Kirk or Picard?

The ‘demotion’ was presented more to mollify certain aliens (Klingons), who with their rigid honor system would see it as punitive and a disgrace–although rather it was more of an acknowledgment by Starfleet (which neatly brings in the compliment of ‘captain’ being the rank at which Kirk has saved the universe countless times) that Kirk exemplified “captain” for the times.
 
Picard was a captain and diplomat and a recovering Lucutis borg.

Kirk was a cowboy and a maverick and really distrusted those Klingons for the death of his son. More depth to the character especially in the later movies.

Long live McCoy and Scotty

I vote for the cowboy.
 
My money’s on Kathryn Janeway. Besides, my mother’s formal first name was Katherine (I’ll concede the difference in spelling), so I have a bit of a bias. In addition, she also had to make a snap decision in making “acting officers” of Maquis members. That decision may have come back to haunt her.

Definitely Picard - intellectual, unflappable and rarely (if ever) let his emotions get the best of him. He was practically an ascetic.

And, he wasn’t a womanizer!
 
Tough choice… Picard or Kirk, Kirk or Picard…hmmmm.

ARCHER! because he does merit consideration. THis guy had to be tough and diplomatic. I just wish we coulda seen more:p

Why not? If she doesn’t merit, then how can Picard?

I chose Kirk. He is the standard by which all the others are judged.
 
I voted for Picard, but I have been re-watching TOS lately and have to admit that I love Kirk too. But who I really love from TOS is Spock, so that contributed to my choice of Picard too: my favourite TOS character and main reason for watching it isn’t Kirk.

And I strongly disagree with your opinions about Janeway! :tsktsk: I loved Voyager as much as the Next Gen. and thought she was a class act.

Tuvok and Worf also rule!

There’s an excellent reason for that – he’s gay. Pr at least Patrick
Stewart is.

That aside, I’ll take Kirk over some Frenchman!
 
Patrick Stewart is NOT gay. I believe you are confusing him with Sir Ian McClellan. Mr. Stewart has been married, and has a son, and has not been claimed to have any ‘male’ partner whatsoever by any reliable source I have seen in the last 30 years.

(And I am NOT just saying this because I actually had dinner with him 30 years ago either. I’m serious–I was over studying theatre in London when he was playing Oberon in the RSC’s Midsummer Nights Dream in July/August 1977. He and Helen Mirren actually went out with 4 of us Yanks for pizza and to discuss Shakespeare and the play. I’ll always love both of them!)

Depending on your intent in posting this, this is either slander or calumny and it shouldn’t be posted here.

Patrick Stewart has played a “gay” man in a film, but he has never identified himself publicly as being “gay”. In fact, he has been married twice (to Sheila Falconer and Wendy Neuss) and has two adult children.

It seems you were trying to be humourous. Nevertheless, slander and calumny are still regarded as sins as far as I know, so even if neither was your intention, I’d still advise you not to make such claims about third parties, even famous ones. (Their public roles do not make their personal lives and problems public property to be dissected on forums like this one). Even if you could somehow substantiate your claim, I don’t see how it’s relevant to anything here.
 
kirk was a better captain, a risk taker, and knew when to fire those phazers. The one thing I never did understand about any of the captains is the need to seen senior staff into potentially hostile exploration missions. Kirk at least sent some ensigns to creamed.

I was not trying to be humorous, nor to slander anyone. When ST: TNG was still on the air I saw Patrick Stewart interviewed on a gay-oriented PBS show called “In the Life” and drew the obvious (if incorrect) conclusion.

I wasn’t upset by it; I only meant to point out that posting such a statement on so public a forum isn’t fair to the man because he’s an intensely private person from all accounts and 1) he has never said so himself that I am aware, and 2) it contradicts what little is known about him and so could actually be slanderous. But I assumed you didn’t mean to do so.
 
Kirk got the best women, even uhura was hot for him. in a bar fight you know kirk would hold his own while picard would probably try to talk his way out.
