Let me start by saying I’m a Bible addict. Yes, both reading, and “collecting” if you will. My normal “daily reading go to Bibles” are the DR and the RSV-CE. I have been in search of, for a very long time, a high quality version of either of those. I own a few, including the latest from St. Benedict Press, which are nice, but no where near as nice as some of the “protestant” Bibles you see on the shelves.

Well, during my normal perusing of the web for Bible info, I happened upon the Cambridge Bible web site. They are releasing a KJV, not NKJV version of the Bible WITH the Apocrypha included, in what I am sure to be an absolutely gorgeous edition. (Cameo Reference version in split calf skin for those familiar with them).

As I have never actually read through the entire KJV, actually, not much of it at all, I’m wondering how it will compare to say the DR, for a Catholic, as maybe even a daily reading Bible. I know, I know, it is what is in between the pages that matters, and I do enjoy my DR and RSV-CE, but I’ve longed for an heirloom quality Bible for quite some time, and other than having an existing one rebound, I don’t think I’ve ever come across something of the quality of Cambridge or RL Allan.

With that said, please don’t think me shallow etc., again, I realize the Word of God is good on sticky notes if necessary, I’m just looking for (name removed by moderator)ut as to what I can expect form the KJV, again, with the Apocrypha, vs say what I am used to.

Thanks.

I was in Walmart last week and my eye caught this big display of Bibles so I stopped to check it out on the off chance they had something worthy of a Catholic’s notice and it turns out they did.

I found this:

However, as I thumbed through it in search of the Deuterocanonical books which I happen to know for a fact were in the original 1611 edition of the KJB I discovered that this bargain priced Bible ($4.97 at Walmart) is, in fact, no bargain at all because…
—it does not contain the deuterocanonical books and has been reduced from its massive 12’ x 16’ pulpit-sized folio to this manageable keepsake. At which point I put it back on the stand and walked off because it is it not what it advertises to be. An authentic reproduction of the original 1611 KJB and therefore, (IMHO) not worth the cost at any price.:dts:

If you’re gonna get one, make it worth your price and get one that has all the books. Amazon has this one which looks reasonable.

It will be very handy for faith sharing with KJ onlyist types when they see that the original had all the books.

I too read scripture everyday and collect different Bibles. To be honest at the moment I am reading from my NKJV Study Bible and some of the footnotes are very good. In many instances many of the comments are similar to Catholic teaching. Case in point, in one section of the NT it states how St.Paul baptised entire households and gives the Biblical references. Wow! I was shocked because we know how so many non-Catholics forbid infant baptisms and of young children.

I believe Oxford Press also released a KJV with the Apocrypha back in the late 70’ or early 80’s and is considered an ecumenical translation.

That is exactly what I’m looking to order from Cambridge. (A 1611 version with all books). According to their web site, it should be released, for the first time in a very long time, around mid June. See link cambridgebibles.com/ME2/Audiences/dirmod.asp?sid=0477683E4046471488BD7BAC8DCFB004&nm=&type=PubCom&mod=PubComProductCatalog&mid=BF1316AF9E334B7BA1C33CB61CF48A4E&tier=3&id=7A38E48179644AFF986C1F9B7620AB40

Like I said in my first post, I have been looking for something of this quality, reference edition as well, in a “Catholic” Bible for a very long time. The fact that this includes the Apocrypha, notes, extras etc., is making it very tempting for me. I’ve seen some of the Cambridge reference Bibles, and they are truly worth the money, IMO.

As I also said, I had thought about getting an existing DR rebound and such, but most of what is on the market today, I am simply not happy with as far as type set, what is included, layout etc. The Cameo from Cambridge looks too nice to pass up, and from what I have been reading, as the extra books are included, the KJV is going to be very, very similar to a DR, and probably better than any other translation outside of the DR itself.

Thanks again for the (name removed by moderator)ut on the thread all. 🙂
