Feast of Sts Kirill and Mefodij is a major day for Rossia and Ukraina which use Slavic language and Church Slavonic in Orthodox church. This day we also dedicate to thanksgiving for written Slavic languages. This was a great a tremendous gift of these two Greek brothers to Slavic peoples and to Orthodox church. These translated Holy Scripturs into Slavonic language and also liturgy. However, they were opposed often violent by Trilinguist german monks who believed that only can pray to God in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Therefore brothers went to Rome, arguing on way in Venetsia with trilinguist Western monks. They met in Rome Bishop Adrian II who took under his protection the Slavonic language and liturgy. Such Adrian II also approved slavonic translation of Holy Scripture and in slavonic language liturgy. This was in 869 year.

However in 885 year new Bishop of Rome Stefan V was an ardent oppositionalist to Slavonic liturgy. He began a persecution of disciples of Mefodij which is told in life of St Kliment Okhridskij and Naum Okhridskij. He forbade the slavonic liturgy in Moravia and Pannonia. He arranged to arrest and imprison Gorasd, Kliment, Naum, Angellarios and Lavrentios, the disciples of Mefodij and to destroy works and translations of Konsstantin and Mefodij. In 890 year Bishop of Rome Stefan VI gave anafem to the slavonic liturgy, completely forbidden its use. This created a great wall between Latin Christianity and itrs trilinguist theory and Orfthodox east. This remains until Latin church later changes its infallible position for the third time to allow Slavonic liturgy. (small joke)

However, even though Papa Stefan had destroyed all their works, we know of them from the disciples when able to escape Latin prisons. They are greatly reverenced in Rossia, Ukraina, Bolgaria, Serbia and to less extent in Czechia and Slovakia.

Current Patriarch of Moskow has also name Kirill - this is his name day. Below he is congratulated on Name Day:

Yes! I hope that this day is met with much joy and festivity for you, Volodymyr, and for all others in the Slavic countries. What a great treasure you have in the Slavonic language.

While I am not a Slav, I chose Sts. Kirill i Mefodij as my confirmation saints because it seemed natural, as a linguist, to allign myself with these two great men of God who did such good work by bringing the word of God to the people in their own language. I think this is a very important principle, and it saddens me deeply to read of any Pope who would be against it.

Anyway, happy feast day!
