Can anyone tell me the specifics of kneeling during Mass (in the U.S.)? Is it required? When do we stop kneeling after Communion (I’ve heard that we should do so when the Tabernacle is closed, but at my church people remain kneeling until the priest sits down). Would anyone be willing to clarify all of this for me? Thank you very much 🙂

Yes kneeling is required (if you are physically able) at different points of the Mass after the Holy, Holy, Holy…

Many now remain standing after the Our Father until after Communion. Upon returning to your seat after receiving you may sit, stand or kneel. It’s up to you. I usually remain kneeling until the tabernacle is closed. But you could sit at any point.

In my experience you stop kneeling and sit down as the priest sits down after communion. That’s what we do.

But what about pregnant women? I’m expecting a baby in June, and looking forward to the later months when I get bigger. Are pregnant women supposed to kneel? I always have, but sometimes it’s difficult!

In our diocese, we were instructed to remain standing after the “Agnus Dei”, during the reception of the Eucharist by the whole congregation — and then to sit or kneel after the last person has received the Body and Blood of Christ. As a result, we have people sitting then, or after the tabernacle is closed, or else after the priest sits down. It’s a free-for-all with no consistency whatsoever.
