I have been reading some books lately that discusses the “Kingdom of God.” Some authors take this phrase to mean a kingdom in heaven-- an outside-this-world type of kingdom. Others conclude that it refers to a kingdom on earth, one which we should strive to achieve. Still others suggest that Jesus meant a Kingdom inside all of us, in the mind and soul. What is the Catholic position on where and what the Kingdom of God is? Thanks!

Dear Karollkid04,

I’m not too sure how theologically sound my knowledge of the Kingdom is (our Year 11 RE teacher when teaching us liberation theology ‘forgot’ to mention it was not church teaching, but this is how it goes;
  • the Kingdom is ‘now’ and ‘not yet,’ now because of the church not yet due to the fact of sin, Christ’s second comming,
  • ‘parousia’ is the fullfillment of the Kingdom (thy kingdom come) through an ‘eschatalogical’ event the Second Comming
  • the term ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ comes from the Gospel of Matthew who wrote for a Jewish audience and thus did not write or say the word God
Hope this is of some help, please point out if I have made any heresies here.

God Bless

Here are a few selections from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) on the Kingdom of God:

The kingdom of heaven was inaugurated on earth by Christ. This kingdom shone out before men in the word, in the works and in the presence of Christ". The Church is the seed and beginning of this kingdom. (CCC, 567)

-Its [The People of God’s] destiny, finally, “is the Kingdom of God which has been begun by God himself on earth and which must be further extended until it has been brought to perfection by him at the end of time.” (CCC, 782)

The Church is ultimately one, holy, catholic, and apostolic in her deepest and ultimate identity, because it is in her that “the Kingdom of heaven,” the “Reign of God,” already exists and will be fulfilled at the end of time. The kingdom has come in the person of Christ and grows mysteriously in the hearts of those incorporated into him, until its full eschatological manifestation. Then all those he has redeemed and made “holy and blameless before him in love,” will be gathered together as the one People of God, the “Bride of the Lamb,” “the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.” (CCC, 865)

At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness. (CCC, 1060)

You ask a very important question.

“To the other towns I must go to teach the good news of God’s kingdom, because that is why I was sent.”

Jesus’s primary mission was to teach about God’s kingdom. Seems like it would be rather important that we understand it.

This is my understanding: The kingdom of God is what we live in when God rules in our lives.

It is a simple idea. Consider the scribe who “realized how skillfully Jesus was answering the questions and so he asked ‘What is the greatest commandment of them all?’” Jesus replied with the commandments to love God and to love one’s neighbor. The scribe showed that he understood and Jesus said “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

A simple idea but not necessarily an easy one.

peace

The Kingdom of God will be made present on earth as in Heaven as the fullfilment of the Our Father. Adam was created in such perfection that God reigned perfectly in him, that is, Adam possessed the Kingdom of God. At the fall of Adam this Kingdom which constituted Paradise on Earth was lost. But since the whole purpose of Creation and Redemption was so that mankind give perfect glory to God, that Kingdom has to be restored. For those wanting to know more about the Kingdom of God on earth as in Heaven, visit the webpage www.divinewill.org It is a very serious private revelation of a spirituality that is coming into the Church via Archbishops, Bishops and Priests, where Jesus teaches His Little Daughter of the Divine Will, to form the Kingdom of God within herself, as the first in a Divine Decree that the creature return to the order, to the place and to the purpose for which it was created by God.

The Catholic Church is the Kingdom of God, begun on earth as germ and firstfruit.

Certainly, the Church being the Body of Christ will be the depository of the Kingdom, which will be manifested on earth as in Heaven as faithful and obedient Catholics coming to know their nothingness make the void for the Lord to deposit His Divine Will on those who ask Him the Gift of the Divine Will, that is, the Gift of God Himself reigning in them in a manner that He will become actor and spectator of their acts. The Kingdom will be established on a one to one in the same way as the Eucarist: The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity is present in one Host, and is present in ten thousand Hosts that may be consecrated at the altar. That is, not ten thousand of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity but the same as is present in the one consecrated Host. In my humble opinion, not too many are interested in voiding themselves of their human will to do the Will of the Father as Jesus did. But the Fiat of Sanctification will be fulfilled because it is a Divine Decree that His Will be done on earth as in Heaven.

The Kingdom of God on earth is the Catholic Church.

With that in mind, consider the words: “Seek ye first, the Kingdom of God, and its righteousness”.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
