KJV Bible New Testament- What's the difference?

Last night after yet another harrowing discussion on Faith with my husband I had cried all the tears I had and couldn’t fall asleep. I needed some comfort, but didn’t want him to know I was up pacing and wouldn’t be coming to bed yet again. I wanted to read the Bible and remembered that I had a little pocket New Testament that I was given when we were married, perfect size for laying in bed reading unnoticed. I went and got it and noticed it was a King James Version.

I know that the KJV is missing 7 books from the Old Testament but what is the difference in the New Testament? Would it be wrong to use this pocket New Testament? If so, can someone direct me to where I can get a Catholic pocket New Testament? I’m really liking this travel size version.

You’re likely to hear quite a range of opinions on this one. But, as far as the KJV of the New Testament, you hardly are doing anything “wrong” by reading it.

A wise man was once asked, “What do you think is the best version of the bible?” He answered, “The one I’m reading at the moment.”

Interpretation based on church teaching (for us, from the Magisterium) may be different, but in “mainstream” bibles (as opposed to say the version used by the Jehovah’ Witnesses, which really is significantly edited to support their dogma, instead of letting the scriptures stand unaltered and present church beliefs in seperate interpretation) there is little difference.

Sometimes I like the KJV for its beautiful prose, but I also like the NAB because it is the text used in Mass in the U.S. But I also frequently use the DRhiems, NRSV, New Jerusalem, and even the JPS translation of the Torah for study.

Don’t let any protestant tell you its the KJV or nothing, but don’t let Catholics tell you that by reading the KJV you are foresaking the church or the Lord and are committing sin!

Read it, and read it often in peace!
 
Unfortunately, I have never seen a Catholic bible that matches the most compact KJV (I even once used a pocket KJV that rivaled the size of most pocket New Testaments - about 3x5x[sup]3[/sup]/[sub]4[/sub]).

I understand there are only a few (relatively minor) problems with word choice in the KJV NT that should not affect a well-catechized Catholic’s spiritual well-being.

The best alternative I can think of is if you have a smartphone or ipod touch, you could read the New American Bible on the Bishops’ website or the Douay-Rheims Bible in a number of websites (though I’ve only linked 2 of the more significant ones).

Actually, I own a pocket size Catholic RSV printed by Oxford Press and it is bound in leather. I think I paid around $30.00.

There is nothing wrong in reading the KJV NT. I own a KJV & NKJV Study Bible. But always have a Catholic Catechism and a Catholic Bible at hand to cross-check on references/footnotes.
 
I would like to know more about this pocket Oxford Catholic RSV. I have been searching for exactly such an animal (and I know many others have been searching for it as well) but have turned up nothing except something that would only fit in a huge pocket that does not exist. 🙂
 
That’s an excellent Bible. I have it also. As a matter of fact I wrote one of the Amazon Reviews for it.

I’m still looking for a small 3x5 pocket RSVCE New Testament. Until that day I will enjoy my Confraternity pocket New Testament.
 
I have this one and love it a lot. It easily fits in the leg pockets of my cargo pants.

I read the original post again carefully (I gotta read things carefully more often). I see you were looking for a pocket New Testament.

If you are still looking for one even though you already ordered the whole Bible, that Confraternity New Testament I mentioned above is great. It’s about 3 X 5 inches, and while the language is still traditional with thees and thous, most of the English is actually more modern and readable than the King James and Douay-Rheims (which is the basis for the Confraternity translation).

It’s based on the Latin but usually has notes to show where the Latin and Greek differ.
 
Fr Groeschel talked about having a pocket KJV with him in jail. If it’s good enough for Fr Groeschel why not anyone else. I used to have the Confraternity pocket NT. It is excellent because the small print is bold and easy on the eyes. Everytime I get one, someone always takes it.

It includes “Dei Verbum”? Just read it in the description
 
I use the KJV translation off and on in catechism class. There are times that I find its word-choices better for teaching Catholicism than some explicitly Catholic versions (I usually read from the NAB, because the kids hear it in Mass). Plus it’s good for the kids to learn how to listen to, and understand, its stately phrasing.
