i’ve heard a lot of reference to isaiah 22:22
( I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.)
when the passage matthew 16:19
(I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.")comes up.
but the thing that bugs me is isaiah 22:24-25
24 All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots—all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars.

25 “In that day,” declares the LORD Almighty, “the peg driven into the firm place will give way; it will be sheared off and will fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut down.” The LORD has spoken
any thoughts?

If Eliakim should anger God, he and his family (compared here to dishes, bowls and jugs) will suffer disaster.

Remember that Eliakim was being given the keys because Shebna had angered God, and the keys were taken away from him. The point of Matthew and the keys is not that they will be given and taken away if you anger God, but that the keys are a symbol of authority.
 
i get the authority thing. but it’s this peg driven in by God himself that seems so firm is pulled out by God and all come tumbling after. it almost seems prophetic. i should have also quoted verse 23.
22 And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder: and he shall open, and none shall shut: and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father. 24 And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father’s house, divers kinds of vessels, every little vessel, from the vessels of cups even to every instrument of music. 25 In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the peg be removed, that was fastened in the sure place: and it shall be broken and shall fall: and that which hung thereon, shall perish, because the Lord hath spoken it.

if the papacy is this sure peg will he be removed someday? are we the things hung on it? that is scary!
 
Isaiah is a great verse to cross reference Peter’s keys and Eliakim’s keys, but only to show that with the keys comes authority. The story of Eliakim is a real story, it happened and was recorded, and it just so happens to be a parallel with Peter. But, only as far as the authority given by the keys, there is no reference in Matthew to a Petrine failure like Eliakim’s.

If you would like to think of it differently… Just like Christ is the New Adam perfected and Mary is the New Eve perfected, would you expect Peter to not be a greater fulfillment of Eliakim?

That’s how I like to think of it. Remember Christ says he will not leave us orphans, we believe he left us the Church, he will not let it be sheared from it’s sure spot like Eliakim.

Isaias is specific. The peg that was removed was Eliacim.
