Hi all, just wondering if it would be sinful if a were to attend a Kiss concert? I’ve been a fan since I was a kid (I’m 21 now) and this is the only chance I can see them live. Months ago I wouldn’t even question it but recently I’ve been making some lifestyle changes for my faith and am now more alert in what I do. Just wanted to get some opinions from you good folks out there.

Cheers

Sean

I wouldn’t think so, they’re just one of many entertaining attractions designed to separate folks from their money. Keep in mind that entertainers that depend on gate receipts or ratings won’t give you the tough love advice that practicing Catholics need to hear on occasion.

…just say’en any band that’s into demon worship you want to stay away from.

Growing up through my crazy adolesence and into my twenties and thirties I had an interest in Rock and Country music. There was a time in my 30’s I thought I’d never change to Country music. Overall though I grew up with a very wide variety of music genre taste.

Love classical and the old jazz of the 1930’s and 40’s too. Dislike abstract jazz music. These days in my mid 50’s if Im listening to music I like someting more sedate and calming on the nerves. Occasionally I’ll reminisce depending on mood with older 1960’-70’s rock music but less and less.

It goes without saying that music is very mood and emoitional setting. Often my best music is just plain peaceful Silence.

Here’s an interesting topic from a Catholic stance on Rock music. catholicculture.org/commentary/articles.cfm?id=48

Why on earth would you think it would be a sin? “I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day”.

I’d admit in some Rock music there is Satanic lyrics and even hidden subliminal messages in some many would be unaware of. There are numerous studies on this.

The biggest importance about any music is not to make a God out of it, in similar way to some hardcore sports phanatics.

Not something I would advise you to go to honestly.

I think your correct in being concerned and to question such.

A gathering to enjoy secular music is not in itself a sin. The drugs, fornication, and drunkenness that may accompany such a rock concert are. If you have reason to believe that the concert would be an occasion of temptation to any of these, then it should be avoided.

From my perspective as an older adult, the only thing sinful about listening to KISS is to still be doing so when you’re over 50.

Think about the band …the atmosphere …the kind of music …

It it were me – and I had liked Kiss in my younger days (and I did listen to them some) – I would not be going to the concert. And there are many bands from my younger days that I would *not *now go see…

(as we begin to live more our Faith --certain things need to be set aside…that we may have liked when we were younger)

I am wondering what brought up this question? I have only heard something like this from my extreme protestant acquaintances. I see nothing wrong. I went to a Kiss concert when I was younger, close to 40 years ago now. I also saw Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad and a few other bands of the late 60s & early 70s. I don’t believe Headbanger music is inherently evil. You must know what to stay away from to not be tempted. Just don’t always follow the crowd and do what you know to be right while you enjoy the music.

This the same KISS who sang “God gave rock n’ roll to you”? 😉

Go and enjoy your concert - I love KISS and would be there in a flash, if it was my neighbourhood.

It is good and very admirable that you are trying to make lifestyle changes - it is not easy and good luck to you. However - while it is good that you thought it over, as a minority of artists/bands do use innappropriate content for cheap publicity - there is nothing to be concerned about with a simple KISS concert.

I think when rock / metal first appeared on the scene, a lot of people were very concerned about themes / costumes etc used in the genre. But 99.9% of this concern was misplaced.

Look at Alice Cooper, he was into the face paint (like KISS), snakes, fake blood and gore, creepy song themes, you name it. He got a lot of criticism and misplaced concern hurled at him for his musical act. And yet, in his private life, he is a devout Christian who makes breakfast for his family every sunday morning before driving them to Church. (I dont think he is a catholic, but hey, nobody is perfect lol).

Sure, perhaps the private life of some band members (KISS and others) are (or were) quite immoral at times - drugs, sleeping around etc - but then when you go to a concert you go to enjoy the music and hang with friends, not to affirm or otherwise comment on someones private life.

Enjoy the gig!

Btw - I now cannot get “God gave rock n’ roll to you” out of my head! 😃

In considering this group as well as any other rock group or star, when one buys the records and goes to the concert, they are supporting these people. I grew up in the 70’s so I do remember when Kiss first came out. I was never a fan and could not get past the onstage outfits which look very demonic. I have seen many interviews with Gene Simon. While he is an obviously very intelligent man and came from an Orthodox Jewish background, he is very immoral and promotes and brags about how many women he has had sex with. So I guess I would ask can one go to their concerts and buy their records when that will support his immoral lifestyle?

Do you really want to make the link between whether you should attend an artist’s concerts and their personal lifestyle off-stage? That would limit whom one can see quite a bit, don’t you think?

Exactly. If no one is breaking the law, I could care less what ANYONE does in their personal life.

It’s only sinful if you buy the tickets from TicketMaster. 😛

In all seriousness, though, I would have a hard time calling it sinful in some sort of intrinsic way. Whether or not it’s prudent for you to go and whether or not it may be an impediment for your growth in holiness is a question you need to discern for yourself.

Take it to prayer.

Here’s the test I think works: take your 3 favorite Kiss songs. Post the lyrics here in their entirety. If you don’t think you should, then you should probably skip it. Send the ticket money to a charity that feeds the hungry.

Part of what rock stars sing about and promote on stage is what they live off stage as well.
That is one angle of looking at the question.

I would say your conscience is perhaps pointing you in the right way in questioning such. Stay home…

The group in question is not some band that just has generally good secular music and a few not good lyrics perhaps in a song or so…
