Within Lutheranism, there used to be a lot more. I was taught, “stand to praise, kneel to pray, sit to listen.”
I know that Anglicans kneel a lot, or that some still do, and others don’t.

I don’t kneel as much as I used to because of replaced knees, but I still kneel to receive the sacrament. It is, after all, Christ’s body and blood.

I was raised Protestant in the southern part of the U. S. I do not recall attending any church service where kneeling took place. I’d guess it is not common. That’s just my experience.

What about Charismatic Protestants, do they kneel or prostrate or things like that? Going by the definition, I think they dance and clap their hands. …

I attended numerous Pentecostal and Fundamentalists services. Again, if someone kneeled it was not formally done. They just did it on their own if they felt compelled to do so, as I recall.

Kneeling during mass was actually one of the factors that drew me to the Catholic Church.

No, there is kneeling there, too. When I went to that kind of church, we would sometimes kneel on the floor facing our pew, or when people went up to the altar call, most would kneel.

I recently attended a funeral in a Protestant church and there were no kneelers. I was curious about this question myself and that was the first thing I looked for when I entered the pew.

Convert1 and Bonnie. Thanks for the information. 👍

Brad90956. Stereotype Catholic? Did you also look for the holy water by the side of the door? … Just kidding you. 😉

Thanks, Bonnie! Your experience was obviously different.
I just never saw any structured part of a service that required kneeling such as Mass does.

I wouldn’t say it was structured - it was just something people did either before or after the service. Every once in a while the preacher would say we should all kneel and pray - usually intercessory prayer for a situation. That could go on for a LONG time. 😃

The prayers before the service are something I miss as a Catholic. Very few Catholics pray before Mass - most chat.

Oh my gosh, I DO remember that now! I know there weren’t too many, but I remember one time an intercessory prayer seemed like it took hours. Wow. I just now thought of that when you posted!

My husband and I tend to sit apart from folks at Mass because it IS so important that we pray before Mass. You’re right. Sad that it seems to be dwindling. 🤷

We kneel. Anglican worship is very similar to Catholic worship.

As far as the non-liturgical Protestants go, it varies. Some do, most don’t. With some Protestant churches, it’s up to the individual to do as they feel led. At the last Evangelical church I attended, the pastor lamented the lack of kneelers and sloping concrete floors that made kneeling impractical. I think almost everyone sees the value of getting on your knees to pray. It’s almost as ingrained in our souls as the desire to know our Creator.

I used to attend an evangelical church. Kneeling was not part of the service, but many did kneel to receive communion. I’ve also been to high church Anglican services before. These tend to use either the Book of Common Prayer or an adapted version of the Roman Rite. Kneeling is more common, but is not done as universally as at Mass - some will kneel and some won’t. I’ve also been to an Anglo-Catholic “Mass”. They kneel the same as Catholics.

In my old Protestant church there used to be kneeling but it has fallen out of favor. The old hymnal called for kneeling at certain points in the liturgy. During my life the ministers still knelt but the congregation typically did not. There was one church that actually had kneelers and there the congregation did still kneel.

Based on my admittedly limited experience I think this might vary by region and even parish. At my parish chatting is rare. It might help that the church has a more traditional architecture. But I’ve certainly been in some parishes where praying was difficult due to all the talking. A big problem is the talkers make it hard for those who do want to pray.

Yes, we kneel during the prayers and during the Eucharist in my Anglican parish, thank goodness.

In most evangelical churches whether you stay seated, stand or kneel during prayer time is determined by the direction of the worship leader who is not following any particular protocol. Bodily position is not determined by particular prayers or traditional expectation. Kneeling is not as common as standing or sitting with heads bowed but has been experienced as special in certain situations.

Growing up Methodist our church had a communion rail and you would receive communion kneeling and pray there after communion and when we had vesper services. We also had kneelers in the prayer chapel.
