

You’re another Chestertonian, I see. 👍

When I was in the Assemblies of God they interpreted this passage to mean that all believers have been given the keys of the kingdom. They saw it as a part of the “priesthood of all believers” teaching that for them excludes the ministerial priesthood.

I have had a conversation with one non-denom who seems to believe that Jesus took the keys back. . .Rev. 3:7. This line of thought seems to be that it may seem like Jesus gave them to Peter in Matt. 16, but obviously they didn’t remain there as we see in Rev. that they are clearly in Jesus’ hands.

I had never heard that arguement before, myself. I suppose one will do whatever it takes to make sure that they are not in Peter’s hands. 😉

For my part, I never assumed that when Jesus gave Peter the keys that he gave him his only set. 😃

Was the AOG belief accepted on it’s own merit, or was it accepted as a contrast to Catholic belief?

I’ve never heard that either. Did your friend know Jesus’ reason for taking the keys back?

He caught Peter out late drinking. :tsktsk:

Hi, Mark! Nope. . .His arguement was quite straightforward. He said basically that although ‘some’ think that Jesus gave Peter the keys, they are obviously no longer in his possession as Revelation shows us that the keys are in Jesus’ hand.

The arguement seemed weak to me from the beginning. No one who knows the OT roots of the keys (Is. 22:22) would assume that when the king gives the keys to his cheif minister that he is abdicating his own power. This arguement objecting to Peter’s possession of the keys seems to be just that–an arguement.

Several quotes from Protestant scholars regarding the “keys” can be found here:
