Kids in Mass are distracting!

There are soo many kids in Mass that really distract me.

Like the 3 yo I’ve sat in front of who sits so nicely in his dad’s lap.

Or that other kid who is 3rd grade or so and knows all the responses and prayers and uses the missal to sing all the songs.

Or the little kids who try and make the sign on the cross and it ends up being just waving their hands across various parts of their body.

Or the little girl who was helping her younger brother make the sign of the cross correctly.

Or all those school kids who occasionally come to daily mass and are so well behaved

Or the baby that sometimes comes to daily mass and occasionally makes cute baby noises.

Or the kid in my RCIA class whose dad was helping him know what to do.

Or any of the kids kneeling in front of Jesus.

All these kids are just way too distracting! I think we need a “no cute children section!”

In my [liberal] home parish, from which I am detaching myself more and more, there are to be found very few children, and certainly no babies.

At the parish where I serve in a TLM every Sunday, there are babies making their noises almost on a regular basis. I, for one, whole-heartedly welcome it.

Isn’t it delightful!?

I teach at an all-boys Catholic high school. It is such an AMAZING sight to see 520 navy blue blazers kneeling in chapel! AND…to hear 520 boys between the ages of 13-18 singing at Mass is enough to bring tears to your eyes (in a good way!)! 👍
 
when I get into a church, usually while travelling, where there are no babies doing what babies do, I check the sign out front to make sure it really is a Catholic Church.
 
It’s so nice to see this thread! I was really wondering with your thread title and was pleasantly surprised to see such a positive view! Thank you!!! Yes, kids are wonderful…a Mass without children is a Mass revealing a very bleak future…granted, we as parents need to help our children learn every aspect of Mass. But to not attend because of a possible “distraction” is just plain ridiculous!

Bring on the distractions! I want to be able to thank God that the cute baby in front of me and his/her parents are there today! Children are such a blessing…👍 :clapping:
 
The saddest thing for me is to be at Mass and there be no children distracting the adults nearby. 😉 In our church it is the elderly that tend to use the “cry room” they tell me it is warmer.😃 The noise of babies and movement of children tell me it is growing parish and not a dieing one.

I’m really grateful for my parish, we have tons of kids and as far as I can tell, they really are welcomed in Mass. We have a cry room, but there are still plenty of kids in the main body of the church. Even at the more “traditional” masses that aren’t as kid friendly as the more “contemporary” ones have kids. There are even a baby or two and a couple of older kids who I assume are home schooled that often come to daily mass. 👍

You may want to check the sign to see if it says “catholic community” …to me that is a bg red flag right there.

Chances are if it says Catholic Community then its liberal and chidren will be fewer…and families will be smaller…for the obvious reason.
 
Darn those kids. I had one of the little monsters in front of me this morning. Between 3 and 4, she was gracefully “directing” the music with wide sweeps of her arms and would end with her palms together as she bowed her head in prayer.

I could not keep my eyes (which admittedly were sometimes a little blurry with tears at her beauty and innocence) off her . . . 😉

I totally agree Church would be so sad if the ones that Jesus loved so much were not allowed to be with us to celebrate his Mass.

I heard a small boy in church today saying “Lord hear our prayer” with everyone and of course he was a little louder than the more sober and half asleep adults around him (my husband included)😃 and I was just overwhelmingly reminded of the child we are called to be in our prayers. Full of confidence that of course our Father will grant us our prayers if we only have the faith of that small child.
 
Aah… I love the little ones.

We have young friends who have a growing family. I think they’re up to 4 babies, but I’m not sure!

They sit towards the front, and one or the other parents is frequently “processing” with one of the littles to the back of the church. (We don’t have a cry room, but the back stairs are used this way.)

And their kids are learning reverence, and proper behavior at Mass.

God, bless them all! The children and all the parents in the world…

Having been a child once (mumbleumph) years ago, when one was naturally part of a community, so much so that we didn’t have to ‘label ourselves’ as such, and learning my faith as part of that community, with clear-cut expectations of behavior, consequences for transgressions, and above all, forgiveness and ‘forgeting’ when one had ‘paid’ for transgressing. . .I find this thread inspiring.

Instead of the artificially making everything ‘tailored’ for the child and ‘keeping it there’ and expecting adults to ‘accommodate to the child’ instead of vice versa. . .

Instead of too rigid ‘banish to the cry room’ or too loose ‘let the children around the altar, let them cry and scream and misbehave with no consequences’. . .

how refreshing to see people recognize children as being ‘children’. . .necessary ‘parts’ for a ‘whole’ church. . .and that as adults we are to have the privilege of helping guide those children to adult faith. . .and the joy of watching and learning from them along the way ourselves.
 
There is another time kids were distracting, not so much now, but last year before I was Catholic. Watching all those little kids, way younger than me walking up to receive communion. It wasn’t fair, I wanted to receive! 😉 😃
 
We are part of a small home school group of Catholics. We have around ten families that gather on a regular basis. That means 20 to 30 adults (some of us are grand parents LOL) at one time. What people look in awe (sometimes disgust) at is the 70 to 80 babies, children and young people that are with us. 😃 I told one of our CCD leaders that we might all be at a vigil Mass when the gathering was at our place and the horror on her face was enough to make me LOL. Then she said “can you control that many children at Mass?” Well needless to say we went to a more traditional parish. A very small Catholic Byzantine Church in the next town.

And RC’s want to know why their parishes are closing/ Go figure.
