Kids and Guardian Angels

What do you teach your young children about guardian angels?

My kids have a lot of nightmares lately. Is asking their Guardian Angel to protect them from nightmares a typical practice? The 3 year old usually asks Mary. That’s her thing and I won’t tell her to swap intercessors or anything. I love that she loves Our Lady. I found her hiding in a closet with one of our Mary statues “on an adventure hiding from sharks.”

I don’t know a lot about guardian angels. My kids know they have one and say or sing the guardian angel prayer. They obsessively watch “Angel in the Waters” on FORMED and then interrogate our baby about hers. She is pretty tight lipped on the subject.

My mom taught me to pray to God in all three of his persons, to Mary, and to my Guardian Angel before I was 4 or 5. Many kids in my day learned the Angel of God prayer, as did I. Last year I resumed saying it and feel much better as I had ignored my angel for so many years. Angels were usually presented to me as God’s helpers. Santa had elves, God had angels.

I would also encourage you to get them indestructible rosaries to sleep with. I feel very comforted at night when mine is in my hand or on my bedside table.
 
I had a copy of that picture on the pillow that Seagull posted. It brought me comfort, thinking of my angel protecting me. Perhaps your daughter would like it as well.

In addition to prayer, my mom made me a fairy wand. It had a wood dowel handle and a simple pink glittered star on top. But she told me it was magic and if I got scared I could wave my wand and any monsters would go away. It actually helped a lot.

She also taught me to sing songs about Jesus out loud if I got scared. Saying the name of Jesus aloud would make anything scary run away.

It’s so sweet to hear how she loves Our Blessed Mother so much already. ❤️
 
I bought these as holy cards and stuck them on my kids’ bedposts. They love them. We also bless them with holy water and if they want sprinkle their pillows before they go to sleep. 🙂
 
I encourage my kids to pray the Angel of God prayer when they are scared. I also encourage them to pray to St Michael and have a picture of a statue of him and the Saint Michael prayer on the wall in their room. There’s also the Guardian Angel picture from above in their room.
