Read your catechism (841) and learn the special bond that Catholic Christians have with the Muslim people. Now don’t you think an educated Catholic like JPII knew the eternal importance of that image of him kissing the Koran? Catechism 843: “…Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as ‘a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life’.”
And remember that although JPII lived under the Nazis and Soviets who tried to suppress or alter Catholic worship–he did not give in to their nonsense; in fact, some think that it was the soviets who were responsible for hiring JPII’s assassin (who, as an aside, when visited in prison, told the Pope that he usually never misses…). I think of JPII as a visionary, groomed by God through a childhood of loss and strife and war, to see the world not only as it is, but also how it could be. And he never lost sight of that.
And you mentioned Sr. Faustina: isn’t this what Divine Mercy really means?
