I hope the reason your fiancee knows you kneel to pray at bedtime is because you told her.

Another very informative page, this one on Catholic postures and when to use…

Posture and Gesture
This site is great! Our Bishop came to celebrate the Mass at our Church yesterday and I knew I was supposed to kiss his ring or something in addition to calling him… uh… Eminence? Holiness? I forget but anyway the practice seems antiquated and a bit demeaning, however, I love the tradition of it and had I remembered the proper form I gladly would have followed through.

I was waiting for this response. :o

I know. I know. It’s not “ideal” but as long as there’s no hanky panky everything’s cool with God right? I’m not saying there hasn’t been but there hasn’t been since my last confession which… wait why am I telling you this?

No, everything is NOT cool with God. If you are living together, even if there is no “hanky panky” you are playing with fire. This is what is called “an occasion of sin.” Deliberately putting yourself in an occasion of sin is, in itself, a sin. God does not want you playing with fire.

Foolintherain - you would be better off out in the rain than in the same house, if not in the same bed, with your fiancee! What you are right now is fooloutoftherain!!

These are tough times for young engaged couples. Good for you in attempting chastity during this period of your life. I pray that God will reward your effort. (I know he will.)

Keep it up. If it is possible, help yourself out by finding an appropriate living arrangement until the big day. Wait. Why am I passing out unsolicited advice? Because I see you are striving to enrich your relationship with God and with your fiancee. May you be graced to do it fully.

my prayer positions:
supine, hands palm up next to head - before sleep
prone and cruciform - rare, when urge is felt
prostrate, forehead on floor, hands palm down next to head (like muslums do)- when i feel very guilty for somthing, or sometimes at adoration if i am alone, so i wont make a scene.
sitting, folded hands - before meals, or when i am in car plane, seat etc
kneeling folded hands - mass, adoration, when uge is felt

prayer positions i dont use:
Orans, and holding hands.

I usually kneel when I pray before bed, because it helps me to focus and concentrate. I used to just pray as I lay in bed, but my mind would wander easily and I would often forget that I was praying before I actually fell asleep. Kneeling isn’t the most comfortable position, so it helps me focus and stay on task.

Peace

Jesus knelt in prayer, but He also knelt to wash his disciples’ feet. He also honored women who knelt to wash His feet. I get from this that we should treat each other like we would treat God.

I think we can kneel to each other as well as God. In today’s culture that seems awkward, but sometimes I do it symbolically in my mind, such as if I get on the floor to look for something I dropped I think of kneeling like Jesus to wash the feet of others around me. That seems humbling, but now that I’ve told about it, it is probably self-aggrandizing. 😦

When alone with some of my friends and they make a particularly good point or perform an impressive act, I have even gotten down to bow and said, “I’m not worthy” in a quasi-cartoon gesture. While on the surface it appears to be a joke, I honestly think of such a gesture as recognizing the divine nature in other humans. I tend to mix-and-match reality with symbolism.

I kneel every chance I get. (Head bowed and hands together) But my knees are not what they used to be. When I can no longer kneel with my knees, I will kneel with my mind.

Ugh, I know what you mean. It doesn’t help that in the Chapel where we have daily Mass, the kneelers are horrendous. This can get painful for me, especially when I stay after Mass for group Rosary (I kneel), not to mention on Tuesdays we have Eucharist adoration (I also kneel). By the time my hour is up, I can barely walk out of the chapel. However, I just look at it as a form of mortification, and offer it up to God.

Good news is, the effects only seem to linger for the first few yards walking. After that, everything is back to normal.

Here is what we do in the Byzantine Catholic Church,
We kneel only during the Great Fast (i.e. Lent). We are encouraged to stand the rest of the time as a sign of reverance and glory to God. (Standing is a sign of the Resurrection).
Kneeling is a sign of repentance and forgiveness. INO that’s the way is should be.

We are called as Catholics to ‘pray always’, so does that mean we are on our knees 24/7? Of course not! Pray is spoken and non-spoken, by our works, thoughts, and Everything that we do.

go with God!
Edwin
What does “INO” stand for, please?

i use to kneel in church but now been a mother of a three year old is hard so i just sit an pray to god, i know he understand. in the house most of the time me an my son we pray sitting down after i read to my son before going to bed.i know that god listen an he understand everybody situation. i think that most important is to pray. :blessyou:

In the mornings when I see a cloud or a bird, I am reminded to say Goodmorning & Thank You . I will be standing and say a Glory be to the Father…

At night I will kneel and say a longer prayer. ( It is writen that every knee shall bend).

Today I said a prayer while sitting. I have also prayed in the boat, the car and on a plane.

I figure that if Jesus Christ gave Himself up to torture and an ignominious death…then I can kneel.

I kneel at Mass, frequently in direct view of my rheumatologist who has forbade me to kneel. I am only 47 and it seems so silly to not kneel mostly because of bursitis. I do have some arthritis that is progressing more rapidly than I would like. It makes it painful for sustained kneeling during Eucharistic Adoration. We aren’t required to kneel there either, but there are four kneelers in the chapel and I try to kneel and pray at the start and end of my adoration – not including the genuflecting.

I do feel like I am being unfaithful during Mass if I don’t kneel. I don’t have white hair – what I have of it I color. :o Still, I am just so self-conscious if I don’t kneel. I know God is aware of the way he made my body, but that doesn’t mean that I wear my mostly minor pain and sometimes not so minor pain as a badge. I know my cross isn’t that severe. Although, the other day, even the person in front of me turned when my knee made that lovely crackling sound when I move from the kneeler to a standing position. :bigyikes:

So, I kneel as much as I can and often as I can. Except, there is coming a time when I won’t be kneeling and I will be much younger than is usual for the non-kneeling. I guess it is a matter of humility to accept my limitations, but I will have to toughen my skin some so the “parish police” don’t cause me to sin.😛

I only kneel at church…otherwise I see it as a punishment, it was a punisment for many years…and its far too distracting becasue I learned to immagine my way out of my current situation like a storybook character…

…I suppose it would be a great submitting of my will to kneel outside of church, but for now it creates a destructive prayer situation, insted of a constructive one…

Outside of Mass I sometimes kneel to pray – either on the floor or on the seat of my armchair, facing the back. Usually this is when I’m reading or saying prayers aloud.

I occasionally pray silently in bed, walking, at my desk before class, or when I’m standing outside having a cigarette. (No more, though: I gave up smoking for Lent!) I say occasionally – I don’t pray nearly as much as I ought.

But back to the kneeling: it sometimes seems I kneel more in the world than I do at Mass! My parish discourages kneeling; 2/3 of the pews (as well as the cry room) don’t have kneelers at all. (I might kneel anyway – some do – but the kneelerless pews are set close together and, frankly, I can’t fit.) It’s all very discouraging.

I like to pray while I kneel but many times I may be driving or working out or folding laundry. I like to pray through out the day what ever I’m doing.

God Bless,
Donna

**When praying the Divine Office I always kneel. ****For me, it is a very humbling position, and the bit of discomfort I feel actually helps me concentrate. It helps me reflect on Our Lords Passion I often say the daily rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy as I walk. **For me, sitting while I pray is a last choice … Just to comfortable I guess. I try to spend most my day “In conversation with God”, but when it comes to more formal prayer, I try to humble myself, both mentally and physically, before Our Lord.

In His Peace.

I pray both kneeling and sitting. One cannot always kneel for one reason or another. I do prefer kneeling however
