King James Bible question

Forgive me if this is a derailling question, but I thought protestants and catholics considered only Jesus their King. Why would a christian want a bible titled “King James Version” to begin with?

It’s called The Authorized Version in the UK.

I did not mean to sound sarcastic, I was simply wondering about objections to the title on the actual bible. Perhaps my being an American has a bit to do with the objection

The title page on the KJV/Authorized version says:

The Holy Bible
Containing the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha.
Translated ouf the Orginal Tongues: and with the former Translations
diligently compared and revised by His Majesty’s spcial command

Um, why would having the Apocrypha in it be bad? Isn’t it listed in their index as Apocrypha? Or are you talking about the Deutoro’s?

What are you talking about?

Protestant Bibles in modern times have 66 books total. Most of them do not recognize the others as being official scripture. (OT: Tobit, Maccabees, Wisdom, etc.)

No, he’s a Reformed Baptist (ie. Calvinist Evangelical) who’s probably one of the most anti-Catholic individuals I’ve ever listened to. Which is unfortunate, because I’ve listened to his apologetics against Muslims, atheists, Mormons, etc, and he’s a brilliant apologist in that regard. It just seems like when he attacks Catholicism he puts on a different hat and becomes a different person entirely.

But I also have a copy of The King James Only Controversy, I’ve read it cover to cover, and I can recommend it as well.

Did we ever figure out if the KJB was banned? BZ, if I may be so bold to shorten your name, did you ever challenge this person to give evidence that it was in fact, ever banned?

Utilizing google and searching all the likely places, I have not come across anything indicating that the KJV was ever on the Church’s list of forbidden books. If it were, I’m sure there would be no shortage of google hits on the subject.

I think you have him confused with James II. James I (a/k/a James VI of Scotland), the one who commissioned the "Authorized Version, as it is known in Britain, was very much Protestant, and brutally oppressed Catholics who were loyal to the Pope.

yeah maybe I am a bit confused, but I am sure James was a Catholic.

I’m Scottish and my last Queen was Catholic.

and so was her son James.

but I only watched the movie and a documentary.

It’s sad they didn’t teach Scottish history in school, only English history.

then Protestant KJV…?

James II was Catholic (he was deposed by the Protestant William of Orange), and I believe the Stuarts after him in exile were also Catholic, but James I, at least by the time he became King, was not. Actually, there is a whole Wikipedia article on James I and religion: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_I_of_England_and_religious_issues He was a little more tolerant of Catholics than Elizabeth I, to start out with, in part due to political and diplomatic manoeuvrings with Catholic Spain, but after the Gunpowder Plot, he began to crack down. When things cooled off a bit, at best, he would tolerate Catholics who kept quiet about it and kept their faith “in the closet,” but he was not a Catholic King by a longshot.

Back on topic - the KJV, and pretty much all of the other Protestant Bibles, use the same Canon. Whereas the Catholics use the Greek Canon, including the Deuterocanonical Books. I believe the Orthodox use those, plus, I believe, a couple of more books. So, I suppose, the “next best thing” would be the Orthodox Canon.

I love talking about canon!

I was amazed a when I discovered there were different Canons, even Apostolic Canons.

It shows The Holy Spirit is in there Church too! St.Ambrose told St.Monica to observe local customs of the local Church, I guess this is what The Lord The Holy Spirit does

gives to those who ask, and then they have a larger Canon.

I don’t think the Church issues a stance on other canons. Why would She need to? The Church lists the books that are in the Bible, plain and simple. How would you prioritize canons that deviate from the actual canon? It either conforms to the canon or it doesn’t.

I suppose if you really had to do it, you would prioritize based on which canons deviated the least from the Catholic canon (i.e. only removing 3 books is better than removing 7).

but isn’t that like disrespecting the other Apostles? NO OFF.

the Spirit is in there Church too. I think it’s a natural to innocent curiosity to see what He has been doing in there Church as well as your own…I mean if you knew God was at a place wouldn’t you wonder what He was doing there and why?

the Holy Father says Apostolic Churches are ‘defective’ but ‘true Churches’
the Catholic stance is that the Holy Spirit is in many different Churches, which I also believe. and some Catholic Churches use the extra books not as canon but reference e.g 1 Enoch = (American) Catholic Church …I get this from the back of my Bible ‘The New American Bible’ NCCB approved, and Jude references him too. Enoch is part of the Ethiopian Canon.

When Monica moved from North Africa to Milan, she found religious practices new to her and also that some of her former customs, such as a Saturday fast, were not common there. She asked St. Ambrose which customs she should follow. His classic reply was: “When I am here, I do not fast on Saturday, but I fast when I am in Rome; do the same and always follow the custom and discipline of the Church as it is observed in the particular locality in which you find yourself.”
