I was wondering whether you are still supposed to kneel during the creed when we say “by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the virgin Mary and became man.” I know that it was done before the changes in the mass, but should it still be done?

It is normally a full bow from the waist, but at Christmas we genuflect instead of bowing.

Yours in the Spirit

It is suppose to be a bow at the waist. Unfortunately, very few people know that. 😦 On Christmas and the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25th) we are to genuflect at the point. Unfortunately, very few people know that either. 😦

Not only the above, but we are also supposed to make a head bow whenever we speak or hear the name of “Jesus”. . .and very, very, very few people seem to know of this. . .

During a televised Mass on EWTN, on the Feast day of the Holy Name of Jesus, the priest who gave the homily addressed this. He instructed that his order was not only to bow their heads at the mention of His Name but that they are to say it with a little more emphasis. If you notice during a Mass on EWTN, the priests have a different intonation in their voice at the mention of His Name. He instructed the congregation to bow their heads at the Name of Jesus all the time.

It is my understanding that there is also a practice of bowing in a Mass when the name of Mary is mentioned, and when the Three Persons of the Trinity are mentioned together (Father, son, Holy Spirit), and when the Saint for whom the Mass honors.

In the Byzantine Rite, one makes a profound bow (bow at the waist) and does the sign of the Cross when the Three persons of the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This was very hard to get used to in the beginning. But as time went on we started to doing it naturally.

The genuflection is in the Tridentine Mass. Also, during the Last Gospel.

In the Novus Ordo genuflecting during the Creed is to be done on Christmas and some other days.

Wow!!!..I have learned much more on this thread than I expected. I did not know about the head bow at the mention of the name of Jesus. Thankyou all for you responses.

Saint Bernadine of Siena was much involved in promoting devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

I’ve always bowed during this part in the creed, too. I didn’t know about some of these other times to bow, such as in hearing Jesus’ name. Though I was baptized long before Vatican II I was catechetized (sp?) after…:o

The current GIRM indicates that we BOW at the words indicated. We kneel or more specifically genuflect at those words at all Christmas Masses and on the feast of the Annunciation.

I am very surprised at this as well…
