King James Bible

Can anyone give me a short version on how the the King James Bible came to be, and why it is referred to as the KJB?

I did a search on History of King James Bible and retured pages and pages of threads, including ANY post that even mentioned the name KJB.

Essentially, while there had been several prior English translations, when King James 1 came to the throne, the most popular one was the Geneva Bible.

The King did not like the commentary notes in that bible because they implied that it was okay to disobey a bad ruler and they were quite Calvinistic as well.

When King James was petitioned to commission a bible translation, he was only too happy to do so. He assembled a number of scholars and gave then gave them guidelines that included no notes containing commentary.

While Protestant in nature, and frequently incorrect, you might try reading Wikipedia’s entry on King James Authorized. It appears to give some insight in this area. Particularly, it establishes that there were other Bibles in English prior to King James. It’s description of the deuterocanonical books (apochropha) establishes that the early versions included these books.

To my knowledge complete versions of the KJV with the deuterocanonicals are still printed in the UK. In fact was a felony to print it without them.
