I recently heard from a friend going to Bible school in Norway that King David knew that Jesus was his Savior and that’s why he only had to confess his sin of adultery in order to be right with God, instead of paying the traditional punishment - death. I have never heard this, even from my own Evangelical days, and can’t find Catholic discussion on it so I’m asking here: Protestants who are familar with this, please speak up and let me know what the teaching is… And Catholics, I’d love to know your thoughts from a Catholic perspective. Hello hmmm Jesus gives us this answer in Mark 12:35-40 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David? 36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’i
37David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
The large crowd listened to him with delight.
Salvation has always been the same from Adam to now. It was looking forward to the coming Perfect sacrifice, the Lamb without spot or blemish and us looking back to the finished work of Christ on the cross. The OT is clear that the blood sacrifices were only temporal and had to be offered continually but Jesus’ one time offering is sufficient for ever.
Heb 10:8-14 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them” (although the law required them to be made). 9Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
